COAL CREEK CANYON CLEAN- UP SCHEDULED FOR SEPT. 7TH Mark your calendar for the Fall Canyon Clean Up! The Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association is sponsoring COAL CREEK CANYON FALL CLEAN UP ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2019. We are official members of the CDOT Adopt A Highway program and will be removing trash from the right-of-way along Hwy 72 - milepost 13 to 22. (Railroad underpass to Wondervu) Side roads are OK too! Volunteers meet at the Coal Creek Canyon Community Center, 31528 Hwy 72, between 8am-9am for orange trash bags and safety vests. You will be assigned a one-mile section of the highway to clean with another person. If you’re unavailable on Saturday, but would like to clean up your favorite stretch of roadside before CDOT makes their pick up after the weekend – please call Tom at 303-642-7121 for bags and vests and to get an assignment. CDOT asks that each participant view a Safety Video and a Meth Lab Waste Recognition Video prior to cleanup activities. The video can be viewed from your computer at: https://www.codot.gov/programs/adopt-a-highway/videos.html or at the community center before we start on Saturday.

It has been a busy summer on Highway 72 with the construction and drivers have tossed a lot of trash out their vehicle windows. So we need a good group of volunteers that are proud of our ‘special’ canyon and are willing to come out and help clean it up again. All of your efforts are especially appreciated by the CCCIA, CDOT, Jeffco Road & Bridge, and most of the residents up here. So come join us and show your pride!Thank you!Tom Mulvany (303-642-7121)Coordinator- Canyon Clean UpCCCIA

Thank you Blood Donors! I want to thank everyone who came out to donate blood during the CCCIA’s 6th annual blood drive with Bonfils/Vitalant. Every year I’m impressed and amazed by this community’s generosity when it comes to this event. Each year so far, we’ve broken our record from the previous year’s drive for number of units collected, and this year was no exception. All 20 of our donation times were booked, and we collected a total of 18 units. Our site coordinator at Vitalant tells me this is exceptional, and the team lead mentioned to me they had a drive in downtown Boulder last month that resulted in a lot less interest and far fewer donations. Especially considering that we’re a small, out-of-the way

Here’s To Your Health…Back To School Immunity!

By Dr. Brandy Victory

Here we are in “back to school” season and I know many of my moms are concerned about protecting their children and families from the onslaught of germs their kids will be breathing and touching daily.A successful school year requires a strong immune system. The great thing is there are many ways to support immunity throughout the school year. Your kids will benefit from a strong nutritional foundation to keep their immune systems in good working order. Prevention is Key!Kids are adjusting to new classrooms, new teachers and new friends which can be stressful in many ways and taxing on the immune system, so be sure to support their tiny bodies with the best nutrition you possibly can.For starters, I recommend fish oil to my patients on a regular basis, as they have been shown to support immune cell func-tion as well as neurological function. This can be used as an ongoing supplement throughout the year.Probiotics are another foundational supplement. We often think of gut health when we think of probiotics, but research also shows that probiotics support immune function as well. In a 2018 double-blind, randomized prospective trial pub-

lished in the journal Synthetic Systems Biotechnology, probi-otics helped specifically support upper respiratory tract func-tion compared to placebo. The microbiome has an important role in digestion, absorption and assimilation of nutrients, helping kids get the most out of the food they consume. They also help build neurotransmitters in the gut so their brain and body works at its best. Why not Bio-hack your children so they have the best chance at success?Research also shows that vitamins A, C and D3 can help sup-port innate and adaptive immunity. Zinc is also an important nutrient for immune system support. According to a 2017 review published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, zinc homeostasis is necessary for the immune sys-tem to function properly.

In addition to these foundational nutrients, many botani-cals have been shown to support immune function for kids including astragalus, curcumin, elderberry and mushrooms (maitake, shiitake, lion’s mane, and turkey tail).*When preparing for back to school, consider these three key lifestyle areas:1. Sleep—Getting enough sleep is critical for the immune system. It is recommended that school-age children get nine hours of sleep each night. It is also when their brains detox and their bodies repair. Stop screen time at least 2 hours prior to bed for best sleep. 2. Nutrition—A colorful diet that features lots of fresh vegetables and fruits, avoiding processed and “fast” foods is better for the immune system. Pick a variety of colors to put on their plates and as much as possible give them foods from nature, not from a package or a drive through. 3. Physical activity—Exercise has been shown to support immunity and is good for a kid’s body, mind and emotional health. Be sure your child is moving their bodies. Limit TV and screen time and get them into nature.Preparing for the back to school adventure is a bigger deal for kids than we might realize. As their parent it is vital you are taking action to help them become the best they can be, and following these tips is a great place to start. If you’d like 35% off high-quality supplements for your child, you are welcomed to visit my new online supplement

store! I am offering a 35% discount as a thank you for being a customer to my new store, which I will extend through September 15th, just for you. I have created a Back to School protocol so that it is easy for you to get exactly what you need to support your children. Feel free to shop around if you don’t see what you are look-ing for in the pre-built protocol section. Or if you’d like me to email you the protocol call or email to let us know.Use this link:https://wellevate.me/brandy-victoryMay your back to school journey be graceful, joyful and healthy.Sincerely,Dr. Brandy Victorywww.DrBrandyVictory.comadmin@drbrandyvictory.com303-619-7766

