Painting Tips

• Ask for small paint samples and paint squares

of each color on your wall; live with it and watch the way the

light hits it at different times of day to find the best color for

your room.

• Use painter’s tape to protect molding, trim and fixtures. Taking the time to tape will

save you time in the long run and give you a professional

looking finish.

• Invest in the right paint, brushes and rollers. Higher-quality paint goes on with a

smoother, deeper finish. Cheap rollers have lint that

will stay behind on your wall; you’ll see the flecks in the dried paint. Brushes that

have any dried paint in them should be discarded and

replaced with new ones that won’t streak your paint.

• Cover your floor and furniture with drop cloth; old sheets do

the trick nicely.

• Taking a break? You don’t have to wash your brush or rollers between work times.

Simply cover your brush and rollers in plastic bags and

wrap it around them to limit the air that gets into the bag. It will keep them moist with paint and ready to use when

you’re back to work.

Save Money and Keep Cool

1. Arrange furniture and drapes so they don’t restrict

airflow from registers.

2. Keep room air moving by utilizing a whole-house

fan or ceiling fans.

3. Reduce your home’s heat gain by pulling drapes or shades,

or installing awnings, over sun-facing windows.

4. Increase your air conditioner’s efficiency by cleaning or

replacing filters.

5. Install a programmable thermostat.

6. Reduce humidity inside your home. Minimize mid-day

washing and drying clothes, showering and cooking.

7. Use caulk, weather stripping and insulation to

cut back on air moving from inside to out.

8. Talk with an air conditioning contractor about installing dampers to restrict

the flow of cooled air to rooms you rarely use.

betty buzz: ART IN THE HOME

ARtFul OptiONsYou do not have to spend a fortune to f ill your home with original art. Here are some ways to start building your collection:✔ open your mind to found art pieces. a collection of one

type of found object (old clocks or pieces of china, for example) can give a wall a life of its own.

✔ if you have children, you have a young artist in your home. frame the next masterpiece and display it proudly!

✔ young, local artists often sell their art at more accessible prices.

✔ outsider and folk art add a unique visual for any room.✔ collect the personal treasures you’ve been storing

away and put them in a shadow box.

HANGiNG ARt✔ a good rule of thumb: the center point of the picture or

grouping is at about eye level.✔ when grouping pictures or objects, play with the

arrangement on a large table or on the ground before you start nailing.

✔ illuminating art gives a completely different look to the room and adds a bit of drama. remember: this is not just for grandiose rooms; a lit piece of art in the bathroom also doubles as a nightlight.

✔ forget hanging! Display art by placing it on a shelf; suspended shelves are very popular, so they are easy to find.

betty buzz: TEN STEpS TO A bEAuTIfuL GARdEN

Casey O’Dell of O’Dell Landscaping shares her top ten list for getting the garden of your dreams.1. start from the ground up. it is very important that you have a proper grade as it decreases drainage problems that can

lead to pest and disease.

2. you’ve got to have good dirt. take several samples throughout your yard and take them to the clemson extension so that you know what your soil needs to be the best. organic matter (compost) is always a must.

3. mulch, mulch, mulch. mulch protects plant’s roots and keeps them cool and moist in the summer. Jim martin, executive director for the charleston parks conservancy, recommends using shredded oak leaves. pine bark mulch and pine straw are great too.

4. be a pruner snob. only buy the best; i prefer bypass pruners to anvil pruners, because they cut clean and don’t tear at your plants. always clean your pruners with alcohol after using so you don’t spread disease, and remember to sharpen them.

5. water. water with the correct frequency making sure you are consistent and don’t over-water. make a schedule and stick to it, or consider an irrigation system.

6. take a daily walk. walk through your garden as often as possible, preferably daily. check for anything that looks unusual like fungus or pests. it is important to monitor for problems, so you catch it early. also you get to take joy in seeing what has bloomed!

7. research plants before you buy. walk around your neighborhood and see what is doing well to get ideas on what will do well at your house. read plant tags before you buy, ask knowledgeable nursery staff for advice and use books and the internet to learn all that you can.

