I use the word family, in a descriptive way, because you are now part of our family. We will do all within our power to make sure that your experiences at Salisbury University lead to the ultimate goal of completing your University education. Our family atmosphere is a constant source of support in your home away from home at Salisbury . The student organizations sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Services have established many traditions that have been supported over the years. The semester activities are their way of expressing to the student body the importance of communication between groups and the importance of being an involved student body with plans, goals and objectives to achieve. The success of all the student organizations showcased in this newsletter depends upon you, the student. It is not the officers of these organizations that will make them successful. It is your support of their programs and activities that will bring that success to fruition. Please be supportive of as many organizations as possible. Choose one in which to be active. But always remember that your support and involvement will make these organizations possible and continue to be a tradition at Salisbury University. Please have a successful year academically and socially. Sincerely, Vaughn P. White Vaughn P. White Director, Office of Multicultural Student Services

Roommate Survival

Do Unto Others: Treat your roommate in the same manner in which you desire to be treated. Respect: Mutual respect for belongings, privacy and the individual is necessary for a good relationship. Ground Rules: It may be a good idea for you and your roommate to set ground rules regarding study time, guests, etc. which will benefit you both. Confidentiality: If your roommate confides in you about a private matter, do not betray their trust. Cleanliness: If you eat from it, wash it. If you use it, put it away when you are finished. If you put it on the floor, pick it up. Communication: If you have problems with your roommate, talk it out. Remember, solutions to problems begin with good communication. Quality Hang Out Time: Plan to spend a little time with your roommate socially at least once a month. Perhaps set a regular time to hang out at the mall, go to the gym, go out to eat or catch a movie.

Getting to Know the Faculty

It is important to get acquainted with the University faculty, especially those with whom you are taking courses. Faculty members can provide invaluable infor-mation about meeting course require-ments and can provide information about college life in general. They also can help you gain insights about career opportuni-ties and clarify your career goals. Each member of the faculty is available during office hours. Faculty expect stu-dents to seek assistance from them dur-ing this time. Feel free to drop by or call during office hours. Your faculty advisor informs you about whether you are meeting academic re-quirements. It is imperative that you visit your advisor periodically. Obtain a copy of the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog for more information about faculty.