Moose were seen in the aspens, on Aspen Lane of course. They were also on Indian Peak Rd. Later, one was on Debra Ann, one on Katie Lane, and a mom moose with a calf was just off Hwy. 72 east of Hwy. 119. Perhaps the same one with a calf actually charged a man in Pinecliffe two weeks later. Cow Moose with young can be dangerous.Foxes were making lots of noise on Spruce Canyon Circle. Foxes were seen on lower Rudi Lane and on Divide View. The Black color phase fox with a white tail was in Wondervu, sometimes with a red color phase fox - different colors, same species. Coyotes were also yipping on Spruce Canyon Circle, and Coyotes with young were on Warren’s Rd. A Mule Deer crossing Hwy. 72, gave drivers quite a shock, even though we all know deer might appear at any moment, in any place. The Elk have come up to the high country for the summer and seem to be hanging near homes more than usual. This may be because grasses are invading wildflower areas as the climate warms. One Elk was grazing on Warren’s Rd. another on Chute Rd. A Mountain Lion from the Front Range Mountain Lion Study, known by the collar s/he wears, was on Camp Eden and one with no collar was on Tunnel 19 Rd. Lions making

Black Bear season is still in full swing and will be for about three more months. Advice out there to keep ground level windows shut and locked is just not realistic when temperatures are high. Nail boards, actually screws through a board, remain a good option and directions can be found online. That break-in bear on Coal Creek Heights that was relocated returned and was in the kitchen - again! Another example of relocation not working. Also, elsewhere in the canyon, the insides of a truck were destroyed and that is a situation where nail boards could hardly be used. Perhaps that is the same bear that tried to break into a truck on Ranch Elsie, and was also seen on Janelle Circle. A big black bear was reported in Colorado Sierra, and a bear was seen on lower Coal Creek Heights Drive. Another was seen walking the trail near our K-8 School. Still more bear reports were from Aspen Lane, lower Rudi Lane, and Wondervu. That cinnamon colored bear was seen at a house on Hwy. 72 near Carl’s Corner. Trail cameras noted a bear on Katie Lane and in the Rudi Lane/Copperdate area caught a bear just walking along a railing like a tight rope artist.

that chirping sound were heard at Ranch Elsie/Burland, and also near K-8 School. So much for the usual large mammals. Who needs Raccoon coming in a doggie door? Well, It happened. Chipmunks, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrels also take advantage of any little opening and will be in the house. It’s really hard to always protect our “territories”!Call Jan (303-642-0926) with any wildlife questions or sightings, post on Coal Creek Speak, or on Coal Creek Canyon Wildlife Facebook group. Here’s Chris! There continued to be a lot of hummingbird reports over the past month with great pictures and several videos. One of those videos showed more little beauties than one could even count and another caught a hummer in torpor! Late July brought the Broad-tailed Hummingbird babies to the feeders and the Rufous Hummingbirds have consistently been reported as being feisty and mean and one orange fellow was caught in a photo winking at the camera! A few Calliope Hummingbirds were also seen. There were several additional reports of Cordilleran Flycatchers and just darling videos of their adorable little babies in the nest. Western Tanagers were frequent visitors coming to eat oranges and jelly and a late fledgling was seen in early August being fed by a female this time! The young woodpeckers started to figure out how to eat on their own, but one male Hairy Woodpecker fledgling sat at a

