Free street food party ndash Open to all staff

Next Friday our NCA Family are being invited to a street food party to mark an excitingnew era for our organisation On Friday 1 October from 12pm-230pm each care organisation will host a celebrationevent to mark the official launch of our single NHS Trust - the Northern Care Alliance NHS

Foundation Trust ndash and also to say thank you to staff Each of our hospital sites will be offering a selection of delicious hot meals including paellaburgers and jerk chicken There will be a variety of options on offer to accommodatedietary requirements The location of the marquees will be

Adhering to IPC All staff are asked to continue adhering to our infection prevention and control measureswhile at the street parties by keeping socially distanced at all times following the one-waysystems that will be in place for your safety and using the hand sanitiser that will beavailable on the day It is strictly one meal per staff member Staff must show their ID badge when claiming afree meal Please try to stagger arrival times with colleagues ndash there will be plenty of foodfor everyone What about community staff Those who are working in our community venues will be able to visit the hospital sites oralternatively enjoy an afternoon tea on the day with our special treat boxes that will beavailable for collection on the day from the following venues

Bury Care Organisation - Easing the pressure

Across our NCAFamily over the past 18 months we have experienced relentlesspressure on our services like we have never seen before Over at Fairfield this increaseddemand on our services combined with staff absences has led to the director teaminstigating a rapid improvement programme across the Care Organisation starting on 20September The director team would like to thank all those involved in the programme so far yourideas enthusiasm and support are appreciated Keep them coming We spoke to Sarah Wisely (pictured) divisional managing director ndash Scheduled Care abouthow she feels the first three days have gone ldquo The first three days have really demonstrated to me exceptional team effort We havealready seen commitments to shared understanding working collaboratively sharedownership and a great take up on our drop in sessions ldquoWe have seen great insight into the next steps of the rapid improvement effort excellentoutputs from each of the three groups and even more enthusiasm to finding solutions andagreeing tests of change to now start to test some of the process developed ldquoItrsquos an absolute privilege to form part of this event and more so be part of the BCO teamas ever they have risen to the challenge in developing exciting and innovative solutionssystems and processes as we start the journey of development and implementation of theinitial findingsrdquo

What is it Over a nine day period (starting on 20 September) with the support of colleagues from theLCO the rapid process improvement programme will look at

Site management (in and out of hours)Discharge processesWard departmental and clinical routines

Colleagues use pedal power for Organ Donation Week

Physios nurses doctors and occupational therapists from across the NCA have beenusing pedal power to get people talking about the importance of organ donation

This week is Organ Donation Week and teams across the North West have been racing tocomplete 7000 miles by running walking or cycling Each mile represents a personwaiting for a life-saving transplant

Colleagues working in Oldham Rochdale and Bury took part in static cycle ride onTuesday clocking up an extra 89 miles to add to their running total

Dr Andrew Drummond clinical lead for organ donation is pictured pedalling some milesand said ldquoIt is very important that this organ donation week everyone considers whattheir wishes would be if they had the opportunity to donate their organs in the event of theirdeath

ldquoWe all need to record our personal decision one way or other on the organ donor registerand talk things through with our loved ones so we leave them certain what our wisheswould berdquo

Colleagues in Salford held their popular Join the Journey event today (Thursday) andcycled 90 miles from Salford Royal to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust markingthe same journey donated organs take to transplant centres for life-saving operations

A group of cyclists took part picking up colleagues from Manchester Royal Infirmary andStepping Hill Hospital on the way

Lian Vaughan specialist nurse for organ donation based at Salford Care Organisationsaid ldquoA family will always be asked to support someonersquos decision about organ donationso please have that conversation with your loved ones today because at a time ofunimaginable grief and emotion it really will provide them with comfort to know that theyhave fulfilled your wishesrdquo

Quarterly Pulse Survey ndash Results

Thank you to all members of our NCA Family who took part in the Quarterly Pulse Surveyback in July More than 3000 of you took the opportunity to express your views on workingfor the NCA Results of the survey have now been received from our external provider Picker and havebeen shared with senior leaders across the organisation to help with action planning andimprovement work Results have also been shared with colleagues in Talent andOrganisational Development and Equality Diversity and Inclusion as well as StaffNetwork and Staff Side Chairs to support them in their work Read more - click here

