Community members and PenLight representatives cut a ribbon to highlight the project during the Key Peninsula Livable Community Fair on Saturday, May 10. The project, built on a shelter that a handful of groups constructed, began to generate electricity on March 7. It helps to offset energy costs that are involved with operating the civic center, and it also provides real- time data, which will be used in cooperation with Peninsula School District classrooms. The solar system produced nearly 700 kilowatt-hours of energy during the month of May. Teachers and students will have access to the system through a web-based monitoring system. They will follow a curriculum that details renewable-energy science, and they will be able to tour the project site. The shelter was constructed through the support of the Key Peninsula Civic Center Association, the Key Peninsula Metropolitan Parks District, the Key Peninsula Parks and Recreation Foundation, the Key Peninsula Land Use Advisory Commission and the Angel Guild. The solar installation was under the direction and funding from Peninsula Light Co. and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Artisan Electric, Inc., a Seattle-based union electrical contractor, installed the solar system and monitoring station. Energy produced will benefit civic center tenants, which include the Key Peninsula Family Resource Center, Children’s Home Society, Key Peninsula Historical Society, Two Waters Arts Alliance and the Key Peninsula News. Numerous community entities have banded together to present the Peninsula Emergency Preparedness and Recovery Fair from 9:00am– 3:00pm Saturday, Aug. 23, at 12002 Peacock Hill Ave. NW in Gig Harbor. There will be displays, classes and demonstrations, plus multiple handouts, all geared to give vital information aimed to help your preparedness efforts. Some topics include water storage, or how to feed and shelter your family in a disaster scenario. Others include information on Community Emergency Response Teams, the American Red Cross and ham radio groups. Attendees also will learn what churches, government agencies and community organizations will do to help during and after a disaster. Gig Harbor is near the Cascadia Subduction zone. Additional faults run east to west under our communities. We have Mount Rainier, an active volcano, in our backyard. They all provide reasons to have an adequate plan for survival in a disaster. Give people power to Keep rates reasonable

Electric Ambassadors

P e n i n s u l a L i g h t C o m p a n y N e w s l e t t e r JULY / AUG 2014

The Electric Ambassadors Program is aiming for the same goal after 15 years–to keep power reliable and affordable. Peninsula Light Company founded the grassroots program to give a voice to our members as state and federal officials work on policies that can affect our utility.

Elected officials want to hear from the people they represent, because that’s who they work for. We’d like you to join our Electric Ambassadors program, because it will give you an opportunity to learn about legislation in the works, and provide you access to contact lawmakers to let them know when their actions could result in increased rates.

Members of the Electric Ambassadors program receive communications several times a year that are meant to provide education on issues of importance in the utility industry. When an issue comes up that could affect PenLight, you will have all the information you need so you can write a letter, call or email your legislators. Participation is always voluntary.

It’s easy to join the Electric Ambassadors. Sign up at www.penlight.org/ambassador-program or call

us at 253.857.1351.

More than 100 kids participated in a variety of dashes on June 14 during KeyPen Parks’ third annual PenLight Fun Run. About $200 was raised for

Parent-Teacher Associations on the Key Peninsula. The contributions help fund programs at Vaughn, Minter Creek and Evergreen elementary schools as well as Key Peninsula Middle School.

Day-of-race registrations bumped up the number participants in the featured 5-kilometer race to more than 50, KeyPen Parks Recreation Coordinator Jessica Smeall said. The event started at Gateway Park and finished at 360 Park. The newest event was a mile-long kids’ race. Smeall said she was impressed that first- and second-graders tackled the hilly course.

Overall, Evergreen won the event with 8.9 percent of the student body participating. There also were volunteers from each school, and Minter Creek led the way with 11.

Full race results are at www.keypenparks.com.