feeder begging the Mountain Chickadees for food when his parents no longer wanted to provide his meals. There were quite a few reports of Red Crossbills at feeders, in the street potentially eating road salt and several flocks of 20-30 were seen flying over. It was so great to continue to receive reports of at least two families of Great-horned Owl fledglings. These owls were photographed sitting in trees and one looked like a wood carving roosting on a stump. Some odd spots to see owls included two on an antenna taking baths in the rain and on a street sign. Both young and adult owls were heard calling throughout the canyon. A Red-tailed Hawk pair, who were potentially nesting, dive bombed a poor little Shih Tzu. One canyon resident setup a dash cam at their feeder and captured a great video of Western Tanagers, Pine Siskins, Mountain Chickadees and a White-Breasted Nuthatch! Single Wild Turkeys were seen as were groups of hens with various sized poults. Some odd looking Dark-Eyed Juncos (maybe molting or partially luecistic) were photographed. Other reports included Brown Creeper, Northern Flicker, American Crow, Cooper’s Hawk, Red-breasted Nuthatch, a Great Blue Heron in the open space and eight Band-tailed Pigeons showed up for breakfast at a feeder. Evening Grosbeaks were seen mid-August which may mean summer will be coming to an end soon. I encourage you to seek help from a doctor if you have been experiencing these behaviors for more than six months. Sometimes stress or bereavement can also cause these types of behaviors, but they are usually temporary. I also encourage you to seek help from an attorney who deals in elder law so they may prepare powers of attorney and other estate planning documents so you have help when you need it and your wishes are in writing. I have many clients who come to see me after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Sometimes they wait years after the diagnoses before they seek help, and oftentimes it is too late to help them because they cannot understand legal concepts. Do not be embarrassed about this diagnosis; take control and address the situation immediately after diagnosis, if not before.

EARLY ALZHEIMER’S CLUESBy Tamra K Waltemath

Changes in behavior or personality may be the first signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s. Memory loss is not the only sign of dementia; losing interest in your favorite activities or getting unusually anxious, aggressive or suspicious may also be symptoms.Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia affecting more than 5 million people in the U.S. It gradually leads to memory loss as well as the inability to think and reason. Many people with dementia experience other symptoms too, like depression or “sun downing” which is an agitation that happens at the end of the day. Some people feel anxiety about once routine events, they lose impulse control, ignore social norms and lose interest in food and become apathetic. There are medications to help with dementia, but you must be willing to accept the diagnosis to get help, which is difficult for most people.Below is a behavior checklist which may indicate Alzheimer’s or other dementia1 :

Has the person lost interest in friends, family or home • activities?Has the person become less spontaneous and active?• Does the person view themselves as a burden to family?• Has the person become more anxious or worried about • things that are routine?Does the person feel tense or shaky or show symptoms • of panic?Has the person become agitated, aggressive, irritable or • temperamental?

The Six Best DoctorsBy, Rodger Ruge, Human Potential Institute Life Coach

“The art of healing comes from nature and not from the physician”.Paracelsus

The Sunshine DoctorThese days we are solar-phobes, fearing the sun’s potential for developing skin cancer. For sure your genetics, skin tone, dose and timing play a critical role here for safe sun exposure, so do your homework. That said, getting direct sun to skin exposure has a host of health benefits, including the production of Vitamin D, lowering of blood pressure, increasing cognitive function, reducing symptoms of depression, sleep improvement, healing certain skin disorders, boosting growth in children, and enhancing the immune system. Experts recommend 15 to 20 minutes of direct sunlight daily, for a healthy adult. Mid-day exposure should be avoided when the sun is at its peak.

The Water DoctorMost of us are not at optimal hydration, which literally effects all aspects of physiological and cognitive function. You are approximately 70% water and you can only live a few days without hydration, which plays a crucial role in elimination of toxins from the body. Living at our elevations

means we have higher demands for hydration, especially during winter. When you can see your breath leaving the body, that’s water vapor friends. So how much is enough? A good rule of thumb is to drink half your bodyweight in ounces. For example, a 200-pound person would drink 100 ounces of water daily. I know, you will have to pee more…that’s good, its poison being eliminating from the body.

The Air DoctorWe are truly blessed to live in our clean, mountain air which makes getting outside a few times a day for some deep breathing is easy breezy! To enhance this, take full, belly breaths to inflate all 5 lobes of the lungs. Most of us breath too shallow, only inflating the upper chambers, but to remove toxins, reduce blood pressure, improve brain function and oxygenate your cells, filing your lungs to capacity as often as possible is the key. Don’t’ do this too fast, hyperventilation will get lightheaded and can even cause you to pass out, so just pace yourself and notice how good you feel after just a couple of minutes of deep, full diaphragmatic breathing.

The Exercise DoctorBy now we all know exercise is critical for optimal health. The question I always get centers around what form is best. Are you ready for this? Move your body anyway you want. Going for a brisk walk, a bike ride, a swim, gardening, doing yoga, Tai Chi, strength training, running…it really does not matter from a general perspective…20 to 30 minutes a day

consistently will do wonders for all aspects of your health and wellness.