We would like to introduce the Rochdale Care Organisation Nutrition Support team to youall A warm welcome particularly to Charis and Marina who joined the NCA Family inSeptember and are new to the NCA This small team are in place to support the prevention and reduction of malnutrition acrossthe care organisation They will use their specialist knowledge to manage the nutritionalcare of patients who are artificially fed in the community

This yearrsquos World Pharmacist Day (Saturday 25 September) will mark the incredible andessential contribution colleagues working in the profession make to ensure our patientsreceive the best and safest care possible

How many pharmacists do we have working across the NCA

There are 183 pharmacists working at the NCA with 78 of the time spent by Pharmacistson clinical activities and 33 of pharmacists are qualified to prescribe this ensures fewerprescribing errors and more timely medicines reconciliation takes placethinsp

What are we doing differently now since the pandemic

Since the beginning of the pandemic all sites across the NCA have adopted seven-day working and extended hours to ensure we are able to meet the demands on thepressures faced to the service during the pandemic This is something that has continuedinto post pandemic recovery to ensure we are able to provide a continuous service topatients regardless of which day of the week they are admitted into hospital

On a daily basis we have also supported each of the site vaccination hubs to implementthe national COVID vaccination programme vaccinating both staff and the public Over500000 vaccines will have been administered across the sites since the beginning of theservice last December Read more - click here

Colleagues in the Infection Prevention and Control Microbiology Pathology andHaematology departments across the NCA have received two prestigious national awardsfor groundbreaking projects delivered during the pandemic

The nominations shortlisted at this yearrsquos HSJ Patient Safety Awards Finals held this weekin Manchester included the successful trialling and implementation of safety measures inEmergency Departments to help protect patients from COVID-19 and the successfuldelivery of a pioneering new way of administering chemotherapy to patients in their ownhomes The Pharmacy Aseptic Team at Oldham played an important part in the project bysupplying and preparing the medicine for use at home and making sure the medicineswere handled safely Well done to the teams To read more on this news - click here

Offload programme Supporting your mental health

Letrsquos get ready to Offload and tackle our mental fitness

A mental fitness programme that is having a profound impact on the lives of familiesacross the North West is now being offered to the NCA Family

Offload has been run by the independent charity Rugby League Cares in partnership withSuper League club Salford Red Devils over the last four years and has transformed thelives of thousands of people

Utilising the life experiences of its presenters many of whom are former professionalsportsmen Offload helps participants learn the tools and techniques needed to becomeand stay mentally strong when confronted by the daily pressures we all face On MondayOctober 4 at 930am all colleagues are invited to join a free 90-minute online Offloadlsquotasterrsquo session that will introduce this exciting programme with the theme lsquoWhat is mentalfitnessrsquo

Get involved - Flexible Working Focus Groups

Following feedback from staff about difficulties accessing flexible working the NCA hasrecently set up a Flexible Working Task and Finish Group to look at how we can bettersupport staff who want to work flexibly and how we can empower managers and leaders tosupport this whilst balancing service needs As part of this work we are keen to gather feedback from staff across all areas of our Trustto better understand what flexible working looks like to you and how the Trust can look tosupport this moving forward We would also like to discuss current barriers to flexibleworking and how we can look to tackle these

In order to gather this feedback we are running several virtual focus groups via MicrosoftTeams Each focus group will aim to gather feedback from a particular group of staff as weappreciate that what may work for some staff may not work for others

During our first round of focus groups we are particularly interested to hear from staffworking clinically as well as staff who work on rotas or shifts Dates and times of thesesessions along with the links required to join can be found here

A mental fitness programme that is having a profound impact on the lives of familiesacross the North West is now being offered to the NCA Family

Offload has been run by the independent charity Rugby League Cares in partnership withSuper League club Salford Red Devils over the last four years and has transformed thelives of thousands of people

