BROOKSIDE LIBRARY A lively library

Excitement fills the air at the Brookside Library.“With new development in homes, shopping, entertainment, and the Gathering Place opening in September, it’s a very exciting time to be in Brookside,” said branch manager Kelly Bayles.

Located in the heart of the Brookside district, near 45th and Peoria, the Brookside Library constantly is abuzz serving the diverse needs of this vibrant community. With Tulsa Public Schools’ Wright Elementary just across the street, the library is a haven for numerous students throughout the school year. The library offers an After-School Homework Club to provide free homework assistance, as well as a Kids Zone with fun crafts and activities to help students unwind after a busy day.

High-school senior Madilyn Smith regularly uses Brookside’s public computers and Wi-Fi to work on school projects, as it is a one-stop shop for all her educational needs. An avid reader, Madilyn

also appreciates the wide variety of books, movies and music available through the library.

Adults love and appreciate Brookside Library just the same. In fact, the library is home to one of the largest book discussion groups in the Tulsa City-County Library system, with 25 to 30 people regularly attending. The Brookside Book Discussion group meets on the second Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. to discuss a wide range of genres and topics.

Longtime library volunteers Marsha and Pat Hughes (pictured above) are huge supporters of the library. The Hugheses have lived in Brookside for 27 years and have watched the library go through several remodels and staff changes over the years. “But no matter the changes, I have always felt that the people at Brookside are friendlier and the staff always is so wonderful,” said Marsha, who, along with her husband, volunteers every Thursday afternoon. “It’s such a great place and part of it is the staff!”

“We have a committed and hard-working complement of volunteers,” Kelly said. “The staff

bring such a wealth of experience to serving our customers. The staff are deeply involved in the Brookside community, including participating in the Brookside Business Association, dressing in Halloween costume and walking in the annual BooHaHa parade, tending booths at neighborhood festivals like Brookside Herb Day, and doing outreach to our local schools, day cares and social-service agencies.”

Like the Hugheses, many of Brookside’s customers have been coming to the library for years and know staff by name, just as staff knows theirs.

“It’s validating when someone recognizes me outside of the library and smiles and says with gratitude that I helped them,” said Amy White, library associate.

The Brookside Library offers two Build A Reader storytimes each week: Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m. for babies and toddlers, and Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. for preschoolers. PAWS for Reading is offered once a month, giving children the opportunity to read to a therapy dog and receive a free book. Check the event listings in this guide for more details.

Meet the Brookside Library TeamEight members strong, the Brookside Library team prides itself in providing exceptional, friendly service to all.

Kelly Bayles, branch manager, formerly worked at Brookside from 2004 to 2011, where she first started as a volunteer before being hired as a shelver in 2004. Kelly returned to her roots in 2017 to take the helm. In her spare time, Kelly enjoys reading, knitting and playing in trivia nights. (In June 2016, this quiet, humble librarian was a big winner on Jeopardy!) Kelly’s all-time favorite read is the Time Quintet series by Madeleine L’Engle. “I try to reread it once a year for its wonderful characters, creative mix of science fiction and fantasy, and thought-provoking message.”

Dana Henson, youth librarian, has worked at Brookside for 12 years and a total of 20 years for Tulsa City-County Library. Reading, taking pictures, playing with her dogs, social media, spending time with her children, exploring Tulsa, meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends are among Dana’s favorite things to do. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of Seven Gables is now one of Dana’s all-time favorite books. “The characters reminded me of people who are alive today and I was intrigued by Hawthorne’s insights into those fictional characters. Same goes for Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations and Don Marquis’ Archy and Mehitabel.”

Ruth Mondragon, library associate, joined the Brookside team 17 years ago. In her spare time, Ruth loves to hang out with her family and dogs. In fact, Ruth’s most favorite read is a novel from the viewpoint of a dog: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. She said it’s extremely well-written and very moving.

Wilhelmina Anyanwu, shelver, has worked at Brookside for four years and has volunteered as a tutor for TCCL’s literacy service for almost seven years. Wilhelmina spends her leisure time doing artwork – mainly painting, reading a good novel or critiquing a movie. She said she loves Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White because it brings back childhood memories and it is a teaching moment for a child learning about sweet relationships and loyalty.

Maya Rogers, shelver, began working at Brookside in August 2016. She enjoys reading, quilting and sewing, and watching videos. Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus is among her favorite books as it is very engaging, with lots of twists and turns, plus she loves the magical setting.

Amy White, library associate, has worked for Tulsa City-County Library for nearly 20 years, with the last five years at Brookside. In her spare time,

Amy loves to garden, read and write poetry, and spend time with her 30-year-old Arabian horse. She said her favorite book actually is an epic poem: Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage by Lord Byron. The poem reminds her of her deceased father.

Ariel Stephenson joined the team almost two years ago. This customer service assistant can’t get enough of the Harry Potter series as they are “super entertaining and a blast to read, but have some incredibly valuable life lessons to offer as well.” When she’s not at work, you can find Ariel watching Netflix, traveling, painting, reading or spending time with her friends, family and pets.

Laura Salas, teen library associate, has worked at Brookside for nearly a year and a half, and for TCCL a total of seven years. In her free time, Laura enjoys watching New Japan Pro Wrestling and reading comic books. She also likes painting, knitting and playing board games. Regarding her all-time favorite read, it has to be J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings as she has read it at least 30 times and always has loved it for the world building and linguistics.