The Rest DoctorProper sleep perhaps has the greatest impact on our health, longevity and disease prevention. It turns out it is not the amount of sleep you get, rather the quality of sleep. For most people 6.5 hours of deep, restorative sleep is outstanding. Some folks need more, some less, but the old information about everyone needing 8-hours of sleep is a myth for most people. To improve sleep, try these simple techniques;

Completely black out the room, zero light.• No caffeine 8 hours prior to sleep.• No food 3 hours prior to sleep, and skip desert. • Remove all electronics from the bedroom.• No screen watching 2 hours prior to sleep (yes, this • means your TV & Phone). Read a book in bed prior to sleep.•

The Diet DoctorThese days it’s this fad or that fad. There is no ‘diet’ that works long-term, so what it really comes down to lifestyle. Let’s make this really easy; eat the bulk of your food from nature. Choose organic, local sources when possible. If you eat meat, go for pasture raised, free range, grass-fed, from small farms with ethical animal welfare practices. Eliminate as much processed food as you can manage and dramatically reduce sugar which is found in virtually all processed foods. Get good at reading labels, there are a ton of resources to help you navigate the outright fraud you find in labeling practices.

These six practices will produce amazing results in your mental and physical health, and it is so simple to make these adjustments. If you want clarification on anything, reach out anytime.

EARTHWATCHPerils of a Plastic Bottle by Jody Dickson

Plastic single-use water bottles are SO convenient and can be found everywhere! Unfortunately, that same ‘everywhere’ is contributing to the plastic waste that is contaminating and overrunning our planet! 38 billion water bottles (2 million tons) end up in US landfills each year. Plastic bottles are the 5th most commonly found trash item by quantity during cleanup efforts. The waste generated by the use of these plastic bottles, though, isn’t the only environmental impact. For each plastic bottle, it takes three times the amount of water in a bottle of water to make the bottle. It also takes the equivalent of a ¼ of the bottle of oil just to make the bottle. Making the bottles to meet the demand in the US takes enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. Bottling water release 2.5 million tons of CO2 in the atmosphere every year.

EarthWatch Continued from page 13Yes the bottles are recyclable, but on average just over 22% of bottles do get recycled. Those bottles that don’t go to the landfill often end up in the ocean or other habitats, threatening the wellbeing of the wildlife that live there. Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 mammals die from ingesting plastic every year. It can take up to 1000 years for a plastic bottle to degrade. They will always remain on Earth as plastic. They only break down into smaller ‘microplastic’ pieces. For all of these reasons, when I travel now, I challenge myself to only utilize one disposable plastic bottle per trip. I make rare exceptions because staying hydrated and healthy is sometimes more important than declining water because it is in a plastic water bottle. My rule is almost a challenge for me as it does make me more selective. When a water bottle is offered to me, I do evaluate if I want this bottle to be “the one”! It is also a big change for me, because I used to only drink bottled water when I traveled since tap water can be very different from place to place. Let’s reduce this plastic water bottle consumption and use reusable bottles as a rule! --------------------------------------------------------------------------We are watching… … a super fun YouTube channel called SciShow Space. Remember that grand reunion at the CCCIA Community Hall in the Summer of 2017?! So many canyonites, past and present, enjoyed a beautiful day reconnecting with old friends and catching up. You might recognize some of the smiling faces below if you were there with us!

Now it’s time to do this again! We would like to have input from anyone who is interested in attending regarding the date we choose for the summer of 2020.

A small group of CCC CANOE (Coal Creek Canyon Community and Alumni Nurturing Our Eagles) volunteers have already begun the initial planning and organization. We are looking at all Saturdays next summer with the exception of July 4th (Independence Day) and July 28th (Golden’s Buffalo Bill Days). We are hoping to hear which dates are the best for many of you and which ones would be problematic. There are a few ways in which you can share your preferences with our planning committee:

(1) You can submit your preferences in the group poll posted at the top of our FaceBook group. The link to our group’s page and the poll is:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/CANOE.CoalCreek/ (2) You can email your input to:

Heather Castle Ward at: [email protected] or to Ruth Rodgers at: [email protected]

(3) You can mail your input to: CCC CANOE, c/o Ruth Rodgers, 7657 Quay St., Arvada, CO 80003.

However you do it, we just want your input! Last time, in 2017, while we definitely missed those who could not attend, we had a tremendously successful and fun day and even enjoyed several who traveled from quite a distance: Becky Rodgers Johnson (Thailand); Jeanne Abrew (Florida), Marilyn Butcher (Texas); Harriet Iwakiri See (Illinois), Dan Butcher (Texas), and Joyce Powell Sturgeon (Oklahoma), among others. We hope to get this 2020 date set and advertised quite early so that many individuals can hopefully plan their canyon/family visits at the same time that many other canyonites with be getting together, reconnecting, and having fun!