Utilising the life experiences of its presenters many of whom are former professionalsportsmen Offload helps participants learn the tools and techniques needed to becomeand stay mentally strong when confronted by the daily pressures we all face On MondayOctober 4 at 930am all colleagues are invited to join a free 90-minute online Offloadlsquotasterrsquo session that will introduce this exciting programme with the theme lsquoWhat is mentalfitnessrsquo

Get involved - Flexible Working Focus Groups

Following feedback from staff about difficulties accessing flexible working the NCA hasrecently set up a Flexible Working Task and Finish Group to look at how we can bettersupport staff who want to work flexibly and how we can empower managers and leaders tosupport this whilst balancing service needs As part of this work we are keen to gather feedback from staff across all areas of our Trustto better understand what flexible working looks like to you and how the Trust can look tosupport this moving forward We would also like to discuss current barriers to flexibleworking and how we can look to tackle these

In order to gather this feedback we are running several virtual focus groups via MicrosoftTeams Each focus group will aim to gather feedback from a particular group of staff as weappreciate that what may work for some staff may not work for others

During our first round of focus groups we are particularly interested to hear from staffworking clinically as well as staff who work on rotas or shifts Dates and times of thesesessions along with the links required to join can be found here

Across our NCAFamily over the past 18 months we have experienced relentlesspressure on our services like we have never seen before Over at Fairfield this increaseddemand on our services combined with staff absences has led to the director teaminstigating a rapid improvement programme across the Care Organisation starting on 20September The director team would like to thank all those involved in the programme so far yourideas enthusiasm and support are appreciated Keep them coming We spoke to Sarah Wisely (pictured) divisional managing director ndash Scheduled Care abouthow she feels the first three days have gone ldquo The first three days have really demonstrated to me exceptional team effort We havealready seen commitments to shared understanding working collaboratively sharedownership and a great take up on our drop in sessions ldquoWe have seen great insight into the next steps of the rapid improvement effort excellentoutputs from each of the three groups and even more enthusiasm to finding solutions andagreeing tests of change to now start to test some of the process developed ldquoItrsquos an absolute privilege to form part of this event and more so be part of the BCO teamas ever they have risen to the challenge in developing exciting and innovative solutionssystems and processes as we start the journey of development and implementation of theinitial findingsrdquo

Colleagues use pedal power for Organ Donation Week

Physios nurses doctors and occupational therapists from across the NCA have beenusing pedal power to get people talking about the importance of organ donation

This week is Organ Donation Week and teams across the North West have been racing tocomplete 7000 miles by running walking or cycling Each mile represents a personwaiting for a life-saving transplant

Colleagues working in Oldham Rochdale and Bury took part in static cycle ride onTuesday clocking up an extra 89 miles to add to their running total

Dr Andrew Drummond clinical lead for organ donation is pictured pedalling some milesand said ldquoIt is very important that this organ donation week everyone considers whattheir wishes would be if they had the opportunity to donate their organs in the event of theirdeath

ldquoWe all need to record our personal decision one way or other on the organ donor registerand talk things through with our loved ones so we leave them certain what our wisheswould berdquo

Colleagues in Salford held their popular Join the Journey event today (Thursday) andcycled 90 miles from Salford Royal to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust markingthe same journey donated organs take to transplant centres for life-saving operations

A group of cyclists took part picking up colleagues from Manchester Royal Infirmary andStepping Hill Hospital on the way

How many pharmacists do we have working across the NCA

There are 183 pharmacists working at the NCA with 78 of the time spent by Pharmacistson clinical activities and 33 of pharmacists are qualified to prescribe this ensures fewerprescribing errors and more timely medicines reconciliation takes placethinsp

What are we doing differently now since the pandemic

Since the beginning of the pandemic all sites across the NCA have adopted seven-day working and extended hours to ensure we are able to meet the demands on thepressures faced to the service during the pandemic This is something that has continuedinto post pandemic recovery to ensure we are able to provide a continuous service topatients regardless of which day of the week they are admitted into hospital

Colleagues in the Infection Prevention and Control Microbiology Pathology andHaematology departments across the NCA have received two prestigious national awardsfor groundbreaking projects delivered during the pandemic

