5 Steps to Surviving an Economic Crisisby Pastor Christopher Brooks

As the economy is rocked by an unfortunate mixture of poor corporate management, falling home prices, job losses and politi-

cal gamesmanship many people are wondering what they can do to protect themselves from financial devastation. As both a Pastor and Finan-cial Advisor, I have watched with a prayerful eye as our government attempts to create a bailout plan which will hopefully rescue Wall Street firms and main street families. If you find that your anxi-eties have risen concerning your financial future, you are not alone. This is a very serious moment that has caused many to be uneasy and one which requires prudence and wisdom.

Thankfully, as Christians we are blessed to have God’s word as our timeless guide to financial peace and security. Even in situations as challeng-ing as the one we currently face, God has provid-ed an abundance of both biblical and practical instruction on how to survive. I would encourage you to spend time reading passages such as; Genesis 41 and Luke 16:1-8 for biblical models on how to respond to seasons of economic difficulty. However, on a purely practical note I believe there are 5 basic steps each of us should take in order to ensure our financial survival during this recession. If followed, these steps should position you to thrive no matter the financial climate.

Step #1: Do not Panic - It goes without saying that we all make drastically better decisions when calm and collected than we do when frantic and fearful. Successful individuals are able to overcome adversity, in large part, because they exhibit emotional control during difficult times. Decisions made in panic can cause long-term financial problems. Such as, those who feel that they should pull their money out of the bank or stop paying their bills, or those who feel so over-whelmed that they question “Why should I even try?”. These acts and attitudes will only work to

worsen your situation. Now is the time to step back, take a deep breath, and to remind yourself that the fundamental foundation for financial success has not changed.

Step #2: Do not make Financial Decisions on Your Own - We all know the proverbial wisdom “there is safety in a multitude of counselors”. Well now is the time to apply this truth to your financial decisions. Take advantage of the professionals and expertise available to you. You should set up appointments with a representative from your bank and any other financial firm with which you do business. Ask them to explain how the current economic meltdown will affect you and to advise you on how to protect your current assets. Share with your advisors the way you are feeling and the actions you believe should be taken to secure your money. Most importantly, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you make decisions on how to best handle the resources he

has entrusted to your care.

Step #3: Cut Expenses and Increase Income - Chances are that your company is not in a position to give you a raise. Therefore, the best way to in-crease your income is to slash your expenses. Each monthly bill you are able to eliminate acts as money going back into your pocket which you could use to accomplish other financial goals. The margin for fluff is gone, so, be wise enough to get rid of any expenditure that you can do without. The second best way to increase your income is to turn your hobbies into profit. Now is a great time to take that special skill you have and use it to bring in addition-al income. If you are able to do things like baking, cleaning homes, event planning and handyman work; seize the moment and get the word out that you are available for hire!

For many couples the top four areas of disagreement or conflict are communication, finances, children and intimacy. During these economic hard times, it is imperative that we focus on the family from a Biblical perspective so that our families can survive the shifting economy. When money is tight, couples do not have a plan for how to navigate their limited resources it leads to increased problems in commu-nication such as frustration, accusations, arguments and sometimes even worse. For each individual it can lead to outbursts of anger, increased worry, anxiety over paying bills and making ends meet. As you have to cut back, deal with bill collectors call-ing and/or if you can’t see a way out it could lead to depression. The children will often become pawns and parents may even feel guilty that they are not able to give their children as much as they would like or keep up with what others in the neighborhood. And for couples who have a hard time navigating their finances; a healthy intimacy life is usually out of the question. Working extra hours and/or two jobs to make ends meet may lead to exhaustion and limited time for intimacy due to scheduling. In times like these, the four most common areas of strain in a relationship can become compounded.

This may sound all too familiar. It may represent your household or someone you know and care about. There is hope! God is able. Discipline is possible. You can survive the economy. Families of faith do not have to become part of the nega-tive national statistics because God is the major denominator in all of our equations. When we focus on our families in accordance to the Word, God will add wisdom. He will multiply our limited resources. He will subtract unwise decisions that lead to debt and He will not let the enemy divide us. What can couples do to focus on the family especially during economic hard times? These navigation tips will help get you through as you pray, study the Word and trust the Lord.

COMMUNICATION (Ephesians 4:29 – Let no unwhole-some/corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth; but that which is good to the use of edifying that it may minister grace unto the hearer) Set a time weekly to sit down at a table to discuss finances with the family. Each person can give an account of income and expenses so that there are no surprises. This weekly time can also be used to thank God for His provisions and to pray for those who are less fortunate. During this time be mindful that coming to the table should not be seen as punishment or a time for just bad news but an opportunity to be informed as part of the household.

CLARIFICATION (Proverbs 3:13-17 – (13) Happy is the man that findeth wisdom and the man that getteth understanding). So often, in families lack of informa-

Explaining what is going on with the finances and how things are being handled will help those in the family better appreciate why certain decisions are made. It is important to explain why purchases may need to be postponed, plans altered or can-celled or why there are so many changes in how the monies are distributed. Family members experi-ence more peace when there is understanding and trust in the process of decision making.

