Max McGillivray - Australian U14 Surfing Champion On Friday 29th October, Max McGillivray (Year 6) was crowned Australian
Under 14 Surfing Champion. Max has previously won many surfing
competitions. To gain the title, Max had to gain a placing in the top 8 in the
State titles and be rated in the top 30 in Australia to gain a place in the
Australian titles. Some surfers were able to join the competition as wild cards.
Max achieved a top 30 place in the later part of 2020. He then continued to
surf competitively and gained a place in the top 15 of the 30. Due to COVID,
competitors capture their surfing on video and submit to judges. Surfing right
and left waves is mandatory. Max surfed in multiple destinations and chose
his best two waves to submit. After judging, Max had scored the highest of the
competitors and was crowned Australian Surfing Champion.
Max’s training routine includes surfing before and after school. He likes Evans
Main Beach and Back Snapper. He can be up at 4:30am for a gym session,
followed by time in the water from 7:00am. He’s at school for 9:00am lessons.
Max can be back in the water from 3:45pm til 5:30pm - before it becomes
“sharky’.
Max is sponsored by Billabong, Creatures of Leisure, JS Surfboards and a
wax company.
Max is a mature, considerate and thoughtful young man who enjoys his time
surfing with his mates. He is a fine young member of our community.

making it through the initial submission. The team
had to come up with a pitch of a product-based
solution to answer how might we transform
discarded items into something useful, beautiful or
upcycled? The Evans River team created a
product that used recycled plastic to make a
number of household items, including benching,
cabinets and chopping boards. Although the team
did not make it through, they demonstrated
outstanding teamwork, perseverance and time
management skills in a highly stressful yet exciting
environment.
QuickSmart Maths The QuickSmart team in Primary would like to
congratulate Max McGillivray and Byron Hudson
on completing the QuickSmart program. Both
students have shown outstanding commitment to
their learning. They attended every lesson at
school and by zoom during the COVID-19 learning
from home period.
Max and Byron have reported that the work they
are doing in maths is much easier now that they
have learned more skills and better understand
what they are doing.