The nominations shortlisted at this yearrsquos HSJ Patient Safety Awards Finals held this weekin Manchester included the successful trialling and implementation of safety measures inEmergency Departments to help protect patients from COVID-19 and the successfuldelivery of a pioneering new way of administering chemotherapy to patients in their ownhomes The Pharmacy Aseptic Team at Oldham played an important part in the project bysupplying and preparing the medicine for use at home and making sure the medicineswere handled safely Well done to the teams To read more on this news - click here

Following feedback from staff about difficulties accessing flexible working the NCA hasrecently set up a Flexible Working Task and Finish Group to look at how we can bettersupport staff who want to work flexibly and how we can empower managers and leaders tosupport this whilst balancing service needs As part of this work we are keen to gather feedback from staff across all areas of our Trustto better understand what flexible working looks like to you and how the Trust can look tosupport this moving forward We would also like to discuss current barriers to flexibleworking and how we can look to tackle these

In order to gather this feedback we are running several virtual focus groups via MicrosoftTeams Each focus group will aim to gather feedback from a particular group of staff as weappreciate that what may work for some staff may not work for others

During our first round of focus groups we are particularly interested to hear from staffworking clinically as well as staff who work on rotas or shifts Dates and times of thesesessions along with the links required to join can be found here

Feedback from Google Review I attended Fairfield General Hospital AampE recently From being met at theentrance for COVID-19 checks to being discharged I was treated with care courtesy considerationsincerity and professionalism by all members of staff that I encountered All went busily about their dutiesand each procedure was explained to me before it happened I was very grateful for my treatment andprognosis All staff should walk around proud with their heads held high

Physios nurses doctors and occupational therapists from across the NCA have beenusing pedal power to get people talking about the importance of organ donation

This week is Organ Donation Week and teams across the North West have been racing tocomplete 7000 miles by running walking or cycling Each mile represents a personwaiting for a life-saving transplant

Colleagues working in Oldham Rochdale and Bury took part in static cycle ride onTuesday clocking up an extra 89 miles to add to their running total

Dr Andrew Drummond clinical lead for organ donation is pictured pedalling some milesand said ldquoIt is very important that this organ donation week everyone considers whattheir wishes would be if they had the opportunity to donate their organs in the event of theirdeath

ldquoWe all need to record our personal decision one way or other on the organ donor registerand talk things through with our loved ones so we leave them certain what our wisheswould berdquo

Colleagues in Salford held their popular Join the Journey event today (Thursday) andcycled 90 miles from Salford Royal to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust markingthe same journey donated organs take to transplant centres for life-saving operations

A group of cyclists took part picking up colleagues from Manchester Royal Infirmary andStepping Hill Hospital on the way

Lian Vaughan specialist nurse for organ donation based at Salford Care Organisationsaid ldquoA family will always be asked to support someonersquos decision about organ donationso please have that conversation with your loved ones today because at a time ofunimaginable grief and emotion it really will provide them with comfort to know that theyhave fulfilled your wishesrdquo

We would like to introduce the Rochdale Care Organisation Nutrition Support team to youall A warm welcome particularly to Charis and Marina who joined the NCA Family inSeptember and are new to the NCA This small team are in place to support the prevention and reduction of malnutrition acrossthe care organisation They will use their specialist knowledge to manage the nutritionalcare of patients who are artificially fed in the community

This yearrsquos World Pharmacist Day (Saturday 25 September) will mark the incredible andessential contribution colleagues working in the profession make to ensure our patientsreceive the best and safest care possible

How many pharmacists do we have working across the NCA

There are 183 pharmacists working at the NCA with 78 of the time spent by Pharmacistson clinical activities and 33 of pharmacists are qualified to prescribe this ensures fewerprescribing errors and more timely medicines reconciliation takes placethinsp

What are we doing differently now since the pandemic

Since the beginning of the pandemic all sites across the NCA have adopted seven-day working and extended hours to ensure we are able to meet the demands on thepressures faced to the service during the pandemic This is something that has continuedinto post pandemic recovery to ensure we are able to provide a continuous service topatients regardless of which day of the week they are admitted into hospital