CREATION OR EVOLUTION? By Claude Thoemke

Men have asked the question a long time ago, “how did life start on Earth?” There have been a few theories that scientists have thought to be the answer. Most well know is Charles Darwin, 1809-1882, and others, stating that all species or organisms arise and develop through natural selection of small inherited variations that increase the individual’s ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. Secondly, the Big Bang Theory. In 1225 English Theologian Robert Grosseteste and others explored the nature of matter and the cosmos. He says “The birth of the Universe as an explosion is a crystallization of matter to form stars and planets. Albert Einstine, Edwin Hubble, Lemasture and others have researched this theory. Others say lightening sparks to generate amino acids and sugar with water, methane and hydrogen. Still others say molecules of life met on clay, organizing their selves. OR, ice may have covered the oceans causing key reactions. OR, could life on Earth come from another star solar system? OR, life may have evolved before Earth finished forming. SO, as you can see there are many ideas or theories, and many from so long ago when the “learned” scholars didn’t know as much about Science. You know me, I don’t believe in any of the theories of Man. I believe in the Biblical account of God’s Creation. Let me explain why I believe what I do. GENESIS 1:1 - In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. God is eternal forever in the past and forever in the future. VERSE 2 - God created the Sun, as He created the Earth and located it in the exact right distance from the Sun. Any change in that distance we would be scorching hot or to cold. With out the Sun we could not have life on Earth. The Sun is about 20,000 degrees. (God must keep paying the bill to keep it burning so constant ) God knew we needed time to work and sleep, so He has the earth rotate once every 24 hrs. Very Intelligent Design. VERSE 6 - God separated the waters from the Earth and

the sky above. Some fresh water lakes and rivers and the oceans with salt water, both different with a purpose. VERSE 11 - God had the land produce vegetation bearing fruit ACCORDING TO THE VARIOUS KINDS. VERSE 16 - God also created the stars and the moon. The moon regulate the tides of the ocean and other things. VERSE 20 - God created the great and small creatures that live in the seas, and the birds that fly above, both fish and birds ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND. VERSE 24 - And God said “Let the land produce living creatures ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND: Livestock, creatures that move above the ground and wild animals, EACH ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND. I emphasize according the their kind because the evolutionist teach everything came from a single glob of life. It would be impossible for that to happen with the DNA being so different between a fish, bird, or animals. Because of God’s intelligent design, all animals have lungs to breath air, a heart to provide nutrients through the blood stream. Many more aspects to numerous to mention, to create and maintain life. GENESIS 2:7 - The Lord God formed Man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the Man became a living being. Can we trust and believe in God? In His word? 2 TIMOTHY 3: 16 - says “All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correction and training in righteousness.” There have been over a hundred prophecies in the Bible that have come to be, specifically as foretold. The birth of Jesus from virgin Mary being one big example. ISAIAH 7: 14 - Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel (meaning GOD WITH US). Yes, we can trust God and His word. If it takes a little faith to believe in Creationism, it would take huge amount of faith to believe in Evolutionism. God bless you all dear readers. This may be my last article if my cancer gets aggressive to fast. Claude Thoemke, Deacon, Chapel In The Hills, [email protected], 303-642-3285

Habits habits habits. Getting near 70 years old. They always say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Recently did see a statement. It said “teaching an old dog new tricks isn’t impossible but is uncommon.” I thought hmmm…. a new approach. (I should mention that was on the side of a dog food biscuit box). I, myself, am an advocate of habits. Having them. Changing them, making new ones, getting rid of old ones. As an old dog? I know how hard it is to change! I remember back when I was young and I kinda arrogantly thought I would always be open-minded and willing to consider change. That is proving totally wrong. At least for me and those I interact with. As always, I remind you who read this that I also write it to remind myself of better ways to behave, and share our life experiences with those we care about. Heck, even those we might not really care about, but have to “deal with” in our life journey. It is really best to get along with other human beings. If you are conscious you have to be aware that it would be nice if we can get along. Right? Don’t need to expound on why I think it is something important. Again, are you conscious??Although that “do unto others as you would have them do unto you:” IS for ALL ages, I often direct this column at the babyboomers in particular. Since I am one of them. You think you are going crazy (crazier?)as you get into (and out of) your 60’s. It seems to be all of our peers are the same. We have to take everything our cohorts do with a grain of salt. Give the benefit of a doubt. Our minds are starting to show effects of over 60 years of thinking…

