New and Special Features in the ESC Congress 2011 Scientific Programme
Congress Spotlight: “Controversial issues in Cardiology”
This spotlight theme has been chosen to clarify conflicting views across several aspects of cardiovascular medicine. There are, inevitably, different opinions on certain topics, and these occur anywhere from basic
science and research to the most complex interventional procedures. The ESC Congress is the platform for constructive debate on the issues based on evidence and experience.
Topics by Village
For the delegates‟ convenience most scientific sessions were arranged by topic in themed villages
(Zones A-F).
Cardiologists of Tomorrow Track The Cardiologists of Tomorrow programme is a partnership between the ESC and its National Cardiac Societies and Affiliated Cardiac Societies. It consists of a dynamic specific educational track throughout the Congress that provides young cardiologists with some of the most relevant and up to date information on key areas in Cardiovascular Medicine.
A one day track in Room Zagreb was also dedicated to CoT sessions organised by the young for the young.
Clinical case sessions
Clinical cases (presenters were all under 35) selected by the nucleus members of the ESC Cardiologists of Tomorrow were presented during interactive sessions chaired by a senior cardiologist and a younger colleague.
Bilingual Track for General Practice Physicians and Nurses
All day Saturday in room Athens. These sessions were dedicated to common problems in cardiovascular diseases open to all but specifically aimed at primary care practitioners, general physicians and nurses. It covered the most relevant issues these professionals have to face on a daily basis. This programme was organised in conjunction with the ESC Council for Cardiology Practice, the ESC Council on Cardiovascular Primary Care and the ESC Council
on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions. There was a special one day registration fee for General Practice Physicians (€135) and Nurses (€50) attending just this programme.
More Joint sessions with Global perspective Including the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, the Saudi Heart Association, the Chinese Society of Cardiology and Cardiological Society of India.
Gender Track A series of abstract sessions on Sunday 28 August and Monday 29 August in room Riga (Zone B). Gender medicine has become one of the most interesting and attractive topics in cardiovascular medicine. The differences in morbidity and mortality among the genders even in conditions with similar risk factors attracted a lot of attention about the pathophysiological differences.
Furthermore, special related issues like pregnancy with congenital heart disease, pregnancy related diseases like preeclampsia, hypertension and peripartal cardiomyopathy are among the most intensively discussed issues. Therefore the Congress Programme Committee, for the first time at an ESC Congress, put together a special track on gender related aspects of cardiovascular disease for the congress in Paris.
Scientists, clinicians and epidemiologists are invited to enrichen this field with their contributions.

Delegate Profiles
The “Raise Your My ESC Profile” initiative, launched in April 2010, requesting My ESC Users,
and congress delegates onsite, to update their personal and contact data and profile
information, greatly improved the quantity and quality of profile data for congress attendees last
year (from levels below 30% previously to 70%). Raise Your My ESC Profile is now a continuous process throughout the year, helping to
maintain the higher levels of profile data in our database. For the ESC Congress this year, a softer approach was adopted than last year, with no prize draw and significantly less logistics and resources onsite. Emphasis was placed more on publicity pointing out the importance of verifying personal data to ensure receipt of the journal, etc., and using the traditional
subscription and membership zones at the congress for delegates to check/update their data.
Profile information this year is based on around 67% of active delegates.
Attendee Profiles: 2011 v 2010 v 2009 v 2008
The profile information contained here is taken from information supplied voluntarily online or, during ESC Congress 2011, through the My ESC Browser application.
Overall the summary profiles are similar, but there are some variations which are highlighted in the individual sections.
Following the “Raise Your “My ESC” Profile” this year, the % of delegates providing profile information in MyESC is very much higher than the two previous years. Overall the profiles are similar to the two previous years, but there are some variations which are highlighted in the individual sections.
Place of Work
Whereas previously the place of work information was only provided by the cardiologist profession, it is now available to be completed by all. The “Research” and “Other” options have only been available since March 2008, and were disproportionately low in 2008 and 2009, but in 2010 (with the initiative to review/update the profile)
the proportions are more representative and they now form a much more significant proportion of attendees – with the proportion “In University Hospital” decreasing significantly. One or more categories can be chosen.