On a daily basis we have also supported each of the site vaccination hubs to implementthe national COVID vaccination programme vaccinating both staff and the public Over500000 vaccines will have been administered across the sites since the beginning of theservice last December Read more - click here

Colleagues in the Infection Prevention and Control Microbiology Pathology andHaematology departments across the NCA have received two prestigious national awardsfor groundbreaking projects delivered during the pandemic

The nominations shortlisted at this yearrsquos HSJ Patient Safety Awards Finals held this weekin Manchester included the successful trialling and implementation of safety measures inEmergency Departments to help protect patients from COVID-19 and the successfuldelivery of a pioneering new way of administering chemotherapy to patients in their ownhomes The Pharmacy Aseptic Team at Oldham played an important part in the project bysupplying and preparing the medicine for use at home and making sure the medicineswere handled safely Well done to the teams To read more on this news - click here

A mental fitness programme that is having a profound impact on the lives of familiesacross the North West is now being offered to the NCA Family

Offload has been run by the independent charity Rugby League Cares in partnership withSuper League club Salford Red Devils over the last four years and has transformed thelives of thousands of people

Utilising the life experiences of its presenters many of whom are former professionalsportsmen Offload helps participants learn the tools and techniques needed to becomeand stay mentally strong when confronted by the daily pressures we all face On MondayOctober 4 at 930am all colleagues are invited to join a free 90-minute online Offloadlsquotasterrsquo session that will introduce this exciting programme with the theme lsquoWhat is mentalfitnessrsquo

Letrsquos get ready to Offload and tackle our mental fitness

A mental fitness programme that is having a profound impact on the lives of familiesacross the North West is now being offered to the NCA Family

Offload has been run by the independent charity Rugby League Cares in partnership withSuper League club Salford Red Devils over the last four years and has transformed thelives of thousands of people

Utilising the life experiences of its presenters many of whom are former professionalsportsmen Offload helps participants learn the tools and techniques needed to becomeand stay mentally strong when confronted by the daily pressures we all face On MondayOctober 4 at 930am all colleagues are invited to join a free 90-minute online Offloadlsquotasterrsquo session that will introduce this exciting programme with the theme lsquoWhat is mentalfitnessrsquo

guidance advice and resources for colleagues who feel they need more support

A series of information sessions have been organised to provide you with a detaileddescription of what you can access within the programme to help support yourself yourcolleagues and your staff who may be experiencing stress

Get involved - Flexible Working Focus Groups

Following feedback from staff about difficulties accessing flexible working the NCA hasrecently set up a Flexible Working Task and Finish Group to look at how we can bettersupport staff who want to work flexibly and how we can empower managers and leaders tosupport this whilst balancing service needs As part of this work we are keen to gather feedback from staff across all areas of our Trustto better understand what flexible working looks like to you and how the Trust can look tosupport this moving forward We would also like to discuss current barriers to flexibleworking and how we can look to tackle these

In order to gather this feedback we are running several virtual focus groups via MicrosoftTeams Each focus group will aim to gather feedback from a particular group of staff as weappreciate that what may work for some staff may not work for others

During our first round of focus groups we are particularly interested to hear from staffworking clinically as well as staff who work on rotas or shifts Dates and times of thesesessions along with the links required to join can be found here

Feedback from Google Review I attended Fairfield General Hospital AampE recently From being met at theentrance for COVID-19 checks to being discharged I was treated with care courtesy considerationsincerity and professionalism by all members of staff that I encountered All went busily about their dutiesand each procedure was explained to me before it happened I was very grateful for my treatment andprognosis All staff should walk around proud with their heads held high

Feedback from Care Opinion Everything about my most recent experience at Fairfield General Hospitalwas positive The staff on the Silver Heart Unit were absolutely lovely from start to finish The unit seemedextremely well run efficient organised and very clean I felt in very safe hands The procedure wasexplained very well and again was done safely and efficiently with no problems The pre-op a few daysearlier was also a positive experience The gentleman was thorough and explained everything with such anice manner Irsquove got a lot going on with my health and it really does make a difference when youexperience such wonderful care Thank you