And watch out 70’s! (No offense 70 somethings) It certainly seems possible the 70s could be more interesting (is that the word?) than the darn 60s. Because IF we get to 70 we will undoubtedly have new health issues and also if we are lucky have some amazing experiences, too!!IF you want to enjoy your life, especially this ending part? You are going to find it necessary to maintain certain habits: especially healthful habits. Here’s a reminder to those under 55, all the way to young adults. You need to prepare yourself everyday to live well enough to end up with a body and mind that can carry you into the future. THE SOONER YOU MAKE GOOD HEALTH HABITS THE BETTER. And also: IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO START taking better care of yourself. I harp on good health here constantly. It’s the number one thing YOU CAN CONTROL most of the time (unless you get an un-requested health issue). (then that is a life challenge!!)I try to bring humor to our lives. I try to bring some common sense (things our mothers told us). I try to point out common mistakes we all make. I try to offer counsel as a wise old woman… sort of wise, my husband is the wise _ _ _. Tee hee. Between the two of us the wisdom flies around here and can be amusing. Or cause subjects of debate. Never dull when you continue to communicate. When you hope you can convince someone else to change. Habits. They are also the things that drive a partnership off the rails sometimes. One says: I have been doing it this way all my life. I will NOT change. Come on. I have known myself to say that before, too. If you are trying to “get along” with others? THAT attitude of NEVER changing will not endear you to anyone. You probably won’t even really LIKE yourself if

you always stick to your guns about NOT changing. It can be done. As the first paragraph mentioned. Not impossible, maybe uncommon. So….? go for uncommon. MAKE A CHANGE that betters your life and your partnership. IF you are going for a long term relationship? You need to adapt. You need to be rational and talk to the person you need to hear you. Again, rational. Write it down. Turn it over in your head. Think about putting yourself in another’s shoes: how do you react to requests for change? Our world IS changing. We can’t really control that. We need to work on changing what we can in our world to make it better for ourselves. Try to find some humor and joy in each day. TRY to laugh at yourself more. Lighten up. Make one small change! That one sentence: Change is a constant. Goofy, but absolutely true. Do not think you can stop change. That is a recipe for sadness. Our best defense against the depression that comes when you cannot accept change? Is a good offense. Same as in all life activities. What I constantly do preach about: LOVE. It is the opening door and what we are all here for. Love yourself and others with all your heart. Peace.

If You’re Considering Hiring a Household Employee – Make Sure You Understand the Rules

By Karen Schwimmer, CPA, EA

Hiring a nanny, senior caregiver, housekeeper or personal assistant may be a necessity for many families today, but

before you make that decision it is important to understand all the requirements. What seems like a simple solution can turn into a costly nightmare at tax time or expose you to legal action. There have been several recent regulatory changes that affect how you hire and pay for in-home care, and when you are subject to minimum wage and overtime rules. The Department of Labor (DOL) recently repealed the wage & hour law exemptions for third-party caregivers working through agencies. This means that these caregivers can no-longer be classified as “companions” or “live-ins” to avoid paying minimum wage or overtime expenses. Agencies that provide these caregivers are now forced to choose between paying higher hourly rates or sending multiple caregivers to homes requiring high hour care. Families that provide direct employment are still able to use these exemptions to avoid or limit overtime costs. How you classify and pay that provider has also come under scrutiny lately. The DOL and IRS agree that virtually all domestic workers, are employees, not contractors. Worker misclassification is considered felony tax evasion and the IRS is expanding enforcement of this area. Because agencies are subject to minimum wage and overtime restrictions, they are moving towards a referral-based system to place qualified providers with families. This means the families are now the employer and must meet applicable regulations or face penalties. These obligations are explained in IRS Publication 926 – Household Employer’s Tax Guide. Per Publication 926, if you pay any individual more than $2,100 in a calendar year, you are required to:

Household Employee Continued from page 23Withhold FICA taxes of 7.65 from the employee’s 1. pay. This is the employee’s portion of Social Security and Medicare.Pay employer taxes including employer FICA of 2. 7.65%, and Federal and State Unemployment. Remit employer and employee payroll taxes 3. throughout the year and report tax liability on your personal tax return. Household employers do not use the normal quarterly reporting system for employees. Provide employee with a W-2 at year end and file 4. year end reports W-3 and W-2A with Social Security.

In addition to collecting, paying and reporting FICA payroll taxes and unemployment, household employers are expected to treat the relationship as a formal employer-employee one and provide a written employment agreement, detailed pay stubs, meet the minimum wage and overtime rules, provide Worker’s Compensation Insurance, and in some states, paid time off, sick leave and disability insurance. While household employers must pay overtime, the rate is generally not 1.5x if the care meets the definition of companionship care. Household employers may want to pay Worker’s Compensation Insurance even if not required, because they can be held liable for work-related injuries and resulting medical expenses and lost wages. Workers who accept benefits forfeit the right to sue the employer.

