“The 2 Volcanoes of Maui”

Haleakala (House of the Sun) National Park covers most of the eastern part of Maui.

It has one of the most spectacular craters in the world. Haleakala is a dormant

volcano meaning it could possibly erupt again in the future as some scientists believe

that might happen within the next 100 years. Haleakala’s last eruption was in 1790

on the southern part of the island near Makena. The oldest rocks found and dated on

Haleakala is about 910,000 years old. The highest point “Pu’u Ula’ula” on Haleakala is

10,023 feet above sea level which is the highest point on Maui. Its depth measures

about 800 feet deep.

If measured from its base below sea level, Haleakala is actually over 25,000 in height

and covers over 28,000 acres or about 70% of Maui. Hawaiians believe that Haleakala

holds many special powers. It was the sight of many religious ceremonies. There are

many ancient ritual sites along the rim of the crater and sacred places within the

crater. There are still remains of temple shelters, religious platforms and foot trails.

There are stories of many early Hawaiians walking the entire mountain from its base

for their regular worships and prayers. Haleakala is still viewed as a “spiritual place

for Hawaiians that holds special powers”. For more information, visit

https://www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm.

I traveled to Philippines to celebrate the completion of a couple of our Rotary Club water projects. We were able to participate in ribbon cutting ceremonies which was awesome! Our Rotary Club of Lahaina partnered up with The RC of Paco-Manila and RC of Tacloban to bring potable water to students and communities in Tacloban. The water tanks that were installed will always have

enough water to supply 2 entire schools (and the community) with clean and potable water. We also delivered books & school supplies to 5 schools, visited an orphanage to deliver donations, and helped to feed the homeless & poor in the streets of Tacloban. It was a very humbling and heartfelt experience. It opened my eyes to the need around the world. So many have no access to clean water, something we take for granted. It reminded me to be grateful for all that I have. The 2nd half of the trip was spent in Coron and island hopping around the Palawan Islands, El Nido, Lagen Island, with our journey ending in Manila. The scuba diving was excellent (did some wreck dives and saw beautiful coral gardens), snorkeling was great as well, saw countless beautiful lagoons and majestic limestone cliffs, and oh, the endless beaches and crystal clear blue and turquoise waters. Magical!

You have to see if for yourself to

experience the sheer beauty.

Enjoyed awe inspiring sunsets with

the Palawan Islands in the horizon.

From your WHALER OHANA, enjoy the week and Happy Weekend!

Please take good care of yourself and each other.

With much Love & Aloha,

YOUR GM, Mila Salvador.
