COMEDY CENTRAL LIVE Feat: Charlie Baker & Ria LinaA one-man entertainment machine, Charlie is an in-demand comedian and compere, an actor and a highly acclaimed jazz singer. His inextinguishable on-stage charm makes him an outstanding MC. If Jack Black, Jethro and Frank Sinatra had a son, it would be Charlie.

Next up is Winner of the EMMA Award for Best Comedienne 2003 — Ria Lina, who makes an impact with her dry wit and bawdy ukulele songs.

It’s semester 2 already, and we’ve got a pretty amazing line-up for you over three great venues this spring.

Don’t miss early comedy events such as Russell Kane on Saturday 29 January or our weekly Tuesday night comedy at The Pleasance Cabaret Bar.

If you’re looking for a night out with a difference, why not try Alan Bates – Comedy Hypnotist on Thursday 3 February, or be a bit daring and try Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art class on Thursday 24 February... budding artists have the chance to draw portraits of the burlesque dancers on stage.

As usual The Venue at Potterrow has got a tip-top mix of club nights and big names, this season we’re really excited to see Roll Deep on Sunday 13 February as well as the return of Beat a Maxx, following his appearance at the Teviot House of Horrors Hallowe’en Party.

And of course no student calendar would be complete without the much loved Saturday night Potterrow fixture Big Cheese.

Don’t forget about Teviot – there’s plenty going on here as well, we really know how to throw a fantastic ceilidh and what better excuse than Burns Night on Tues 25 January?

LITERATURE Literature Society Poetry Slam The Literature Society poetry slam provides a great opportunity for a taste of the poetry on offer in Edinburgh. Full of sparkling wit and dazzling rhymes, this event showcases the talents of both students and veterans of performance poetry. If previous events are anything to go by, it promises to be irreverent, beautiful, and very funny.

ADVENTUREDoug Scott – Big WallsBefore Doug Scott came to international prominence as Britain’s leading high-altitude mountaineer, he was at the forefront in the development of big wall climbing.

In this special evening he’ll tell of his own adventures – and the friends he’s shared them with – including the ascent with Chris Bonington of The Ogre. The abseil accident and subsequent tale of survival and escape from this ferociously steep Karakorum granite peak tends to overshadow that the climbing done by Doug and the first ascent was outstanding, described by the Huber brothers as the most difficult technical climbing ever done at altitude.

Dr Sketchy’s Anti-art School Dr Sketchy’s was born in a little cafe in New York in 2005, by illustrator, performer, author and general bon vivant Molly Crabapple. Three years later and it’s a world wide phenomenon. Its aim is to put the fun back into life-drawing with a wink and smile and a well placed nipple tassle. Tonight, a collection of burlesque models will take to the stage in a fabulous costume and strikes various poses for the audience to sketch. All levels of skills are welcome; the serious students can concentrate on producing a masterpiece, whilst the rest of us plunge through a few surreal exercises, enjoying the drinks, dames, dudes and doodling.

Comedian, actor and writer Barry Castagnola has firmly established himself as an accomplished comic performer. He has been performing stand-up in the UK and internationally for over 6 years. His easy-going (yet very physical) style, mixing personal anecdotes with some sharp topical and political comment, enthuses audiences at most of the major comedy clubs in the UK.

THEATRESelladoor Theatre Company Presents Spring Awakening Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. It explores the confusion and desperation that ensue when the onrushing tide of hormones meets the ignorance of children raised by parents too embarrassed or prudish to discuss what those new urges signify. Two of the three lead characters are sacrificed on the altar of propriety: one tormented by shame over sexual fantasies and bad grades, the other, a girlfriend, the victim of a botched abortion...

Cloud Men are extremely rare creatures who live a quiet life high up in the sky. SCHOOL OF ROCKImmensely enjoyable and extremely fun, this comedy of Jack Black posing as a substitute teacher in order to create a rock band out of a prodigal class of fifth graders hits all the right chords. And a great soundtrack to boot.

THE USUAL SUSPECTSRoger ‘Verbal’ Kint (Kevin Spacey) tells his interrogator (Chazz Palminteri) how himself and a group of four other criminals became involved in a catastrophic heist, that ended up with all but two being massacred.

And just who is the mysterious Keyser Söze?

QUADROPHENIABased on the album of the same name by The Who, Quadrophenia follows Jimmy (Phil Daniels), a teenage London Mod, as he battles against Rockers, his parents, his friends and himself. One of the great British cult films about teenage life, which deserves more recognition than it receives.

TOY STORY 3Pixar does it again! Another touching installment in the ToyStory series. Buzz and Woody are back and must now deal with being left behind by a college-bound Andy and an ensemble of new toys. Laughs and tears await!

The Film Society are back with another eclectic mix of films across all genres – there’s something for everyone! Membership costs just £15 a year or £10 a semester for students/concessions, and £30 a year for non-students, or you can buy a daily membership for £2.50.