Because the rules are complicated, some small business owners think it makes sense to add household employees to their business payroll. The IRS specifically prohibits paying personal, domestic employees through business payroll. They have ruled that these employees do not directly contribute to the success of a business and including them on business filings is considered an illegal tax deduction. Paying household employees correctly can lead to large deductions when you file your taxes. In-home care prescribed by your doctor may be deductible if it exceeds 7.5% of adjusted gross income. Utilizing a flexible spending account (if your company offers one) to pay for medically required in-home care, can save a family $1,800-2,200 per year. Families can also claim up to $3,000 for the first child or dependent for whom they use paid care and up to $6,000 for multiple dependents. The credit is a percent of the amount paid but can result in savings of 20-30%. September Saws & Slaws NewsBy Jody Dickson / Heather Hanson

Out In The Yard – Heather HansonLast night I was fortunate to attend a Jefferson County Open Space Stewardship Lecture in Golden. Dan West from Colorado State University was there to talk about the pests that threaten our pines. I have been alarmed lately by the hue of some of our canyon pines, including my own. West tells us that one of the most important things you can do to deter pests is to clear out the slash and dead trees that line the forest floor. Stacking wood between trees is discouraged. These are lovely winter homes for wintering beetles and budworms to move toward during their annual migratory flight. Peak flight usually happens around July through August. Steps are recommended to clear out areas around and under the trees canopy on trees showing signs of stress from pests. Find out more about identifying problematic beetles and budworms and what you can do about them here at: https://www.jeffco.us/DocumentCenter/View/18353/LandStew_ForestPests3

Safety Tip of the Month – Jody DicksonSafety Tip for September: Listen to your Body! Part of knowing your limits (last month’s safety tip) is paying attention to the needs of your body when you are mitigating. No matter what kind of work you are doing, if your body is telling you to drink water or take a break, then do it! If you are feeling low on energy, take the time to eat a little something to fuel yourself. It doesn’t matter what kind of work you are doing. Regardless if you are operating a chainsaw, hauling slash or raking pine needles, any fatigue or discomfort can result in an injury. As one of our sawyer’s always says “Slow is fast.” You’ll do better work and have a better chance of staying injury-free, if you take it slow and take care of your body in the process. I am horrible at this, and it is a new habit I’m trying to build.

August Events: On Saturday, August 24th, Saws and Slaws held a Legacy Event on Divide View Drive where we worked together to cut trees and drag/load slash. We also had a Firewood Event on the 16th.

September Events: In September Jefferson County will have slash collection at Blue Mountain. Slash – limbs, branches and tree debris. Maximum length – 8 feet. Maximum diameter – 6 inches. Pine needles, tree bark and pine cones, bagged or unbagged. September 21, 2019, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at Blue Mountain

Our next meeting is: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st – From 7:00 to 9:30 PM , at the Coal Creek Canyon Community Hall, 31528 Highway 72, Golden, CO 80403

We have a very special guest presenter for our next meeting – Jeff Kanipe. He will take us out into the Deep Skies and reveal details about the stars! His presentation is entitled “Annals of the Deep Sky: Constructing the Heavens in an Epic Celestial Guide”. Jeff is an excellent writer who has authored many astronomy and science books, most recently the ongoing multi-volume series Annals of the Deep Sky: A Survey of Galactic and Extragalactic Objects. Each of these volumes explores a number of constellations. He will also talk about how they go about compiling these volumes and some lessons learned, and surprises, while doing it. Copies of the multi-volume set will be on sale at our meeting for about $25/each. Sky & Telescope Magazine calls the series “the next great deep-sky handbook.”Jeff has also worked as an editor and writer for publications including Astronomy, StarDate, and SPACE.com. Jeff and his wife, award-winning astronomy and space journalist Alex Witze, live and observe with their many telescopes from their home in the foothills northwest of Boulder, a community similar to Coal Creek Canyon. They co-authored a book called Island on Fire: The Extraordinary Story of a Forgotten Volcano That Changed the World which they may also have for sale. John Williams and Leonard David will also provide Astronomy News and international space mission updates. After the

presentations, we’ll set up our telescopes check out Jupiter, Saturn and other celestial objects, weather permitting.SEPTEMBER NIGHT SKIES – An End to SummerBy John WilliamsWe get asked a lot about telescopes; beginner scopes in particular. Our goal is to hook you on the night sky; to get you out exploring the Moon, the Sun (with proper filters and protection), the planets and beyond. Surprisingly, you don’t have to spend a lot of money or have a big telescope to do these things. My first telescope in 1975 cost me $20; that’s about $75 today. I bought it myself. It was a small reflector, with plastic lenses and cardboard tube. It was super easy to use and easier to maintain. It was light and portable. It showed me the craters of the Moon and the clouds of Jupiter. I was most excited when I guessed where Saturn was in the night sky and saw the rings for the first time. I’ll never forget that experience. The cheapest of telescopes sealed my love for astronomy. It was better than the telescope Galileo used to change the science of astronomy. A pair of cheap binoculars borrowed from my grandmother brought deep sky objects to my attention. By star hopping (using bright stars as markers to find dimmer stars and dimmer stellar objects), I could find faint galaxies, gaseous nebulae and compact globular clusters. I could sail from the edges of the solar system to the far reaches of this galaxy and beyond. I could take the binoculars anywhere and the sky was mine. A few years ago, I bought a $100 pair of Celestron binoculars with a wide field of view. It’s my instrument of choice for stargazing; just laying back and taking it all in.

