Please consider the following policies and requirements before registering for an Early Childhood Recreation (ECR) class offered by the City of San José

Parents help to provide snack 1-2 times during the session, talk to instructor for details.

Non-registered children are not allowed in the class at any time. Please make arrange-ments for siblings on your participation day.

A birth certificate may be requested for age confirmations.

Participants must be toilet trained by first day of program. (with the exception of the Time for Tots class)

The City of San José, Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services provide recreational programs ONLY and not licensed childcare.

Class maximum is 20 or fewer. After reaching the capacity your child can be put on a waitlist. Teacher to child ratio is 1:10 or better.

PHONICS AND PRE-READING This class combines songs, writing, projects and stories. Kids will review letter sounds and learn simple word blending. This class is for children who know the majority of the alphabet and can write their name. Children must be potty trained by the first day of class. Parent participation varies at each center.

KINDERREADY Children will prepare for kindergarten with a higher focus on word recognition, reading prepar-edness, kinder level science and math concepts. Curriculum is specific to pre-kindergarten students who already have knowledge of the English alphabet and can count up to 30. In preparation for kindergarten, children will be eased into a more traditional Monday-Friday program, providing light homework and of course FUN! PRE-BALLET A first introduction to ballet - children learn basic ballet positions, steps and routines. They dance to a variety of ballet and age-appropriate music, use props and have lots of fun! TUMBLE BUGS - CHILD ONLY This class safely introduces basic gymnastics balances, rolls, springs and rotations while also developing a dance foundation. PIANO KEYBOARD Basic piano skills, music reading and theory are taught as well as rhythm and ear training. Regular access to a piano or keyboard is essential for progress. Level 1 is a class for stu-dents with no prior experience. Level 2 & up are for continuing students who have com-pleted the level 1 class. Students must bring headphones with a ¼” headphone adapter. DRUMMING FOR BEGINNERS Get your hands on a pair of sticks and drum away! This drumming course is designed for beginners, and focuses on developing effective hand technique and precision. VIDEO GAME DESIGN Participants in this class will learn how to design the concept and elements of basic, 2-dimensional computer/video games. YOUNG STORYTELLERS - THE BASICS Nourish your child’s imagination in this beginning basics class for young storytellers. Stu-dents will learn methods to overcome writer’s block and start writing their own original stories and poems. At the end of the session, each student’s best work will be published in an anthology available for purchase. All instructors are published authors with experience teaching. KIDZ LOVE SOCCER Players will learn dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting, age-specific defense, etc. Fun skill games are played at every session and every participant will have a ball at his or her feet. ADULT TENNIS Beginning - Tennis has never been easier to play and learn. By using NEW progression tennis balls and a progressive games-based approach to learning you will be able to learn the skills necessary to rally the ball in the first hour of the very first class. Class is located at Fowler Creek Park. Intermediate - Previous tennis experience is required. The lessons are fast-paced, covering all the fundamentals in hitting, movement, and strategy. Learn how to shape the ball and improve your consistency. Class is located at Fowler Creek Park or Evergreen Valley College.

KARATE (KENPO) Learn a beginning form of martial arts that promotes respect, self esteem, leadership and self-confidence. This class teaches the techniques of kicking, punching, blocking, striking and self-defense. Karate uniforms not required, but are available through the instructor. Classes are taught by highly-qualified instructors with 2nd-5th degree Black Belts. Students are required to take our Karate Kenpo Level 1 class before registering for our Level 2/3 class. HIKING DAY TRIP Join us for a Local Adventure! We will visit Alum Rock Park on 4/27/13 and 5/4/13 for moderately strenuous hikes during this series. Have fun with the group and build your fitness level for longer hikes later in the summer! You will be guided through the park and learn about the park history and highlights. Hikes will be about 2 hours long. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, bring your own water and food. Registration fees cover transportation to the park and a guide.
