Peninsula Light Co. employees participated both with an exercise at our headquarters building and with the Multi-Agency Coordination task force located at Gig Harbor Fire District 5 on June 8. Employees evacuated the building and gathered outside, where they were provided different sheets of paper with more information about the drill. While some learned they were injured, others were instructed to gather support materials from the immediate area, including their personal vehicles. The assumptions were grim: PenLight’s headquarters was destroyed, the Narrows bridges were closed to traffic, overpasses were down on state Route 16, the Purdy bridge crumbled into the water, and there was no electricity throughout western Washington. The immediate expectation was for the majority of the power grid to be out for at least a week, if not a month. PenLight activated its disaster recovery plan. As team members exercised emergency procedures, including communication via satellite phone and HAM radio, more details from surrounding agencies trickled in. Patients were triaged, tents were erected, and those who were not told they were “injured” went to locate additional supplies. Food, water and medical equipment were at the top of the list, followed by warmth and comfort. Employees engaged in a detailed discussion about how to shelter in place, reach family members through an out-of-state contact, and how we can improve our preparedness, both at work and at home. Emergency scenario simulates devastating Earthquake(Continued from page 1)

Meanwhile, key personnel relocated to the Emergency Operations Center and coordinated efforts between multiple jurisdictions in an attempt to assess and respond to the disaster. Representatives from the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula fire districts, the National Guard and the health care industry provided regular updates

throughout the day with responses to changing conditions, actions and needs. Their responses were plugged into the region-wide Cascadia Rising drill

that included Pierce County and state resources, so priorities were established and examined before commitments for help could be made.

At our headquarters, the drill was reviewed later in the week. Additional materials and access to supplies has become a priority, and attention also focused on how our field crews may be able to reach substations and other infrastructure that will be very critical during the recovery period.

For more information about what to do in an emergency, visit www.pep-c.org.

PenLight Power Walkers Raise More Than $15,000 to Fight Cancer

Food Backpacks 4 Kids aims to provide nutritional needs to some of our community’s most vulnerable people. During the school year, volunteers load food and other items into backpacks for students to take home during the weekend. Those needs don’t go away during the summer.

Instead of distributing goods at school, Food Backpacks 4 Kids will have a summer program three days per week at the Key Peninsula Civic Center, 17010 S. Vaughn Road KPN. The hours will be from 11am to 2pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through Aug. 19. Lunch will begin at 11:30am.

Executive Director Mary Williams said the program will be supported by fundraisers and grants as well as donations received during the Saturday Farmers Market at the former Peninsula Gardens facility, 5503 Wollochet Drive NW in Gig Harbor. A Boy Scouts troop will participate on Mondays and Wednesdays, thanks to a grant from Angel Guild, Williams said. Other participants, such as the United Way, have been involved in the past.

The Food Backpacks 4 Kids organization also has new donation stations located at four different fire stations within Gig Harbor Fire District 5. Each shed is open from 8am to 8pm daily and can accept non-perishable food items. For a list of items in need, visit www.foodbackpacks4kids.org/donate.

The drill was reviewed later in the week to discuss what else could be done.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his fiancée, pop star Ciara, provided the biggest highlight of the Gig Harbor Relay for Life last month when Wilson touched down in a helicopter at the Peninsula High School baseball field. Wilson and Ciara walked laps with Relay participants and provided words of encouragement over the public address system during their surprise visit on June 17.

The PenLight Power Walkers finished second as a team in their annual drive to help the American Cancer Society find a cure when they raised $15,687. Team Look4All, sponsored by the Larson Automotive Group, led fundraising efforts with more than $33,300 in donations. The Gig Harbor relay brought in nearly $120,000 this year.

Maritime Gig 2016

PenLight employees and their families took part in the annual Maritime

Gig Festival parade during a perfect Saturday along Harborview Drive in

downtown Gig Harbor on June 4. The event

is the biggest of the year for the Gig Harbor

Chamber of Commerce, and we are proud to

show our commitment to the community

every year as we march alongside a few of our

vehicles and hand out treats to attendees.
