Close Encounters of the Bird KindFriday, April 13 | 8:30 – 10:30am | Red Barn Reserve$10/members | $15/non-membersAnne Balogh from Licking Park District offers an up-close and personal experience with avian inhabitants of the Red Barn Reserve. Observe the bird-banding process from net-ting to banding to release. While no species sightings can be guaranteed, a variety of migrating birds are expected.

Coffee and CanvasSaturday, April 14 | 9:30 – noon | Visitors Center$25/members | $30/non-membersLearn the basics of acrylic painting as Licking County artist Kathy Anderson guides you step-by-step through recreating a scene from The Arboretum with your own special touches. No art experience necessary. Fee includes all painting sup-plies and light refreshments.

Honoring Earth Day: Tree PlantingFriday, April 20 | 1 – 3:30pm | Red Barn ReserveFREE‘Tis the season for tree planting! We’re upholding the tradition of celebrating Earth Day by reforesting areas to increase natural beauty and habitat. Join us as we plant a variety of native trees to enhance our Red Barn Reserve. While you’re here, learn why it’s important to purchase native plant mate-rial that originates from locally-sourced seeds.

Foraging for Wild Edibles: Weed ‘em & Eat!Saturday, April 21 | 12:30 – 2 pm | Visitors Center$10/members | Free/volunteers | $15/non-membersLearn how to forage, sample spring wild edibles and take a 45-minute hike to identify, collect and taste nature’s garden. Make sure to bring your camera and note-taking material. Foraging is prohibited at The Dawes Arboretum unless part of an Arboretum sanctioned program.

Native Azalea Collection TourMay (Date TBA) | Visitors Center$10/members | $15/non-membersTreat your senses to the sights and smells of one of the finest floral displays at The Arbore-tum. This seasonal walking tour offers an in-depth look at our U.S. native azalea collection and its care. Because peak bloom cannot be exactly predicted, please email Beckie Fisher at rlfisher@dawesarb.org to be alerted to when the tour date is confirmed and registration is open.

Spring Scavenger HuntThroughout MayFREEMay 24 is National Scavenger Hunt Day! Help us celebrate by exploring The Arboretum’s grounds with a self-guided scavenger hunt. Participation sheets will be available in the Visitors Center during the month of May. Drop-off your completed hunt to be entered to win a prize!

The Thrills, Spills and all the Fills of Container GardeningSaturday, May 5 | 10am - noon | Zand Education Center$30/members | $40/non-membersLearn about the versatility of containers and explore exciting plants and magnificent color combinations in this hands-on class. Choose from a pre-selected variety of plants, and use the skills developed in class to arrange a container of your own to take home. Please register by May 1.

Sustainable Landscape Series: Plant a Pollinator WonderlandFriday, May 11 | 1 – 3:30pm | Visitors Center$10/members | $15/non-membersDid you know nearly 75% of all flowering plants need the help of animals to move their heavy pollen grains from plant to plant for fertilization? Join us for a presentation on the importance of pollinators and what you can do to attract them to your own landscape

including how to plant a prairie. Then embark on a short walking tour to observe pollinators in both formal flower beds and newly established native prairies. Each participant will take home a collection of native plant seeds.

Spring Mole Salamander MigrationLate February – early April (Date TBA) | Visitors Center$3/members | Free/volunteers | $6/non-membersWhile salamanders return faithfully to The Arboretum’s Cypress Swamp each spring, migration only occurs under certain conditions. Migration typically takes place during an early spring rain, though in recent years migration has oc-curred as early as late winter. Join us for a short presentation and the opportunity to experience this unique phenomenon! Email your name and contact information to rlfisher@dawesarb.org to sign up to receive an email when condi-tions are right for migration and program registration is open.

Preschool Storybook Science*2nd & 4th Thursdays | 10 – 10:45am | Visitors CenterFREEPreschoolers explore quality children’s literature through songs, games, crafts, creative movement, outdoor exploration and hands-on science. For children ages three to five and their caregivers.

Family Night: Under the Sugar MoonFriday, March 2 | 6 – 7:30pm | Main Shelter House$5/members | $10/non-membersJoin Arboretum staff for a night hike under the Sugar Moon. Enjoy the Deep Woods as we explore the history of maple syrup production. We’ll stop at the Log Cabin to warm up next to a roaring fire complete with hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and maple syrup tastings. Botany Bus Trip: Krohn ConservatorySaturday, March 10 | 7:30am – 6:30pm | Visitors Center$65/members | $85/non-membersGet out of town and have some fun with Dr. David Branden-burg, Arboretum Botanist! First stop, Krohn Conservatory, built in the height of the Art Deco era. Our guided tour features 3,500 exotic plant species from around the world and includes the famous rainforest waterfall. Next we will head to the original Montgomery Inn to feast! Our trip concludes with a “World Food Tour” at Jungle Jim’s International Market. Learn the botany of exotic foods as David guides you through this 6.5 acre market. Registration fee includes lunch.

