Returning to routine School life is moving closer to a new normal. The great majority of students have settled into good routines and are very happy to be with their friends, learning again. During the week I met with the School Captains and asked their thoughts on, given we are moving closer to HSC examinations, how well senior students were travelling with their return to school and their preparations for the exams. Their advice included surveying students to capture the answer to this and other related questions. We will go ahead with the survey and it will target how they are feeling about their study program and preparedness for the HSC exams, their ability to continue with school work during the COVID ‘at home learning’ time, what further support the school can offer, and what advice the students would give the school should we have to manage a second wave of the virus. The insights of the students often provide sharp advice to our life at school. Rob Walker – Principal
Animal Tower The Evans River Year 11 & 12 STEP students have designed and built this
animal tower in response to the bush fire clearing that occurred at the end of
2019. This has been an integral part of our Indigenous Tourism unit. This
clearing destroyed many native animal tree hides that are used by a range of
animals, from micro bats, to possums to our larger brained birds like the black
cockatoo. Each hole in the tower has an animal box behind it, all ranging in
size for specific species. Inside the structure is lined
with mesh for micro bats, however the penthouse
suite is reserved for the black cockatoos.
The unique artwork was designed by the STEP
students. Two sides tell the travelling story of
Bandjalang people moving through this site
gathering food and heading toward Gumigadah,
whilst the other two sides are designed to blend into
the bush.
Craig Gillespie, Head Teacher TAS
IMPORTANT NOTE Please be reminded that students are NOT
to arrive at school before 8:30am as there is
NO SUPERVISION prior to this time. We
have a duty of care to ensure our students
are safe and unfortunately students have
been arriving at school significantly earlier
than that.

Buddy Reading Program - OT This year in our Buddy Reading Program we have implemented a few
changes and are now including some occupational therapy (OT) activities and
speech therapy activities for our primary students. This is a great opportunity
for our high school student volunteers to participate and experience what OT
and speech therapy is like and provide them with an understanding of some
different career pathways they may want to pursue one day in the future!
These new inclusions to our buddy reading program came about due to a lack
of access to some of these services in our local area on a regular basis.
In this week’s newsletter we will focus on the benefits of occupational therapy
for our primary students.
OT helps kids play, improves their school performance, and aids their daily
activities. It also boosts their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment. With
OT, kids can develop fine motors skills so that they can grasp and release
toys and develop good handwriting or computer skills.
OT may combine a variety of strategies and can help children respond better
to their environment. Some OT strategies include:
Physical activities, such as stringing beads or doing puzzles, different
exercises to help a child develop coordination and body awareness
Play activities to help with interaction and communication
Adaptive strategies, including coping with transitions
Some of the skills OT may foster include:
Daily living skills, such as toilet training, dressing, brushing teeth, and
other grooming skills
Fine motor skills required for holding objects while handwriting or
cutting with scissors
Gross motor skills used for walking, climbing stairs, or riding a bike
Sitting, posture, or perceptual skills, such as telling the differences
between colours, shapes and sizes
Awareness of his or her body and its relation to others
Visual skills for reading and writing
Play, coping, self-help, problem solving, communication & social skills
