Please consider the following policies and requirements before registering for an Early Childhood Recreation (ECR) class offered by the City of San José

Parents help to provide snack 1-2 times during the session, talk to instructor for details.

Non-registered children are not allowed in the class at any time. Please make arrange-ments for siblings on your participation day.

A birth certificate may be requested for age confirmations.

Participants must be toilet trained by first day of program. (with the exception of the Time for Tots class)

The City of San José, Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services provide recreational programs ONLY and not licensed childcare.

Class maximum is 20 or fewer. After reaching the capacity your child can be put on a waitlist. Teacher to child ratio is 1:10 or better.

PHONICS AND PRE-READING This class combines songs, writing, projects and stories. Kids will review letter sounds and learn simple word blending. KINDERREADY Children will prepare for kindergarten with a higher focus on word recognition, reading prepar-edness, kinder level science and math concepts. Curriculum is specific to pre-kindergarten students who already have knowledge of the English alphabet and can count up to 30. PIANO KEYBOARD Basic piano skills, music reading and theory are taught as well as rhythm and ear training. Regular access to a piano or keyboard is essential for progress. Level 1 is a class for stu-dents with no prior experience. Level 2 & up are for continuing students who have com-pleted the level 1 class. Students must bring headphones with a ¼” headphone adapter. YOUNG STORYTELLERS - THE BASICS Nourish your child’s imagination in this beginning basics class for young storytellers. ADULT TENNIS Beginning - Tennis has never been easier to play and learn. By using NEW progression tennis balls and a progressive games-based approach to learning you will be able to learn the skills necessary to rally the ball in the first hour of the very first class. Class is located at Fowler Creek Park. Intermediate - Previous tennis experience is required. The lessons are fast-paced, covering all the fundamentals in hitting, movement, and strategy. KARATE (KENPO) Learn a beginning form of martial arts that promotes respect, self esteem, leadership and self-confidence. This class teaches the techniques of kicking, punching, blocking, striking and self-defense. Karate uniforms not required, but are available through the instructor. Classes are taught by highly-qualified instructors with 2nd-5th degree Black Belts. Students are required to take our Karate Kenpo Level 1 class before registering for our Level 2/3 class. Participants may enter themselves into one of three categories: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced, with an instructor for each level. The instruc-tor will teach and demonstrate tricks that participants can use to help them progress to the next level. The lessons and instructions taught can be practiced at the participant's own pace and ability, even after the lessons are completed.