CONSOLIDATION (Acts 2:44-45 – And all that believed were together, and had all things in common; and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.) Consolidating your finances means a lot more than just getting control of your money. It means getting a handle

on your habits and renewing your mind concern-ing spending and sharing. Coming together as a family and consolidating will ensure that the needs of all are met. This may be a good time to sell items that are not frequently used or give them away to others that will be blessed and have greater use for the item. Discuss with family members the need to pay off small bills, cut expenses and join together in like purchases. Many things can be purchased at a discount in bulk if they are needs of others in the family. Sharing items among family members will also promote additional closeness and opportunities to work things out as we work together.

The 5 Rules of Employability during an Economic Crisis

by Pastor Aaron O. Richardson

During these economic times, the American worker must develop a sound strategy for finding and maintaining employment. In

this commentary, you’ll find that the rules of en-gagement for employability are designed to aid those searching for employment and also those wanting to keep their current employment stand-ing. There are multiple challenges to securing good employment in this hour; however, all is not lost. The good news is there are jobs available; acquiring work and maintaining work is also a job in itself.

Rule # 1. Be very careful of whose advice you fol-low. One must become a researcher to no end. There are literally, thousands of resources avail-able, with an opinion on how to get and keep a job. The question to ask is how one should go

about choosing and following information that is reliable. Look beyond just the normal inter-net articles on how to’s and try asking actual people who are in the industry of interest. On the other hand, consider asking your supervisor what is the best way to maintain your current position, based on the present conditions of the company. Also, be prepared to hear the reality of the situation and be willing to make provi-sions in your employment strategy.

Rule # 2. Become an employment strategist. Criti-cally assess your current status as a worker, or a desiring worker, and take ownership of your em-ployee profile. Learn the current key performance areas for your employer, because they may have changed due to the economic down turn. What was a priority yesterday, may not be a main concern today. Simply aim to keep the most important thing the most important thing. Do your own performance evaluations regularly, and be proactive about making adjustments where necessary. This will aid you in realizing your value as a worker. Also, discuss with others around you about how they see you as an employee and ask them to be honest. The sudden loss of a job, or inability to obtain a job, should not be a sur-prise. The competition levels are extreme and no one is indispensable.

Rule # 3. Build a winning resume. Because of the job crunch, there are many highly qualified appli-cants applying even for entry-level positions. This means that the selection pool is swarming with fresh candidates for employers to choose from. The advantage goes to the individual who is best able to present their capabilities and previous per-formance. Unlike in times past, a hiring manager should be able to immediately glean significant information about an applicant to consider them as a potential hire. This being said, you want to prepare your resume with ease of reading in mind while communicating all of your accomplish-ments. Next, avoid sending your resume blindly. All candidates look alike that follow the routine of sending a faxed or e-mailed resume. Speak

Swith the employer first; finding out exactly what the hiring needs are for the current season, allows you to craft your resume to the specific needs of the com-pany.

Rule # 4. Be ex-tremely relational. Try contacting the direct hiring author-ity instead of hu-man resources. HR rarely makes the fi-

nal hiring decision unless the job opening is in that department. Start by calling the company and asking for a manager’s name and e-mail address or checking the company’s web-site for the needed information. Another step is to forward a persuasive e-mail to the hiring manager about why they should meet face to face with you. Be sure to communicate your flexibility to meet when and where it is convenient for them. Being readily available, informed, and eager to work, separates you from other potential candidates.

Rule # 5. Begin where you can. This may sound like an unconventional piece of advice. How-ever, with the time it takes to successfully land a perfect position, it may well serve the individual to be optimistic while working in an unfavorable position for a season. Also, there are a number of assistance programs for the displaced worker through state funded organizations such as Michigan Works and Detroit’s Workplace Devel-opment. Continuing to improve job skills and marketability is a must. These opportunities can provide a wellspring of training and education for the individual who is willing to take advantage of these aides. Make sure you are not turning down any opportunity that can best advance you toward your employability goals. Remember, there is nothing new under the sun; what is, was and what was will always be.

Hope for HomeownersThe single greatest financial concern through-

out the country has been the impact of the “housing crisis.” Because household budgets

have been totally upset due to interest rates on adjustable rate mortgages skyrocketing, credit be-ing frozen due to all of the bad debt being held by lending institutions, and unemployment rising, foreclosures have reached a 30 year high. This has caused home values to plummet and even the col-lapse of several major financial institutions. In an effort to ease the fears of so many and provide wisdom during this difficult financial season, listed below are 4 practical tips that may prove helpful if you are facing an escalating adjustable rate mort-gage, foreclosure or simply trying to sell your home. Remember as you read these tips that the basics are still the basics.

