In spite of all of the disturbing news about our economy, we are pleased that our offices have had a busy spring making travel dreams come true. And, we want to thank you who have recommended All Occasion Travel to others. Without your good words, we could not be as successful. Word of mouth is by far the best advertisement and we sincerely appreciate it. Since our spring newsletter, we have made some changes in our agency; adding a new office, a new consultant and enhanced concierge features that enable us to act as your personal travel concierge, with door-to-door service, day tours, excursions, fine dining, theater tickets, car rental, drivers/guides and more. And, we are opening an office in Napa. Although it will be a full service office, it will specialize in wine country activities. Our new consultant's name is Marge Layne and some of you are privileged to already know her. And, finally, , we are embarking on an other form of advertising and adding a bit of fun by sponsoring a bocce ball team in Rio Vista: The All Occasion Travel "Aces". Sorry the picture doesn't do them justice.Joan, Jana and Marge recently returned from their annual travel agents' convention where they completed their continuing education for the year. This is necessary to retain our affiliation with American's Travel Cos. Now, please allow us a minute to brag. While there, Jana was honored by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines as the ATC agent booking the most cruises for the year 2012 and Joan was presented a plaque by ATC for her "outstanding sales" for the same period.

In late March, our loyal All Occasion Travel Cruise Group, cruised the Caribbean, Since the cruise departed from New Orleans, we added a few days in New Orleans prior to boarding that added a special flavor to this trip and I would highly recommend it.The articles in this issue are varied. First, to answer your questions about the safest places for women to travel see page 2.since single travel is gaining popularity, we have a couple of items on page 2; one the best destinations for female travelers and the other a brief note on single supplements, Some of Joan's best values for the year re on Page 3, and Jana;s pick for 2014 is on Page 4. And, " A Little of This and a Lot of That" starts on Page 5, Let's get started...

Best Destinations for Female Travelers

If you travel often, you understand that the world is mostly safe and that people are mostly good. If you don't, well, it's easy to hear sensational stories about rape and murder abroad and convince yourself it's safer to stay home in bed. Women are particularly prone to this, mainly because we have added concerns about our health and safety abroad. While it's true that bad things happen even in the safest corners of the globe, by and large these countries top our list for female-friendly hotspots.

2. New Zealand: In addition to being one of the most visually stunning destinations on the planet, New Zealand is also one of the safest. The land of the long white cloud is full of friendly people, in a paradise where sheep outnumber the locals and hitchhiking is a widely used method of getting from one place to the other. Check Out: Wellington (north island) if you like cities, and Mt. Cook (south island) for jaw-dropping natural scenery.

3. Thailand: Thailand is one of my favorite places on the planet, not only because of it's beauty and culture, but because women here are running the show. Many hostels, bars, restaurants and tour companies are owned and operated by women, which is refreshing to see. The government also does its part -- in Chiang Mai, for example, the Thai government operates a rehabilitation program for female inmates that teaches them skills in massage so that they will be able to find work upon release. If you're heading to Thailand, be sure to check out our guidebook on the country! Check Out: Northern Thailand, including the city of Chiang Mai and Pai, a small hippie mountain town.

3. South Korea: The education system offered in South Korea is impressive, with a 2010 UNESCO study showing a literacy rate of more than 98 percent for women over the age of 15. That, combined with the fact that it's a relatively safe and easy place to travel, makes South Korea high on our list. And it's not just us -- thousands of expat women call South Korea their home, working as English teachers who help to mentor tomorrow's generation of women. Check Out: Seoul, for one of the world's most interesting cities, and Jeju Province for gorgeous beaches. If you're looking for ancient culture, don't miss Gyeongju.

4. Iceland: Iceland ranked No. 1 in a recent survey by Newsweek and The Daily Beast, which examined the laws, health rates, education level, employment and amount of women in politics in 165 countries. The natural scenery is stunning, and there are only 300,000 residents in the small country. Check Out: South Iceland, for the otherworldly glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls.

5. Canada: Canada is consistently ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world for women to live. It's beautiful, has a low crime rate, and offers free health care, which is especially important for women. Check Out: Vancouver, a fun city with friendly people. The islands off of Vancouver are also gorgeous, and make for a fun weekend getaway on the ferry.

