A3. Read about The Problem with the Weather and solve the exercises
below.
December 2013 was an incredibly hot month in Argentina and produced some
of the country’s highest temperatures on record. Temperatures climbed to
45°C in the north of the country and in Santiago del Estero, at least seven
people died.
Australia also experienced a heatwave. On 16th January 2014 Adelaide
became the hottest city in the world with temperatures of 44°C and the
country’s animals suffered in the extreme heat.
In the US, things were very different. In early January 2014, freezing cold
weather travelled south from the Arctic, bringing snow, wind, and freezing
temperatures. In large parts of the country, temperatures fell below freezing
and Minnesota recorded a low of -36°C.
At the same time across the Atlantic, the UK was affected by violent storms.
In the country’s wettest December and January on record, winds of 100 miles
per hour hit some areas and water destroyed homes, buildings, and transport
systems.
Why are these extreme weather events happening? And if they are bad
now, can they get worse? The experts have very different opinions!
Climatologist Wendy Oliver believes global warming is responsible and says,
‘Heatwaves and other extreme weather patterns may become more common in
the future.’ So, do we have to slow down global warming to stop these weather
events? Scientist Taylor Hughes thinks not. ‘Global warming doesn’t cause
extreme weather,’ he says. ‘The weather always surprises us. That’s what
makes it so interesting!’ (adapted from Champions 2, Student’s Book, p. 63)
a. COMPLETE the chart:
Temperatures Consequences
December 2013, Argentina 45 ° C 7 people died
January 2014, Australia 44 ° C The country’s animals
suffered.
January 2014, United States -36 ° C Snow / wind / freezing
temperatures
