hank you for worshiping with us this morning. We extend a
special welcome to our guests and ask that you complete a blue
or yellow visitor’s card and place it in the offering plate.
or Children: We have trained nursery staff (paid nursery attendant as well as adult volunteers)
for children ages 0-3. During our building renovation and construction project, the nursery
is located across the street at Trinity Chapel, 10 West Church Street. Enter by front center door of
the Chapel or the via the left side walkway entrance of the Chapel. Children age 4 through 2nd
grades are welcome to participate in Children’s Church which follows a special Children’s
Thought for the Day. Children’s Church is also located in Trinity Chapel during construction.
The teachers escort the children to the Chapel after the Thought for the Day and parents will pick
their children up in the Chapel after the 10:30 service has ended. Children are also welcome to
remain in the sanctuary with their parents. Children’s programs, books, crayons and colored
pencils are available in the rear of the sanctuary near the welcome table.
n the pew racks are folders with information about the various aspects of the service. If you
are visiting, please feel free to reach out to someone sitting near you and ask them questions
about the service. Many of our visitors ask us about the time of offering. This is a time in our
service when we respond to God’s gifts of love by offering the gifts of our lives. For many of us,
this is when we make a financial gift towards the ministries and programs of our church. We also
use this time to ask God how we might use the gifts of our hands and hearts in sharing God’s
love. If you are visiting, there is no obligation to give a financial gift. We are just glad you are
worshiping with us.
ll are invited to join us for refreshments and conversation following the service. Weather
permitting we will be meeting on the sidewalk outside the main sanctuary building or in the
basement of the church.
e ask that you please silence your cell phones during our worship service. We also ask that
you refrain from applause after our choirs sing or the bell choirs play and allow the music
to resonate in the quiet of the sanctuary and in your hearts. Our musicians are playing and singing
for the glory of God. They know you appreciate their efforts and their gift.
Rest rooms (equipped with changing stations) are located on the first floor of the church building.

EVANGELICAL REFORMED CHURCH
United Church of Christ
- An Open and Affirming Congregation -
June 3, 2018 Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time 10:30 a.m.
*All who are able may stand.
Chimes Concert at 10:00 a.m. from Trinity Chapel’s steeple
Greetings and Announcements
Honoring of our Graduates and Teachers
Passing of the Peace I invite you to pass the hope of Christ with your neighbors, for each time we connect with one another, love
grows.
(We are grateful for your presence as we gather to give praise to God. The prelude music is a time for us to
focus on our worship of God. Please use this time to settle your heart and mind as we come together in
community to pray, sing, and hear the words of scripture encourage, inspire, and challenge us for the living
of these days.)
Prelude Siciliano (from Sonata in Eb Major for Flute and Harpsichord, BWV 1031)
- J. S. Bach
*Call to Worship
As we gather today
We listen for the voice of God
in our innermost being.
We listen for the voice of God
in the words we read, the songs we sing, the prayers we pray.
We listen for the voice of God
in words of hope and kindness.
We listen for the voice of God in the difficult words that need to be said.
As we gather, may we listen and may we hear.
Opening Prayer (in unison)
We begin our time together in a moment of quiet. (pause)
We listen to the sounds around us.
We listen to the thoughts of our hearts. (pause)
God who speaks and who hears, we remember again that it is you
we worship, and you are here with us. Amen.
*Opening Hymn God, Speak to Me, That I May Speak - No. 531
*Call to Confession
*Prayer of Confession
Our lives are full of noise; yet we fail to listen, fail to hear.
Sometimes we use the noise as an excuse. We say we are too busy to
listen to God, too busy to listen to each other, too busy even to listen
to ourselves. Sometimes we hear, but we choose to ignore.
*Assurance of Pardon
God does speak. Like Samuel, we may not understand immediately;
sometimes we need time and help to hear. But God still speaks,
encouraging and restoring, challenging and confronting. As we listen
and respond, we partner with God for good.
Thought for the Day
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

