Examine this glass of water……..

Can you guess how old it is?

The water in the glass may have fallen from the sky as rain just last week, but the water itself has been around pretty much as long as the earth has!   When the first fish crawled out of the ocean onto the land, your glass of water was part of that ocean.  When the Brontosaurus walked through lakes feeding on  plants, your glass of water was part of those lakes.  When kings and princesses, knights and squires took a drink from their wells, your glass of water was part of those wells.

The earth has a limited amount of water, and the water we do have is recycled again and again through what we call the…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

WATER CYCLE!!

What is the water cycle??

The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth. Since the water cycle is truly a "cycle," there is no beginning or end.

There water cycle is made up of 4 key components: Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Collection/Accumulation

EVAPORATION

Evaporation is when the sun heats up water from the earth and turns it into vapor. The water vapor leaves the earth and goes into the air.

CONDENSATION

Water vapor in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid, forming clouds.

PRECIPITATION

Precipitation occurs when so much water has condensed that the air cannot hold it anymore.  The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet or snow.

COLLECTION/ACCUMULATION

When water falls back to earth as precipitation, it then collects in the oceans, lakes or rivers or it may end up on land. The water is stored here and the cycle starts all over again!

Let’s make our own model of the water cycle!?!

• Pick up….– 1 piece of white construction paper– 1 plastic bag with materials– 3 containers: 1 with dirt (D), 1 with blue

rice (R), 1 with glue (G)– Scissors–MarkersAs a class lets do this together…..

THE WATER-CYCLE

SONG

Chorus:First you need some precipitationwhich will lead to accumulationEvaporation,CondensationThat's the water cycle!

First the rain comes down, and the ground gets muddiedBut don't you frown, cause it'll be all gone soonCause the sun and rain like you may have studiedAre part of a cycle that's in playWhen water comes down then dries awayThe system is nature's wayOf keeping things in tune

Chorus

When you see a cloud you don’t Need to hate itYou can be proud you know why that cloud is there!

Little water drops that evaporatedJoined up with their friends then start to flyInto a big group up in the skyAnd after some time goes byA cloud forms in the air

Chorus

Patter: Clouds (wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-wh)Sprinkles (tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap)Rain (rub rub rub rub rub rub rub rub rub)More rain (sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh)Pouring (slap slap slap slap slap slap slap slap slap)Evaporation (slur-urp)Up into the sky!

Chorus

Water Cycle Bracelets

Everyone was given a plastic bag containing:1 pipe cleaner6 beads

Take them out of the bag, and lets make our water cycle bracelets together.
