EVALUATION QUESTION 3 – WHAT

HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?By Harry Sheen

TARGET AUDIENCE

We first determined our target audience with secondary research by looking

at similar films in the same genre as our own, I did some research on Pearl

and Dean which showed me that the film 'Yes Man' was a 12A this signified

that the main target audience for the film was young teens-adults making the

comedy of the film easy to understand by a large range of ages.

Secondly I looked at the film called 'Fred' this film is a comedy based around

a younger boy who is trying to get the girl of his dreams, this is a similar

storyline to our own and has the same age category characters as our own

teaser trailer, this made it a great teaser to research and generate ideas from.

Fred is targeted at the younger generation to those in college; this is similar to

our own teaser as we hope to aim our teaser at young adults with college

styled humour.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Another part of research is primary research this involves gathering the

information yourself using surveys, questionnaires and other sources that

allow you to collect your own new information. The primary research that we

did to find out our target audience was putting our first draft on Facebook for

our friends who are classed as the target audience according to the

secondary research; this gave us an idea of exactly what the people who

would be watching the teaser would want to see.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The target audience is important in media because they are what all media is

based around, the audience create the criteria for how the films should be

made so the most profit can be made when it is released, for example with all

the different types of genre if the target audience wasn't established

beforehand then the less popular genres wouldn't be to get the audience they

need to make the film successful. Without there being a target audience

advertising wouldn't be as effective because they wouldn't be able to use the

guidelines set out to attract the correct people that are interested in that type

of film.

FIRST STAGE OF TEASER FEEDBACK

Feedback played a big part in perfecting our advertisement package, we first

received feedback when we had a first draft of our teaser trailer, we uploaded

it to YouTube and showed it to the targeted audience around college, we

waited a couple of days and let the comments build up before taking into

consideration what people had said, we had a rating system 1 star to 5 stars

for each part of the teaser, firstly there was mise on scene which was given 4

out of five stars by everyone that reviewed it, the comments to go with their

decision was good use of costumes and props to represent character and

setting and to making the teaser understandable and realistic.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

We received good feedback for our mise on scene, however room for

improvement came from editing, getting 2 out of 5 stars from some people

meant they felt there was room for improvement, the comments were some

shots were too long and dragging the scenes out and they needed cutting

down to make the teaser seem more like a teaser. As a result of this we

shortened clips and added more of a montage effect to the clips to make

them seem much more like a teaser trailer. The editing came into play as we

also created new titles in livetype that were shorter in length so they would fit

with the new montage edit.

SECOND STAGE OF TEASER FEEDBACK

The second part of audience feedback came when we showed our clip to the

rest of the class; this allowed us to get an idea of what others in our project

thought we could improve but also those in our target audience to say what

they enjoyed. I will start firstly with what people thought was good, we got

positive feedback on the changes from the first draft this was good as it

meant people had recognised we used there feedback to make our teaser

trailer better. This changes involved making our teaser quicker with shorter

clips so it seemed more like a professional teaser trailer.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

What went well was great, however some constructive criticism was changing

the colour of our titles which we agreed with, the comments were mainly

about the colour and font. "The font has too much going on, make it simpler

so people can understand it better", "The colours are mixing too much, and

they need to just stand out to the audience." With these comments in mind we

amended our work to make the titles more appealing for our target audience

by making the writing red on a light blue background, but also making the font

nice and simple.

FIRST STAGE OF POSTER FEEDBACK

We also had to gather feedback on our other advertisement texts, for our

poster we did a questionnaire this included three simple questions, what do

you like about the poster? What don't you like and why? And finally what

would you improve? these simple questions allowed us to get clear feedback

on our poster so we could improve it, firstly people said that we had used a lot

of the conventions have the billing block in the right place and the title in the

centre and at the top of the page which is where it is meant to be located.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

However people said that the colours weren’t very comical and could give off

the wrong impression to the target audience, they also said that the

background was to bare and could use some additional material. From this

we decided to completely change the colour from a dark blue to a mixture of

yellow and light blue these vibrant colours gave a better feel to the poster and

we all agreed it related better to our genre.
