First, congratulations to the class of 2013. I am very proud of each and every one of you and wish you much continued success. Seniors you have played a significant role over the past four years as a Maynard Evans High School student and I thank you for demonstrating pride, integrity, and for being tenacious. FCAT Testing has been the focal point during the month of April and will continue through June, as we continue to administer EOC’s, A.P. exams, and I.B. exams. Our student attendance has been strong, as well as the individual attentiveness demonstrated during testing. I want to thank our teachers, tutors, students, parents, and administrative staff for working diligently with organizing and executing the testing process. Congratulations to Anthony Cooper for receiving the MLK Humanitarian Award, Brandon McClary for receiving the Disney Dreamer and Doer Award, Trovarious Lloyd for receiving the WOCC SOAR Award, Rodnesha Davis for receiving the Dell Scholar Award, Tanisha Marshall and Kalia Kohliem for receiving the Take Stock Award, and Wanda Remy for receiving the Spirit of Excellence Award. Congratulations to Kathleen Caliste and Shamain Thompson for winning the Paul and Sarah Goodman Scholarship and congratulations to all of our Bridges winners. We are proud of their accomplishments. Congratulations to the Girls Track Team for winning districts and competing in state. Congratulations to our Boys Track Team for also competing in state and earning 3rd place in districts. Congratulations to Justin Walker, Boys Weight Lifter, for being a district winner. We are proud of their many accomplishments. Trojans thank you for keeping your education your priority and remaining focused on success, because Evans High School is “A Place of High Achievement”.

Summer School Summer school will run from June 12 through July 17 on a 4-day week with extended hours. Summer school will be closed every Friday except June 14.

Sports Physicals and How to Have a Healthy Summer If you plan to play sports next year, now is a great time to get your physical exam done! Get your sports paperwork from Doc Nelson and a consent form from The Hub. Once it is filled out and signed by a parent/guardian, schedule an appointment with Mrs. Ravndal, nurse practitioner, in room 1-121. Appointments are made for lunch or during elective classes. Plan to have a healthy summer by drinking a LOT of water - skip the soda, juices and sports drinks. Be sure to put healthy meals and snacks in your body and get plenty of rest. NOW is the time to maximize your growth and optimize your health by choosing lean proteins, whole grain breads and pastas, and fruits and vegetables. Keep a regular bedtime during the summer so that your body doesn’t go into shock while adjusting when school resumes in August. Be active! Try a new sport this summer. If you have any questions about staying healthy, see Mrs. Ravndal in 1-121. Finally, BE CAREFUL! Injuries and accidents are the leading cause of death and illness for teenagers. Make good decisions and take care of yourself. If you do not know how to swim, find a place that offers lessons. It is a great way to be active and to cool off. Have fun and make great memories!

IB Ambassadors The IB Ambassadors have worked hard to plan multiple activities for the IB students this year! They coordinated Karaoke Day, Movie Day, cultural performances and food during the Art and Jazz Festival, IB Olympics, Fellowship Day, Feeding Children Everywhere and many IB students will participate in a walkathon in May! The IB Recognition night will be May 23, 2013 from 5:30pm-6:30pm in the PAC. This will be a special time to recognize the success of many of our students! The Value of IB IB Diploma Programme seniors will officially attend class for the last time on Wednesday, May 1, and the casual observer might be tempted to think, “So that’s why they’re in IB—they get out even before the rest of the seniors!” Nothing could be further from the truth: “Examination Season” begins on May 2, and continues even after “Senior Farewell” on the 22nd. Instead of reporting to school each day, seniors will each sit for anywhere from eleven to fourteen separate examinations covering all aspects of the content and analysis of their Diploma Programme coursework. There are no “bubble sheets,” in the accepted sense, although the first exam paper in each science course appears to be a classic multiple choice with 30 or so problems to be solved in the 45 minutes allowed for the exam. Most IB tests are much longer, ranging from a little over an hour to 3 hours for History and Music, and requiring careful analysis and extensive writing. The Diploma Programme seniors will not see their IB Exam results until July 6, and by then, many of them will already be enrolled in college, so the early summer is a suspenseful time for them. Strong results are expected by the Candidates (IB-speak for “seniors!”) and their teachers—and obviously, also, by the colleges and scholarship funds in which they are interested. Our 32 seniors have already posted thousands of dollars in scholarships, grants, and financial aid, and to date there are 62 college acceptance letters posted on our hallway…with more coming in every day. That’s why IB seniors—and juniors—can be found in the classroom at 6:30 every morning and until 5:00 at night. They aren’t looking for an early out—they’re looking for a future!