It’s the Arbor Day Festival—a celebrationof trees and nature, presented by Park National Bank.

Expect a fun-filled day with hands-on activities for families like crafts, educational displays, tree climbing

and special entertainment. Participants won’t want to miss presentations featuring animals from the

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium at noon and 1pm. Purchase lunch from a food truck, and plan to stay

awhile to enjoy all this celebration has to offer.

Arbor Day Festival admission is free. This event is made possible through generous support from

presenting sponsor Park National Bank, media sponsor Ohio Magazine, children’s program sponsor Bartlett Tree Experts and The Arboretum’s

many volunteers and partner organizations.

Ohioans in the Great War: Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of World War ISaturday, March 10 | 1 – 2pm | Visitors CenterFree/members & volunteers | $5/non-members2018 is the 100th Anniversary of the ending of World War I. To commemorate this occasion, The Arboretum is host-ing Kyle Yoho, Education Director for The Castle Museum in Marietta, Ohio, to discuss the experiences of Ohioans, including The Arboretum co-founders’ son Beman Dawes Jr., during the Great War. Original photographs and docu-ments will be shown.

Pressed Plants: Botanical Art Workshop Friday, March 16 | 7 – 9pm | Visitors Center$25/members | $30/non-membersThe act of pressing plant specimens has been performed for centuries for documentation and research. But the process also allows for artistic expression. Framed botanicals are a current decorating trend showcased in magazines and design blogs. Learn the method of pressing plants, and make a beautiful take-home mount suitable for framing that can last for generations.

Wacky Woodcocks Off Trail Night HikeFriday, March 23 | 7:30 – 9:30pm | Visitors Center$10/members | $15/non-membersThe American Woodcock, or timberdoodle, is a small, ground-dwelling, native shorebird found in eastern North America. Learn about the life history of this peculiar bird during a brief indoor presentation, and then venture out-doors to try to observe its dazzling aerial courtship display.

War Memorabilia from the Dawes FamilySaturday, March 31 | 2 – 3:30pm | Visitors CenterFree/members & volunteers | $5/non-membersAmong the historic collections housed at The Arboretum, are artifacts from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II that are rarely displayed. Learn about the Dawes family’s participation in these American conflicts while the history department shows off its collec-tion. Please note, photography will not be permitted.

Beneath the Bark: Asian Longhorned Beetle First Detector TrainingThursday, April 5 | 8:30 am – noon | Visitors Center$20/members | $25/non-membersInvasive wood-boring insects can have a tremendous impact on our forests. Reminiscent of the Emerald ash borer, the Asian longhorned beetle presents a new threat. Early detec-tion is key in containing the insect and treating impacted trees. This program will equip arborists, natural resource pro-fessionals and homeowners – anyone who routinely inspects or maintains trees – with the knowledge needed to recognize the signs and symptoms of these detrimental insects.

Wildflower Walk & Ramp Celebration Friday, April 6 | 1 – 3pm | Visitors Center$10/members | $15/non-membersThe wildflowers and fragrant ramps that carpet the Woodland Garden in early spring are a sight to see. Enjoy an indoor presentation on the gems of this special garden and the legendary wild onion that fills the forest floor. Then take a tour of the wildflowers and harvest up to one pound of ramps to take home to your garden.

Beginning BonsaiSaturday, April 7 & 14 | 9 – 11am | Zand Education Center$35/members | $40/non-membersThis two-session course introduces participants to the art of bonsai. The first session leads students through the history of bonsai, types of plants to use, cultural needs, containers, bonsai soil and tools needed along with how to prune and style a tree. During the second session, each student plants a tree in a bonsai container to take home to nurture.

Mother’s Day Wagon ToursMay 13 | 1pm & 3pm

Bring mom to The Arboretum for an expert-led wagon tour of our beautiful grounds. Relax and enjoy the color of spring as a guide interprets gardens, plant collections and Arboretum

history. Avoid the line by purchasing tickets in advance. Tickets are $2, and mom rides for free! Seating is limited.

The Arboretum’s Spring Plant Sale and Garden Fair*

May 19 | 9am – 2pmShop from a variety of shrubs, trees and perennials for your

home landscape. Arboretum experts will be available to answer your questions about plant care and suitability for

your location. A variety of vendors will complement the sale with additional plants and garden products. Members receive

a discount on plants sold by The Arboretum during the sale.