A quick search online showed dozens of telescopes under $80; many by well-known telescope makers such as Celestron and Meade. As school begins and we start thinking about how to engage our children’s interest in the natural world, starting simple is the best path to lifelong learning. More importantly, my advice is to hook first then upgrade once the passion and interest show consistently. Don’t miss a chance to check out the Moon or Jupiter even with this summer’s cloudier weather. Recently, our Sky Watchers group offered a service where we come out and help setup and familiarize you with your new telescope – or one you have had for awhile and need help using. If you desire such a visit, please go to our website www.sky-watchers.co and fill out the form. We’ll be sure to get back to you as soon as we can. September begins with a waxing Moon that will grow throughout the first two weeks of the month. The Full Corn or Harvest Moon occurs on September 13th. This is the closest Full Moon to the September equinox. If you’re someone who howls in the seasons, you’re going to have to get up early. Equinox in Coal Creek Canyon occurs at 1:50 am Monday, September 23rd. The night

Mercury, Venus and Mars are still close to the Sun and all set by 7:30 pm. If you’re interested in viewing the outer planets, mark September 9th on your calendar. Neptune reaches opposition, meaning it’s closest to Earth and the brightest. And although it will appear only as a small blue dot in even the largest telescopes, it’s worth the hunt. Neptune, discovered in 1846, is the only planet not visible to the naked eye. Its discovery was predicted by using math and once a guess on its location was announced, several telescope observers found it quickly. The blue planet sits in Aquarius this month, straight overhead at about midnight.FULL MOON HIKES - Our local Sky Watcher Joelle Dunaetz leads Full Moon Hikes on or near the date of the full Moon, weather permitting. Geophysicist Dr. Bob shared his and his team’s enthusiasm in being selected by NASA to send their scientific instrument to the surface of the Moon to probe its deep interior. (For details, see the Sky Watchers article in the August issue of Mountain Messenger.) Astrophysicist Dewey Anderson also gave a presentation about the Mars Society’s analogue sites in Utah and the Arctic. At these research stations, about six or seven people live together for one to four weeks or more to simulate a mission to Mars doing “extravehicular activities” (field science). Dewey designed and built the spacesuits they wear and also helped build these Research Stations. He brought a collection of items related to his talk and several people had fun trying on the space helmets as seen in the photos. Proactive Fire Mitigation PlanIn 2018, Colorado wildfires consumed nearly half a million acres of land and more than 400 homes, according to the Denver Post. United Power takes wildfire risk seriously and continuously makes comprehensive system improvements to mitigate wildfire potential in its territory. Here are some of the ways we’re being proactive:

• Risk mitigation begins with vegetation around power lines. United Power has contracted additional crews to remove dead and growing trees near power lines and right of ways.

• Policy decisions regarding upgrades to existing infrastructure and new construction, including the use of underground lines and more heat insulating equipment.

• Analysis and study into new and emerging technology to further prevent wildfires.

For more information on United Power’s fire mitigation plan, visit www.unitedpower.com.

How Ready are You?September is National Preparedness MonthSevere weather is a fact of life, and it’s important to make sure you and your family are prepared for when they occur. Each September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency recognizes National Preparedness Month to educate and empower Americans to take simple steps to prepare for and respond to potential emergencies that could affect us where we live, work and visit. This year’s theme (“Prepared, Not Scared. Be Ready for Disasters.”) touches on four distinct aspects of emergency preparation:

Save Early for Disaster Costs. Emergencies hit us when we least expect and could be costly if we aren’t prepared beforehand. Does your insurance adequately cover the costs of a natural disaster? Most homeowners’ and renters’ insurance does not cover flood damage. It’s important to have funds available when emergencies disrupt daily life, and sometimes ATMs aren’t immediately available. Do you have an emergency fund?

Make a Plan. Preparing your family for an emergency is as simple as a conversation over dinner, and it’s important to include kids in the disaster planning process. Practice your plan, including evacuations, fire escapes and turning off utilities like natural gas.

Youth Preparedness. Teach children what to do in an emergency if they are at home or away. They should know how to communicate during an emergency, with you, friends or emergency responders. Review family emergency plans regularly, or even have them practice building their own emergency kits.

Get Involved in Community Preparedness. Take some time to learn about the hazards most likely to affect your community and their responses. Look for opportunities to get involved volunteering with organizations before, during and after potential disasters. Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) trains volunteers to prepare for the types of disasters their community may face.

For more information on emergency preparedness, including sample emergency plans, visit www.ready.gov.
