Council hosts two major events for the Shire
Council is thrilled to announce two exciting events taking place within the Shire. Council has successfully acquired the Anne Frank exhibition to be shown at The Gallery in Balranald from 4 December through to 31 January. The formal opening will be on 4 December from 6.30pm with special guest Willem Cosijn, the Consul-General for the Netherlands in Australia and also members of the Anne Frank Australia board. The exhibition ‘Anne Frank - A History for Today’ was created by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam (Holland), which was established in 1957 to preserve and maintain the Secret Annex, where Anne and seven other Jews hid for more than two years during the Second World War. In the exhibition ‘Anne Frank – A History for Today’, the history of Anne Frank is presented to trigger people to think about human rights and to encourage people to take action where needed. It is
important to keep in mind that the exhibition is not only a story about a Jewish girl who was forced to go into hiding during the Second World War, but thanks to Anne Frank’s diary, her story can serve as a symbol for the countless unknown stories that have been forgotten from this period. This exhibition is not being shown elsewhere in the region, and is a great opportunity to learn the story of Anne Frank and what she
and others endured during the Holocaust. Council is also pleased to announce the official opening of the Discovery Centre which will take place on December 19. Residents would be aware of the construction process that has taken place at the Discovery Centre over the past year. The Discovery Centre development is made up of three main buildings; the Visitor Information Centre, Interpretive Pavilion and Café. An amenities area is located at the end of the Café, and a
playground for the children sits to the side of the buildings, incorporated into the landscape of the complex. Also included is a bus shelter and ample parking areas for visitors towing caravans. Significant and final works are currently underway; namely the café fit out, playground and landscaping. Set up and furnishing of the Visitor Information Centre is currently underway and the final piece of the Discovery Centre jigsaw - the Interpretive Pavilion, will be installed from 1st through to 16th December. Whilst interest in the project is welcome, we need to remind everyone that this is a work site and there is constant use of machinery, and as such we request that all members of the public stay outside the temporary fencing and webbing areas. We look forward to seeing you on 19 December to celebrate the opening. Please see the advertisements inside this publication for more information.
Held on Tuesday and Thursday from 6.30pm at the Balranald Pool.
Entry fee $2.00 per session.
Sessions will be held if the Balranald Central School notice board is 28°C or above at 4 pm.
If in doubt please ring the pool on 03 5020 1357. If the pool is closed, Bill will have left an automated message advising if aqua fitness is still being held.

On Wednesday 5 November, the General Manager and I travelled to Sydney to discuss the Closure of the Balranald Court house. We met with Mr Michael Talbot, the Assistant Director General and Ms Tijana Jovanovic. During discussions, Mr Talbot explained the reasoning behind a possible closure. However, he listened to the case put forward by Balranald Shire Council.
The General Manager and I then met with The Hon. Michael Veitch, Member of the Legislative Council who advised he would pose the question of the Balranald Court House closure during Question Time at Parliament. We are keeping our fingers crossed.
I attended a Interpretive Centre committee meeting on Thursday 6 November. The project manager advised the committee of the final steps towards completion and grand opening of the Discovery Centre complex, namely the landscaping and final fit out of the Interpretive Pavilion, Visitor Centre and Café. The grand opening of the Discovery Centre will take place on 19 December - I hope to see you there.
On Wednesday 12 November the General Manager and I attended the RAMROC (Riverina and Murray Regional Organisation of Councils) annual general meeting.
RAMROC represents the interests of eighteen Councils, being Albury, Balranald, Berrigan, Carrathool, Conargo, Corowa, Deniliquin, Greater Hume, Griffith, Hay, Jerilderie, Leeton, Murray, Murrumbidgee, Narrandera, Urana, Wakool and Wentworth to work collaboratively to enhance the economic, social and environmental capabilities of our communities so as to ensure the long term sustainability of our region.
It is heartening to read a media release from The Hon. Kevin Humphries MP, Minister for Natural Resources, Lands and Water for Western NSW and The Hon. John Williams MP, Member for Murray-Darling advising that NSW will not be supporting the proposal for the drying out of the Euston Lakes.
The NSW Government has listened to the local community and agreed that the proposal to periodically divert water from entering Dry Lake, Lake Benanee and Lake Caringay does not deliver the required triple bottom line (TBL) outcomes.
The TBL is an accounting framework incorporating three dimensions of performance: social, environmental and financial measures.

Fruit and vegetable growers in Australia are under constant threat from fruit fly. This pest is still in and around the Balranald Shire region and has the potential to destroy the multi-million dollar fruit export industry as well as
preventing home gardeners from enjoying the fruits of their labour.
You are responsible for ensuring you control fruit fly on your property.
To help protect our fruit and vegetable growing regions, pick up any fallen fruit immediately and dispose by placing in sealed plastic bags, leave it in the sun for at least 3 days to kill the larvae then put it in your bin for Council collection. Do not compost as fruit fly larvae can survive composting.
Pick ripe fruit as soon as possible and check it for fruit Fly larvae (maggots). You can also make a cheap, simple fruit fly trap - Mix one cup of 100% fruit juice (including pulp) with a tablespoon of cloudy ammonia, put into a 2Lt plastic bottle with a hole at the top to catch flies and hang it in a shady part of your fruit tree.

Rural Road Maintenance update
Council for the past four financial years has been fortunate to secure and spend $2.84M (Natural Disaster Recovery funding) to repair and restore our local roads in addition to our routine rural road maintenance budget.
The grant funds have come to an end. Council’s routine rural road maintenance budget for this year is only $520,000.
Council has spent 70% of these funds during the cooler months and can now only undertake repairs to dangerous sections of road until Autumn.
Council thanks all residents and the travelling public for their patience and understanding.
Sk8 progressing After years of community consultation, workshops and fundraising activities, Council is happy to announce that Stage one of the skate park project - Sk8 - has begun with the pouring of the slab on Friday 21 November. In consultation with the Sk8 committee, Balranald Inc. and Council, two quotes were received, with the total cost of the slab being $37,356. The Sk8 Park committee handed over a cheque for $7,702 to Council on Wednesday 19 November, and funds from Balranald Inc. (after securing a grant) will also be received along with other donations. Stage two of the project will consist of ramps to complete the skate park. Council are hopeful in sourcing further grant opportunities and donations to finish the project. All parties involved are excited to finally have the project on the ground, and look forward to seeing both local and visiting children and adults having fun and enjoying the facility.