ORDER FOR HOLY COMMUNION Invitation
Beloved in Christ, the Gospel tells us that on the first day of the week
Jesus Christ was raised from death
and encountered two disciples on the road.
They recognized him at table, in the breaking of the bread.
This is the joyful feast of the people of God.
All God’s beloved, diverse and beautiful,
come from east and west, north and south,
and gather about Christ’s table.
May God be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to our God.
Let us give thanks to our good God.
It is right to give God thanks and praise!
O Holy One,
You are our lover, our longing,
our flowing stream of gladness throughout creation,
leading us in your dance of love.
We thank you and praise you
for giving us life, and
immersing us in the life story of this people who are
blessed by your faithfulness,
challenged by your prophets,
forgiven by your mercy,
and ever surprised by your power to do more,
working in us, than we can ask or imagine.
We thank you for Jesus, your Word of life,
--Bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh--
Whose life, death and resurrection fully reveal
your desire for reconciliation, wholeness
in a just world for all.
Jesus showed this love
When he gathered at table with his friends
in a time of struggle and fear,
and took bread, blessed and broke it and gave it to them saying
“Take and eat: for this is my body.”
And after supper,
as Jesus looked forward to your day of joy and power;
he took the cup of wine,
again gave you thanks and praise and said
“Take this, all of you, and drink.
This is the cup of the new covenant: my life poured out for you.
I will share this with you again in the reign of God.
Come now, Holy Spirit of God—
let these gifts of bread and cup
become for us bread of life, cup of blessing.
As we share this meal, transform us,
Make us one body in Christ.
Amen!
Sharing of the Bread and Cup
(All who desire the Sacrament, including children, are invited to come forward at the
direction of the deacons. You may kneel or stand to receive the elements. Consume the
bread and drink from the cup as it is given to you, and hand your empty cup to one of the
ushers, as you return to your seat by way of the side aisles. Please use the quiet time
before and after you commune for private prayers, for your own needs and for the needs
of others.)
*Prayer of Thanksgiving
O Christ, our Host, we thank you for your welcome and your
presence with us today.
We go forth from here gladdened and strengthened to witness to
your love and work for a just world for all.
*Closing Hymn I Come with Joy - No. 349
*Benediction
Sevenfold Amen - No. 814
Postlude Little Prelude and Fugue in Bb Major - J. S. Bach

In Mark 3:20–35, Jesus challenges assumptions of how we are to relate to one another and to
God, teaching that it is God who is ultimately at the head of all of our relationships. The Season
after Pentecost is a time to reflect on God’s transforming presence, and our scriptures testify to
a God who longs to lead us and all of creation into wholeness and peace. Yet it is not always
easy to choose to follow God’s leading. In what areas of your life do you find God leading you,
and when do you resist?
Our pastoral intern, Domenik Ackermann, will be leading us in worship this morning.

ERUCC Summer Musical O Chicken of Little Faith Come join the fun and help us with our production of this fun
show! The story centers around a girl (chicken) named Faith and
her friends who learn lessons about how God can help them face
their fears. If your child/youth would like to find out more about
this adventure, please join us for the ERUCC Summer Musical!
We will learn more about Faith and her friends and how God
helped them tackle all kinds of problems. We will begin
rehearsing on Sunday, June 3 from 9:30-10:15 in the Trinity
Chapel high school classroom. Rehearsals will continue through the summer with the
production in the fall. A complete schedule will be shared with everyone during the first
rehearsal. Participation is open to anyone who is willing to lend a hand and we hope you will
join us! These musicals help raise money for several of the youth programs and mission trips
throughout the upcoming year. We are looking for older youth to help with important pieces of
the production in addition to participating in character/chorus roles this year including assisting
with directing, choreography, lights, sets, sound, and costumes. There are also parts for those
who want to sing in the chorus, parts for those who want to act, parts for those who want to
dance, and parts for those who want to be involved, but not on stage. If you have any questions,
or if you are an adult and are interested in helping with this effort, please contact Tricia Coffey
([email protected] or 301-455-8720). We look forward to having you join us–it’s going to
be great fun!! HOPE TO SEE YOU ON JUNE 3!

June 5 Martin Pistorius: How My Mind Came Back to Life--and No One Knew
At 12 years of age, Martin Pistorius contracted a brain infection and lost the ability to
communicate. His parents were told that, for all intents and purposes, he had become a
"vegetable" and was no longer mentally aware. But in reality, Martin's mind had begun to knit
itself back together. The problem? No one knew it.
This talk will make you cry, but it will also make you smile. Through it all, you'll learn the
value of a simple smile, the remarkable power of the mind, and why it's important to look
beyond the first impression.
Greeting at ERUCC
A smile and a welcome. A warm handshake. An invitation to come in and a word of thanks for
joining us in worship.
The Evangelism Team is looking for people who smile, welcome, and create an atmosphere of
joy and belonging,
As we move into the new space, we will need more greeters. We are adding a new, beautiful
glass entrance between the parish house and the main sanctuary building. More entrances means
more opportunities to greet.
Those first moments when people arrive at ERUCC make a huge difference and you can be a
part of creating that welcoming atmosphere.
