FOUNDATION SPONSORED
The Science Education Foundation of Indiana began a scholarship program in 1980 to “encourage and assist
young people into becoming scientists and engineers and to practice their professions in Indiana.” This year
the Foundation will award three Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair student scholarships. The scholar-
ships are for one year and are not renewable. To be eligible to receive one of these scholarships, students
must be competing in the current year’s HSEF. Additionally, students must attend a college or university in
Indiana.
Joe B. Weaver Scholarship
The judges of this award will select the most outstanding student within the total applicant pool. The student is desig-
nated the Joe B. Weaver scholar, the highest award bestowed by the Foundation. The award consists of a $6,000
scholarship and a plaque given to the student for their school. Mr. Joe B. Weaver was a faithful and devoted SEFI
board member during the formative years of the Foundation and the development of the state science fair system. His
surviving wife, Mrs. Reba Weaver, has been very generous in supporting this scholarship. The Foundation is honored
to present this award each year.
John and Janet Davis Scholarship
This scholarship is named for Mr. and Mrs. John Davis. The couple has worked with science fairs since the inception of
the state’s regional network. A former science teacher and leader for numerous educational organizations, Mr. Davis
is the Executive Director Emeritus of the Foundation. Mr. Davis has also served as science fair director in South Bend,
Indiana, and was responsible for organizing the first state science fair. Mrs. Davis was his partner for directing the
state event. The award consists of a $3,000 scholarship to be given in the first semester of college.
Dr. Leslie A. Willig Founders Scholarship
This scholarship is named after the late Dr. Leslie A. Willig, one of the co-founders of the Science Education Founda-
tion of Indiana. Dr. Willig was a pioneer in the science fair program in Indiana, which is organized into regional science
fairs offering 12 major events for students to display their research exhibits. Dr. Willig was an outstanding educator,
business leader, and professional. The award consists of a $3,000 scholarship to be given in the first semester of col-
lege.