Single Travel

2

Many single people don't travel simply because of the single supplements most travel companies charge. So, we asked hundreds of travel suppliers if, they have accommodations for singles. And, if not, do they have a no charge or low charge policy for a single supplement. Happily, we found some affordable cruise and land travel for singles. Of course, since there is the problem of availability, your travel plans must be arranged well in advance to secure them.

TourTourists Rescued From Iceberg Picnic...A group of U.S. tourists found themselves floating away on on ice last week after stopping for a relaxing picnic on a glacier. The Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon in East Iceland is a popular spot for travellers, so the group decided it would be fun to set up some chairs and enjoy their lunch in this unusual location. But a section of ice they were sitting on broke off and started drifting away, putting them in potential danger. One of the party managed to jump of the ice and call for help. When rescuers finally arrived, the floating picnic party was 10 meters off shore sitting calmly on their chairs waiting to be saved.

Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines also offer free air miles to doctors. They agree to help out if there is a medical emergency onboard. Although airline cabin crew do receive medical training, many prefer a GP or nurse to be present to administer drugs or conduct tests. assengers Urged To Avoid Travel To The Bahamas!...A newspaper in the Bahamas has warned cruise ship passengers of the crime epidemic throughout the Bahamas. Because of increasing crime levels in Nassau, passengers are being warned  to stay on the cruise ships when the ships call on Nassau. There have been rapes of young women who go into the bars near the port, petty theft, snatch and grab robberies and violent crime. Just this past weekend U.K. Daily Mail reports that American Kyle Bruner was murdered in Nassau over the weekend while attempting to help another American tourist who was being mugged. The U.S. Department of State calls the crime level on New Providence Island, where Nassau is located, as "critical." Snatch-and-grab' crimes are common occurrences. The State Department says it has received reports of assaults, including sexual assaults, in casinos, outside hotels, and on cruise ships.

Boarding Pass ID Shows If You Can Zip Through Airport Security...Eligible Delta Air Lines, United Continental, and US Airways travelers who have been approved for TSA PreCheck expedited security will begin to see a unique identifier on their boarding passes this week. The goal of the new identifier is to help qualified travelers route themselves to the dedicated PreCheck lanes at the nation's 40 participating airports. Delta and US Airways passengers will see "TSA Precheck" on their paper boarding passes and the TSA PreCheck logo on mobile boarding passes. United fliers will see the PreCheck logo on both paper and mobile boarding passes. Some types of boarding passes, such as those stored in Apple's Passbook feature, may not support the notification feature at this time. The identifier will still print on boarding passes even if the airport a traveler is departing from doesn't have dedicated PreCheck lanes. To help avoid confusion in this case, the TSA has advised checking the list of participating airports, which is updated frequently.

Holland America's Nieuw Amsterdam Rescues Two Sailors...A week ago the Nieuw Amsterdam received a call from the U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center at Norfolk, Va., regarding a mayday signal it had received from sailing yacht Embla, which was disabled and adrift. The ship diverted from its course and arrived on the scene at 9 p.m. local time. The ship then took the two men off their sailboat. The men were taken aboard Nieuw Amsterdam following a security check and provided food and accommodations. They will disembark in the next port of call at the Azores. When the call

Van Gogh Museum Reopens In Amsterdam...The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has reopened after a seven-month renovation. The museum kicked off with a new exhibition "Van Gogh At Work," an exhibition that shows the tortured artist's working methods right down to his paints, brushes and other tools. There is a self portrait in which the artist painted himself behind a canvas, brushes and palette in hand. On loan from the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, are an actual palette and paints that Van Gogh used. They were preserved by Dr. Paul-Ferdinand Gachet, the physician who treated the artist in the final months before his 1890 suicide. 145 paintings and sketches are on display, almost double the museum's usual collection. A highlight is the display of two versions of Van Gogh's famed yellow "Sunflowers," hung on either side of a green-dominated portrait he painted known as "La Berceuse." A surviving letter, written  by Van Gogh, he indicated that he intended the paintings, which usually hang in three different museums, to be displayed that way. The museum displays a replica of part of the letter, which shows sketches of the three paintings in miniature. With the reopening of the museum, all three of the city's biggest art museums are open for the first time in years. The Rijksmuseum, or national museum, which houses national treasures and many of the greatest masterpieces of painters such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer and Jan Steen, opened in April after an epic 10-year, top-to-bottom overhaul. The Van Gogh Museum receives a million visitors a year and is known for long lines, but it has now started a new Internet reservation system that aims to smooth the flow of traffic over the day.
