I don’t mean the Bible, although it can be hard to understand too, but I mean God himself, and what he does or does not do. Why did he let this person die or suffer that illness? Why did I face this financial set back? Why didn’t he help this endeavor to work out when I needed it to work? Why doesn’t he do something about this person who is mistreating me? Why do the wicked pros- per and the good suffer? Have you ever felt disappointed with God? Have you ever faced a time when you felt sure that something would go one way be- cause surely God would help it go that way, because you really needed it to go that way, but then it went some completely other way? Usually, when we don’t understand what God is doing, it is something that seems like a big deal to us. A loved one is sick, or your family is falling apart, or you are facing financial set back, and you wonder why God isn’t doing something about this stuff. It can be hard to find him. It can be easy to be angry with him, even if you can’t admit that to yourself. It can be frightening and unsettling. Staying faithful can become difficult. During these difficult times, what makes them so hard is that we have expectations of God to which he has not responded. Surely, God will … but then he doesn’t. The trouble we thought we’d avoid lands on us with both feet, and it hurts, and we are left perplexed. But the faithful heart looks for God in the darkness. It doesn’t begin with the assumption that God, in order to be a good God, must do what I expect or demand. I am the servant, he is the mas- ter; I am the clay, he is the potter; I am the created, he is the Crea- tor. So if he doesn’t do what I expect, what unexpected thing is he doing? The faithful person knows that even when he is difficult to un- derstand, he is still good. Even when he allows the brokenness of the world to touch us, he is still loving. Even when I hurt, he is still faithful. So even when I cannot understand, I will still trust, be- cause he is good. Ethan Brown

Even When I Hurt, God is Still Faithful

Sometimes, God can be difficult to understand. Why do the wicked pros-per and the good suffer? Have you ever felt disappointed with God? Usually, when we don’t understand what God is doing, it is something that seems like a big deal to us. A loved one is sick, or your family is falling apart, or you are facing financial set back, and you wonder why God isn’t doing something about this stuff. It can be hard to find him.