Fields of Interest and Area of Expertise
Individuals can choose as many Fields of Interest as they wish from a list of 30 categories (which mostly reflect the ESC core syllabus categories). Following feedback from last year‟s congress regarding the lack of a
category for Interventional Cardiology, this new category was added in October 2010. The average number of categories chosen per attendee for both years is close to 6.5. The information was provided by 67% of attendees.

Continuing Medical Education Interests
CME Interests were added to “My ESC” Profile in March 2008. During the first two years only a low percentage of attendees had provided such information. Although this is not a mandatory field, in 2011 around
51% of those attendees provided data. On average, around two (2.2) interests have been chosen out of the three.

Exhibition
At the ESC Congress 2011 in Paris, the exhibit area occupied a total of 12 163.94 m² and was concentrated in
Hall 6 (Zone C).
Summary of Hall Usage
Zone C (Hall 6) was made up of two distinct exhibition areas namely: 1. The Commercial Exhibition 2. The ESC Zone (Formerly known as the ESC Membership Zone)
The Commercial Exhibition took up the central portion of the hall and the ESC Zone occupied the bottom left side of the hall. Some interesting facts about the two exhibition areas:
It was the first time at an ESC Congress that both exhibition areas could be seen from the main entrance of the building.
Stands over 350 m² were allowed to hang part of their stand structure.
More than 200 stands (including Pharmaceutical industries and Device companies) The ESC Stand was in close proximity to the Registration Area
French Gardens
With the “Jardins de Versailles” being so far away we decided to create an ideal relaxing spot for our busy delegates! Both gardens were 300 m² and were directly opposite the entrance leading to Zone A and B. There was a fountain in one garden that was a major attraction and ample seating was provided around the gardens. ESC Zone:
The National Societies were placed in the ESC Zone in between the Commercial Exhibition and the Lecture rooms in Hall 5. The exhibition schedule was changed this year and was more in accordance with the opening hours of the scientific session as delegates had to pass through the ESC Zone to access the lecture rooms in Hall 5.

This year, the ESC Zone welcomed the following exhibitors: 12 Affiliates Societies of the ESC ESC Stand 46 National Societies

Virtual Exhibition Map: A virtual plan was offered on www.escardio.org allowing easier navigation and accessibility to company information for delegates.
Onsite Interactive Map: for the first time we replaced the huge exhibition plan we used to place at the
entrance of the exhibition hall by 10 terminals containing the Interactive Map and these were in turn scattered around Hall 6 so that delegates could view the exhibition hall plan from each side of the hall.

PUBLIC EVENT Atout Cœur à tout Age
A public awareness initiative took place during the ESC Congress, for the first time since 2006.
Held on Sunday 28 and Monday 29 August, from 10:00 to 20:00 in the centre of Paris on the square in front of the City Hall, this event was the opportunity for French speaking visitors to get information on the „age‟ of their heart, how to
keep it happy and the different associations partners. There were 4 different poles: Well being, Physical activities, Nutrition, Health and a big institution tent.
Visitors could get information on stress management, relaxation, sleep patterns and disorders, get tips on how to incorporate physical activities in their daily lives, discover new sports (Zumba fitness, Swedish Gym, baby gym) as well as attend cooking workshops.
The last pole was the most sought after with first aid demonstrations from the Red Cross, cholesterol and lipids tests (700 were done over the 2 days), information on smoking cessation and the analysis of the visitors‟ test results by
cardiologists.
In the big tent, visitors got to meet the professional associations working for their well being and partners of this operation: the European Society of Cardiology, the French Society of Cardiology and the French Federation
of Cardiology, as well as a stand for VIPARIS. Over 3 000 visitors came to visit over the two days.
European Heart Health Charter for Paris: a city oriented chart was signed by the Ville de Paris and the ESC at the end of the ESC Congress.
For the event, a poster was printed; a flyer was distributed at
the Health Stops of “Paris Plage” which took place from 10 to 21 August 2011. Online presence: - A web page in French on the ESC web site to present the event and goals. - A Facebook event page through the ESC profile. This
event page was updated regularly and linked to many websites: Paris Tourism office, Paris City, the SFC, the FFC etc...