Celebrating our pharmacists

This yearrsquos World Pharmacist Day (Saturday 25 September) will mark the incredible andessential contribution colleagues working in the profession make to ensure our patientsreceive the best and safest care possible

Here Hera Ali specialist clinical pharmacist tells us why it is so important we mark thisannual event

How many pharmacists do we have working across the NCA

There are 183 pharmacists working at the NCA with 78 of the time spent by Pharmacistson clinical activities and 33 of pharmacists are qualified to prescribe this ensures fewerprescribing errors and more timely medicines reconciliation takes placethinsp

What are we doing differently now since the pandemic

Since the beginning of the pandemic all sites across the NCA have adopted seven-day working and extended hours to ensure we are able to meet the demands on thepressures faced to the service during the pandemic This is something that has continuedinto post pandemic recovery to ensure we are able to provide a continuous service topatients regardless of which day of the week they are admitted into hospital

On a daily basis we have also supported each of the site vaccination hubs to implementthe national COVID vaccination programme vaccinating both staff and the public Over500000 vaccines will have been administered across the sites since the beginning of theservice last December Read more - click here

NCA scoop two HSJ Patient Safety Awards

Colleagues in the Infection Prevention and Control Microbiology Pathology andHaematology departments across the NCA have received two prestigious national awardsfor groundbreaking projects delivered during the pandemic

The nominations shortlisted at this yearrsquos HSJ Patient Safety Awards Finals held this weekin Manchester included the successful trialling and implementation of safety measures inEmergency Departments to help protect patients from COVID-19 and the successfuldelivery of a pioneering new way of administering chemotherapy to patients in their ownhomes The Pharmacy Aseptic Team at Oldham played an important part in the project bysupplying and preparing the medicine for use at home and making sure the medicineswere handled safely Well done to the teams To read more on this news - click here

Get involved - Flexible Working Focus Groups

Following feedback from staff about difficulties accessing flexible working the NCA hasrecently set up a Flexible Working Task and Finish Group to look at how we can bettersupport staff who want to work flexibly and how we can empower managers and leaders tosupport this whilst balancing service needs As part of this work we are keen to gather feedback from staff across all areas of our Trustto better understand what flexible working looks like to you and how the Trust can look tosupport this moving forward We would also like to discuss current barriers to flexibleworking and how we can look to tackle these

In order to gather this feedback we are running several virtual focus groups via MicrosoftTeams Each focus group will aim to gather feedback from a particular group of staff as weappreciate that what may work for some staff may not work for others

During our first round of focus groups we are particularly interested to hear from staffworking clinically as well as staff who work on rotas or shifts Dates and times of thesesessions along with the links required to join can be found here

Feedback from Google Review I attended Fairfield General Hospital AampE recently From being met at theentrance for COVID-19 checks to being discharged I was treated with care courtesy considerationsincerity and professionalism by all members of staff that I encountered All went busily about their dutiesand each procedure was explained to me before it happened I was very grateful for my treatment andprognosis All staff should walk around proud with their heads held high

Feedback from Care Opinion Everything about my most recent experience at Fairfield General Hospitalwas positive The staff on the Silver Heart Unit were absolutely lovely from start to finish The unit seemedextremely well run efficient organised and very clean I felt in very safe hands The procedure wasexplained very well and again was done safely and efficiently with no problems The pre-op a few daysearlier was also a positive experience The gentleman was thorough and explained everything with such anice manner Irsquove got a lot going on with my health and it really does make a difference when youexperience such wonderful care Thank you

Letrsquos get ready to Offload and tackle our mental fitness

A mental fitness programme that is having a profound impact on the lives of familiesacross the North West is now being offered to the NCA Family

Offload has been run by the independent charity Rugby League Cares in partnership withSuper League club Salford Red Devils over the last four years and has transformed thelives of thousands of people

Utilising the life experiences of its presenters many of whom are former professionalsportsmen Offload helps participants learn the tools and techniques needed to becomeand stay mentally strong when confronted by the daily pressures we all face On MondayOctober 4 at 930am all colleagues are invited to join a free 90-minute online Offloadlsquotasterrsquo session that will introduce this exciting programme with the theme lsquoWhat is mentalfitnessrsquo