Tip #1 Consider Your Lender an Ally

The single greatest error that homeowners make regarding their mortgage lender is not communi-cating as soon as they run into financial challenges. Lenders are in the lending business and it is in their best interest to work out payment arrangements with you. If you are facing financial challenges that will affect your ability to continue paying your mort-gage on time, you should immediately contact your lender. You may be able to refinance into a fixed rate (1), you may be able to have missed payments added to the end of your loan to bring you current (2), a payment modification may be granted (3) and under certain circumstances, a combination of the last two may be an option (4). There are even government certified agencies that can help you. Don’t wait until it is too late. For a list of agencies that can support you, go to www.hud.gov.

Tip #2 Consider Hiring a Professional

Whether you are facing financial challenges or

simply looking to sell your home, I would strongly encourage hiring a professional and highly experi-enced realtor to help you. Times have changed and the days of the most recent housing boom have long gone. This means that you can no longer place a for sale sign in your yard or list your home at any price and expect buyers to come knocking down your door. It is a really bad idea to “test” the market with an uninformed market price. Your home has the greatest potential to attract buyers within the first few weeks. If that opportunity is missed due to over-pricing, you may have missed your opportunity to sell your home. A professional realtor is going to be familiar with the local market conditions and should be able to help you price and market your home appropriately based upon research of comparable home sales in the area. Even though I do strongly encourage hiring a realtor, I would not be solely dependant upon their efforts to sell your home. Negotiate an arrangement that would allow you to pay a lower commission percentage if you are responsible for the sale of your home and do your best to supplement their efforts.

Tip #3 Consider a Buyer’s Perspective

We are in a buyer’s market meaning that there is a much greater supply of homes than there is de-mand for them. This also means that buyers can take their time while shopping for the right house, in the right neighborhood and for the right price. To greater your chances of selling your home you have to be sensitive to what buyers are looking for. Beyond the price of the home you need to consider the con-dition of your prop-erty. Homebuyers are looking for homes that have a great appeal,

outside and in. This means that your grass and bushes needs to be tapered, your doors, roof, gut-ters, garage and windows need to be attractive, and everything else should pleasing to a potential homebuyer at first glance from the outside. Also, the inside of your home should not be in disrepair, cluttered or inappropriately decorated. A profes-sional realtor can walk you through this process.

Tip #4 Consider Alternative Options

Although this is the final tip, this should not be con-sidered the least of them. As a matter of fact, one of the first things that you should do is to examine multiple financial options with wise counsel. Your goal should be to examine your personal network so that you can find experts who can provide ob-jective advice. Some alternative things to consider may be leasing your home with the option to buy (1), selling it on terms with a Land Contact (2), or maybe renting a room or space to a family mem-ber or friend while trying to regain stability (3). If this is not possible and you still would like to sell it, consider negotiating with the bank to accept a short sell (3). Another option to consider is doing a deed-in-lieu of foreclosure (3). As a last resort, filing for bankruptcy may be the least desirable but most suitable option for you (4). I do how-ever, want to stress that this should be a last resort, yet it should be considered early on in be-cause of the time and funds that it would require to imple-ment.

Step #4: Secure Your Employment Future - The greatest financial asset any person can possess is a good job. This is why so many have become nervous as unemployment rises across our state. It is critical that we recognize that, although the job market has tightened, there are plenty of good jobs available for qualified candidates. However, as we look to the future we must realize that due to the competitive nature of our econ-omy we all must work hard to make ourselves at-tractive to employers. This means that you should obtain any special training or certifications pos-sible, be willing to be cross-trained and even consider going back to school in order to obtain a higher level of education than you currently possess. All of these moves only work to make you more appealing to potential employers. For those who are already employed it is essential that you increase your diligence at work. Do all that you can to maximize your productivity, main-tain peak performance and above all exude a positive and cooperative attitude at all times. If your performance is high and your attitude is great then you will most likely be retained by your employer even if they have to let others go.

Step #5: Get a Financial Education -Your finances may be the third most important area of your life, trailing behind only your faith and family. Your money represents the resources God has provid-ed you with to accomplish his will for your life. You and I are accountable to the Lord to do all that we can to make sure we are educated financially so that we can make good and godly financial decisions. Take the time to read financial newspa-pers, attend financial seminars, listen to sermons on managing your money and talk to folks that have a proven track record of financial wisdom. This will allow you to have both the competence and confidence needed to not only survive an economic crisis but to thrive in the midst of it.

things you can do together as a family. Cutting off the cable may be a scary thought but it can lead to more time to do home-work for children, times to talk in the evenings, to play games and do ac-tivities as a family. Spend-ing time together as a family is a past time that needs to increase. Family devotions and times of prayer will lead to an attitude of gratitude and shift our focus from what the world says to what God says.

Navigation TIP #5

COUNSELING (Galatians 6:2, 10

– Bear ye one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ; As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith) If demonstrat-ing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) or maintaining Christlikeness among the members of your family has been challenging, then coun-seling may be in order. Be willing to let others help you as you grow. Counseling is simply allow-ing someone to walk along side you for a sea-son of life to help you deal with the issues of life (whether it is communication, finances, children or intimacy). Church leaders and members of the Healing Place ministry are available to help you focus on the family as you navigate these economic hard times.
