Marshall Makes State Squad Marshall Brown (Year 10) has been chosen as a
squad member for the NSW All Schools State
Hockey Program and will be heading to the Sydney
Academy of Sport training camp based at the
Narrabeen Sport & Recreation Centre June 17-20.
Marshall was selected following strong
performances with his club side Coraki, our school
team and the CHS North Coast representative
hockey team. During the camp, selectors will settle
on the make-up of the NSW All Schools Team to
play at the School Sport Australian Hockey
Championships at Newcastle August 4-10. Marshall
said “It would be awesome to be chosen for the
State team.” Marshall plays as a defender. Training for his Coraki club side
occurs on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week. Tuesday training is at Coraki
which is focussed on fitness. Thursday training is at Goonellabah on the turf
and is focussed on skills. “We also have a small hockey turf at home and I do
some training there each week.” Marshall said. Marshall has previously been
chosen for the NSW U13 Indoor and Outdoor teams and the NSW U15 Indoor
and Outdoor teams.

Kindness This week, Year 5/6C has been looking at the power of kindness. “Kindness is
doing what you can, where you are, with what you have”. Ivy Taig and Bijou
Blore-Jones were sent on a secret mission to film a video thanking all the
wonderful support staff in Primary. Thank you for all you do. Ivy Taig - Yr 5/6C
World Turtle Day Last week, to coincide with World Turtle Day, Year 5/6C and 6S attended a
Video Conference with the Australian Museum. We learnt about the human
impacts on the coral reefs, both good and bad. Some of the good impacts
are researching how to help and monitoring the conditions of the coral reefs.
Some of the bad human impacts are pollution, touching the coral and
damaging it, and taking bits of coral home.
We also learnt about the impact of pollution on turtles, they think that plastic
bags look like jelly fish and try to eat them, and they end up with plastic straws
up their nose. Dana Collingburn - Year 5

Lego in Primary Going to school at Evans River is even more fun thanks to Good360 and their
partner LEGO who have donated their surplus goods. Year 1/2 were the first
class to complete some LEGO challenges. The students enjoyed working in
teams to solve maths problems while having heaps of fun.

Martin Chatterton Author Visit On Thursday 30th May, author and illustrator
Martin Chatterton visited our school to perform
two shows to our students in K-4 and Yr5-8.
Martin entertained us with his funny jokes and
stories but best of all was when he did some
illustrations of our students - he turned them into
crazy characters like pineapples and rabbits. We
were even privileged to be the first audience to
hear Martin’s new book ‘Winter of the White Bear’.

Open Boys Rugby - Len Diett Shield On Tuesday the 21st May, the
1st XV took on Maclean High
school in the opening round
of the Len Diett Shield.
Despite having only 2
players who had ever played
Rugby union before, the
young men who represented
Evans River put in a strong
and courageous effort.
Evans opened the scoring
through some silky backline play set up by Tim Williams leading to Tyreece
Kapeen slicing through the opposition’s defence. From here the momentum
shifted to Maclean as they gained territory and scored 3 tries out wide to lead
at half time 19-5.
In the Second half our boys showed some strong forward play lead by Darcy
Banks and Sam Wilson which presented us with some good opportunities,
however handling errors allowed Maclean to score another 2 tries against the
run of play.
Despite this setback, the boys rallied and some good ball movement and an
offload from Darcy Banks to Zane Gaiter led to Zane scoring in the corner
leaving the end score 29-10 in favour of Maclean.
The Len Diett Shield is a newly formed Open Boys competition for all schools
on the North Coast. There are 2 pools of 6 schools and our boys will play 5
games with the top teams from each pool playing off in a final. Our team’s
next game is Tuesday of week 7 where we will take on St Mary’s Casino at
home in what will be a hard fought game.
Well done and Good Luck!

Helping Your Child Find Their Career The year 10 to 11/12 subject selection night is
being held early next term. It is important that students make an informed
choice that suits their needs and abilities.
Over the coming weeks I will be highlighting a number of useful parts of our
careers website that could help with senior subject selection.
Research has shown that young people value parents/carers who show a
genuine interest and understanding about their career pathways.
From the drop menu “For Parents” select “Useful Links” and select “Helping
Your Child Find Their Career” or by clicking here. This New Zealand website
has some excellent information and advice on helping your child with career
choices and decision making.
