Dear Friends,

We are overjoyed to be celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House—the first Ronald McDonald House in the world—and we invite you to join us at our celebration gala on September 28 at Legacy.

In 1974, Dr. Audrey Evans and Jimmy Murray co-founded the Ronald McDonald House with a simple but meaningful vision: to create a home away from home for families of seriously ill children. That vision has now spread across the world, with over 365 Houses in 43 countries and regions.

Every family that has stayed at our Houses over the years has had a distinct journey involving doctors, nurses, relatives, and friends, along with numerous challenges. We know that to overcome those challenges, every moment counts—every welcome, every night, every smile, and every memory. At the gala, we will reflect on family stories and spotlight those caregivers who do everything possible to help seriously ill children.

Your involvement in our 45th Anniversary Celebration will help us continue welcoming families and making sure every moment at the House provides them with the comfort and hope that they need. With the opening of the new Jill and Alan B. Miller tower, we will be more than doubling our capacity at our Chestnut Street House, making your support more vital than ever.

Many meaningful moments are yet to come: delicious meals in our brand new kitchen; welcoming smiles at our new reception area; convenient rides to the hospital; and comfortable rest in a warm bed in a beautiful new room. With your support, you can be a part of every special moment at the House, and help create memories that will stay with our families forever.

On behalf of all of the families who have called our Houses their home since 1974, and the many more families who will come through our doors in the years to come, I extend our deepest gratitude.

Warmly,

Susan Campbell, CEO

Every Moment Counts—Every welcome, Every night, Every smile, Every memory.

At the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, we are thrilled to celebrate 45 years of providing a community of comfort and hope to families of seriously ill children. We know that every family that has walked through our doors over the years has their own journey and we know that every moment counts: whether it’s a visit with the doctors and nurses who have provided the best possible medical treatment; one of the many nights parents and caregivers spend encouraging their children; sitting down to a warm meal served with love by one of our guest chef groups; or seeing a smile from a welcoming volunteer after a long day at the hospital.

As part of our 45th Anniversary Celebration, we will be highlighting stories from families who have stayed with us throughout the years. We will also recognize children’s caregivers—including doctors and nurses—who have gone above and beyond every step of the way to help these families.

DR. AUDREY E. EVANS AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

The Dr. Audrey E. Evans Award of Excellence recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the health and well-being of children.

Dr. Evans has dedicated her career to helping treat children with cancer. In the medical community, she is known as a pioneer in the clinical study and treatment of childhood cancers and she built a world-renowned pediatric cancer program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She is a co-founder of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, and it was her dream and determination that led to the inception of the very first Ronald McDonald House here in Philadelphia in 1974.

Madeline Bell is the President and CEO of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), one of the top-ranked children’s hospitals in the United States. A bold and visionary leader, Ms. Bell champions change with empathy and integrity, inspiring the nearly 16,000 employees in the hospital’s $2.8-billion-a-year health system and research institute to create breakthroughs that have worldwide impact.

Ms. Bell began her career as a pediatric nurse at CHOP in 1983, later leaving the organization to move into hospital administration. She returned to CHOP in 1995, and has since held a number of leadership positions, advancing from Vice President to Senior Vice President to Executive Vice President to Chief Operating Officer. In 2015, she assumed the title of President and CEO.

Ms. Bell has made numerous contributions to CHOP, including the development of one of the largest pediatric ambulatory care networks in the country, the expansion of the hospital’s 4-million-square-foot campus, and the development of many nationally recognized clinical care programs. She has also secured many philanthropic gifts to help further the institution’s mission.

Ms. Bell serves on the Board of Directors for Comcast NBCU, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, the Children’s Hospital Association, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee, the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, and Solutions for Patient Safety. She is also an adviser to numerous international hospitals and frequently lectures on the topics of children’s healthcare and women in leadership. She received The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Industry Icon Award in 2017, and was named one of Modern Healthcare’s “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” (2017 and 2018) and one of its “Top 25 Women Leaders” (2019). She was also included on WomenInc.’s 2018 list of “Most Influential Corporate Directors.”

Ms. Bell is the author of the blog Heels of Success (heelsofsuccess.com), which offers guidance to women on how to elevate themselves in the workplace, and the host of Breaking Through with Madeline Bell, a podcast that features interviews with CHOP doctors and scientists, as well as philanthropists, innovators, and business and civic leaders. She holds a bachelor of science in Nursing from Villanova University and a master of science in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania.

JIMMY MURRAY COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Jimmy Murray Community Leadership Award honors individuals who are committed to substantially improving the lives of families and their children through their community involvement.

Jimmy Murray co-founded the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House and was instrumental in the opening of several Ronald McDonald Houses near pediatric hospitals across the United States and around the world. Fran DunphyFormer Basketball Head Coach

Temple University

Francis J. Dunphy has been a part of collegiate basketball for six decades. He started as a student-athlete playing basketball for La Salle University, co-captaining the team his senior year. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1970, and his first coaching position was as an enlisted assistant coach at the United States Military Academy. From 1975-79, he served as an accounting teacher, guidance counselor and head basketball coach at his high school alma mater, Malvern Preparatory School. In 1979, he was named assistant coach at La Salle, and one year later he joined the coaching staff at American University.

He returned to La Salle in 1985 until 1988 when he went to the University of Pennsylvania. In 1989, he was named head coach at Penn, where he led the team to 10 Ivy League titles in his 17 years there. In 2006, Dunphy became the first person to serve as a head basketball coach at two Philadelphia Big 5 institutions when he was named head coach at Temple University, succeeding Hall of Fame coach John Chaney. Dunphy, known as “Mr. Big 5”, has worked at or attended four of the Big 5 schools. At Temple, Dunphy had a successful tenure, including being named Big 5 Coach of the Year in five of his 13 seasons and Conference Coach of the Year four times. In 2018, he was awarded the national Dean Smith Award. In 2019, he won the Temple University honors Professor of the Year and received an honorary degree from Temple and the Gene Bartow Award. A beloved professor in the Fox School of Business for the past 12 years, Dunphy has co-taught an honors course entitled Management, Theory & Practice: From the Locker Room to the Board Room, in which he teaches students the importance of management skills and integrity.

One of the winningest coaches in the NCAA Division 1 with more than 500 victories, he has coached eight Conference Players of the Year, three Conference Rookies of the Year, 58 All- Conference honorees and five perfect Conference seasons. During his career, his teams made 19 postseason appearances, including 17 NCAA Tournament berths and 2 NIT Tournament berths, and won three Atlantic 10 Tournament Championships.

Dunphy is the heart of Philadelphia basketball and has always impressed upon his players the importance of being successful both in the classroom and on the court and to be engaged and committed to their community. He models his message—as a native son of Philadelphia, he is deeply committed to serving his community and is a leader for Coaches vs. Cancer of Philadelphia, as well as a member of their National Council. He serves on the boards of the Elwyn Institute and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Philadelphia. Both in basketball and in life, Dunphy is an icon of good citizenship and leadership. In 2019 he received the John Wanamaker Athletic Award, given to those who have done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the sport in which they excel.
