EUROPEAN SURVEY ON THE PERCEPTION OF INTERNET THREATS – FAST FACTS – Denmark A survey was conducted in September 2007 and 2008 across internet users in 7 countries. The survey was designed to understand the impact of internet spams, such as lottery scams and identity theft, on people’s behaviours. The following data highlights key findings related to lottery scams in terms of people impacted, attitudes and behaviours to this type of spam, with a focus on Denmark. The average number of spams received in a week in Denmark is 18. For the countries represented, internet users in Spain receive the least (13) and in Germany the most (22) The average number of lottery scam emails received in a week in Denmark is 3 70% of internet users in Denmark claimed to receive email from unknown senders. This is among the highest – Italy has the lowest figure at 62% and Spain the highest at 77% In Denmark, 53% of those who received spam emails specifically received “lottery scam” emails (multi-answer) Although the majority of people who receive lottery scams believe them to be scams, the remaining 18% think that some could be genuine. In Denmark, 32% of those who receive lottery scams believe them to be genuine. 1% of the internet users surveyed in Denmark have been a victim of an internet scam where they lost money, which along with France is one of the lowest results for the countries researched, and compares to a high of 4% (Germany, Netherlands) Based on the percentage of internet users in Denmark and the current population figures, it is estimated that over 30,000 people in Denmark may have been victims of an internet scam thats around 1% of the internet users for Denmark

27% of the 4930 internet users interviewed believe they are likely to be the victim of an internet scam that would cost them money. 19% of the Danish internet users interviewed believe they are likely to be the victim of an internet scam that would cost them money this is the lowest for the countries surveyed, with the highest being France at 39%.

Not only does receiving emails such as lottery scams and gambling invitations make people more reluctant to use the internet (36%), it also makes them more reluctant to buy things over the internet (51%) Receiving internet spams makes internet users in Denmark more reluctant to use the internet (10%) and more reluctant to buy things over the internet (32%).
