Evacuation Order Lifted In North Columbus After HazmatSituation

COLUMBUS, Ohio -

People in North Columbus were able to return to their homes around 9:30 p.m. Saturday after beingforced out earlier in the evening by a Hazmat situation.

At one point, Columbus firefighters evacuated a half-mile radius around the AkzoNobel plant onWindsor Avenue.

Columbus fire crews said they were called to the paint and coating company after multiple unknownchemicals were mixed together, prompting the possibility of an explosion.

Kimberly King said police knocked on her door and told her to leave.

"They said the factory across the street mightexplode," King said.

King and her family were just one of the many forcedfrom their homes after a Hazmat situation at theAkzoNobel plant.

Duain Murphy said, he, too, was told to leave.

"I'm thinking, where to go and am I going to be all right and what's going on?" questioned Murphy.

Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Tracy Smith said, chemists were called to the plant, after multipleunknown chemicals were mixed together.

"We found out they were mixing multiple solvents in a resin process, they heated up to a very hightemperature," Chief Smith said.

Chief Smith said there was a possibility of an explosion. As a precaution, everyone in the immediatesurrounding area of the Windsor Avenue plant was evacuated.

COTA buses were brought in for those with nowhere to go.

Columbus firefighters gave the all-clear around 9:30 p.m. and residents were allowed back in theirhomes.