Foundation Scholarships Congratulations to our IB and Academy of Multimedia and Technology seniors on your achievement! Miranda Bhagroo, Fred Gravil, Ernson Pierre, and Kimesha Bennett were selected as the recipients of the Earth Web Foundation scholarships. These students have been excellent examples of how students should conduct themselves during the most crucial point in their secondary school education. They have proven their ability to think critically, apply themselves, plan for the future, and to rise above their surroundings and take charge of their own learning experiences. However, not only are they good students academically, but they are always willing to help others, get involved with extracurricular activities, and engage in many community service projects that affect the Pine Hills community and communities around the world. They truly have a determination that is rarely seen among young people. They received their scholarships at the 16th Annual Earth Day Dinner Celebration, an event hosted by the Dr. Saavedra’s Foundation.

Our 2012-2013 HighlightsThe Clinic Our clinic has been busy! We’ve had nearly 3,000 student visits to the clinic, and we’ve provided more than 325 free physicals. To encourage our students to remain healthy so they can be ready to learn, we encourage them to drink plenty of water, eat healthy foods and allow for proper rest.After-School Tutoring Our after-school tutoring program has been a big success this year. Students received tutoring in reading, ACT, math and other subjects as needed. Along with academic support, students enjoy teambuilding activities each Thursday to strengthen their character and leadership skills. We’re grateful for City Year, corps members and tutors who help our students reach their maximum potential. We’re also thankful for donors who’ve provided snacks and meals to our students in after-school tutoring. Snax Cabinets Since the launch of the after-school snax program, we’ve distributed more than 11,000 snacks to our students! We have five cabinets around campus so teachers can pick up snacks for their students after school. Our cabinets are stocked, so don’t forget to pick up snacks at the five locations: The HUB-Building 100, Athletics-07-215, Performing Arts- 02-124, ROTC- 07-114, Karlene Scott-05-109.Parent Involvement Our parent involvement numbers have increased every quarter. The Parent Resource Center has offered free workshops on home buying, financial awareness and progress book training. Parents: if you’re looking for assistance with resume writing, G.E. D. /ESOL classes, or need access to United Way 211 and Access Florida, our doors are open for you. We appreciate everyone who has stopped by the Parent Resource Center and all who serve in our school. Volunteers From assisting in the food pantry to managing the Hub daily, our dedicated volunteers are so important to student success! We thank you! Mentoring Our mentorship program has 27 participating students and 20 dedicated mentors. Though we are just beginning this program, many of our students have already achieved portions of their goals in academics, behavior and attendance! Congratulations, students and mentors! Summer Programming We are currently working to connect students to the right summer programming for them. Please visit the HUB to ask about summer programming at Evans and in the community. Classy Ladies The purpose of Classy Ladies is to help and encourage young women of Evans High School by building confident, class, and a healthy self-image. We are dedicated to helping produce future leaders within our community. Join this Club and make a difference in your community.

Beta Club Evans High School’s Beta Club promotes the ideals of character, service, and leadership amongst our members. The organization strives to serve the community through multiple projects such as working with the children at the Coalition for the Homeless, visiting a nursing home, assisting with the Walk for AIDS Awareness and cleaning up our school environment in honor of Earth Day. The sixty two members of this prestigious organization believe in the club’s motto “Let Us Lead by Serving Others.”

As an AVID family we encourage our AVID seniors to apply to as many colleges as possible. As a result the following students have the most acceptances in the AVID program.

The AVID senior class is proud to announce that we have been granted over $1,000,000 in Scholarships. • Anthony Cooper has received

FAMU Environmental Science Institute Scholarship for $12,500/year. He has received $ 363,036.00 in scholarships to date. Anthony will attend FAMU in the fall.

• Rodnesha Davis is the first AVID Senior at Evans High School to be selected as a Dell Scholar. She will receive a $20,000 scholarship to be used for education-related expenses incurred in an accredited college or university four year degree program. Rodnesha will attend Hampton University in the fall.

• Tanisha Marshall has received $80,150 in scholarships thus far and will attend Valencia in the fall.

Bridges To Success A warm and heart-filled thank you goes out to Ms. Graham from Valencia College and Ms. Bohn. Due to their partnership, we have the most students from Evans High School accepted to the Bridges to Success Program. Throughout the year Ms. Graham scheduled several Application Days where students were able to apply to Valencia and receive assistance with their Bridges to Success Applications as well. Thank you to Ms. Bohn for coordinating all of the interviews. Your collaboration efforts certainly paid off!!!

Soar Award Please congratulate Trovarious Lloyd on receiving the SOAR Award. Trovarious has received several awards and was the 2010 AVID Summer Institute Key Note Speaker.

Special Olympics Thanks to the efforts of Ms. Dorestant and the sophomore AVID class, on Saturday, March 16th the AVID students supported our Special Olympics athletes at Freedom High School. Summer Reading Let’s make reading a top priority for our children this summer! Involvement with reading during the summer months will lead to better academic performance when students return to school in August. This summer, all Evans High School students will have a reading assignment given to them by their Language Arts teachers. This assignment will also be posted on the school website. The teachers have selected high interest young adult novels to help cultivate a love of reading in our students. Many students will be able to check the books out prior to the last day of school.