8. make a long range plan. you don’t have to do everything at once, but having a long-term plan helps you achieve the

garden of your dreams. Draw a sketch of what and where you plant items and what you’d like to plant in the future. start a gardening journal to record what you’ve planted, what you want to have, what blooms when, plant care and maintenance tips and more.

9. maintain your equipment. sharpen and clean all pruning devices with alcohol after

pruning and wD40 them to maintain mobility. also, it is important to make sure you regularly sharpen your mower blade.

10. Love your garden! Love is really the secret ingredient to a beautiful garden. if you make your garden a labor of love, you will see great results!

betty buzz: dECORATING TIpS fROM THE pROS

A sophisticated, stylish home can be had at any price range and in any size space. Charleston-based interior designer, Ginger Brewton, named one of the top 20 designers to watch in 2010 by House Beautiful magazine, shares her advice on where to invest and where to spend less, and her do’s and don’ts for getting the look you want. spLurge: • sofa - you get what you pay for. invest wisely in a well-made sofa, and it will last forever; you can

just recover when the fabric wears out.• rug - a beautiful rug makes quite a statement in a room and is something you can always take with

you. it doesn’t have to be large – you can always layer it over a less-expensive sisal rug.• paint - a great paint job is worth every penny and can make a huge difference!• window treatments - they are an investment, and although available cheaper, you can tell a big difference in the quality

and fabrics. • chest of Drawers - great storage, easily movable and can be used in a bedroom, dining room, living room or foyer. save:• art - great art does not have to be expensive. one of my favorite pieces is something i purchased for $5 at a garage sale.• side tables - find great pieces at great prices from online retailers or flea markets. remember, paint does wonders!• Decorative accents - items for your tabletop, bookcases, etc. that can be switched out every so often.• sheets - Don’t save money in exchange for comfort, but you can find great, plain sheets for a reasonable price.• Lamps - switch out shades, add trim or create your own lamp from something you find at a flea market!

tOp 5 DEcORAtiNG DOs AND DON’tsDo: • Always start with a floor plan – use blue tape on the floor if it makes visualizing easier for you. Make sure what you

purchase can fit through your doorways.• Mix wood tones in a room – this will bring in variation and warmth.• Go neutral on main/larger pieces such as a sofa, and bring in patterns and color on throw pillows. This also makes it easy

to change the room seasonally or when you grow tired of the accent fabrics.• Go to flea markets! There are always hidden gems.• Remember your lighting – wattage, dimmers – this is what creates ambience

Don’t:• Don’t forget your accent pieces. You should always have a table to set your cocktail on, next to each seat.• Don’t buy “matchy-matchy” – EVER. Mix styles and periods. This gives a room interest.• Don’t rush things – this is a huge mistake I see over and over again. We are not Extreme Home Makeover so be patient,

take your time and do your research.• Don’t forget your ceilings! Wallpaper or paint; it is a huge blank canvas that many people forget about.• Don’t be afraid to ask for help – whether you need a two hour consultation or help with a full scale project, there are

designers out there for all budgets!

betty buzz: dO IT YOuRSELf!

Want to tackle a home project? This list will help you decide whether to take it on or farm it out. 1. be realistic. be sure of your own abilities, as jobs as small as putting up shelves can be tricky. often times, older homes

have “surprises” waiting for you that you may not have considered. Give yourself time and prepare to be at it for hours, days or weeks.

2. necessary tools. Do you have the right knowledge, tools and skills for the job? your project may require specific tools that you’ll need to rent or purchase. study up on the project prior to starting and ask for tips and advice from friends who’ve done similar work.

3. complicated Jobs. Does your job involve gas, electricity and plumbing? best leave it to the professionals. be mindful of heavy lifting - you don’t want to damage your home, furniture, or, most importantly, your body.

4. Quality assurance. Don’t skimp on the necessities to cut costs. poor quality is instantly noticeable, and you’ll be reminded of it everyday that you’re in your home, and again at resale time.

5. simple tasks. most people can accomplish tasks like painting, replacing mirrors or switch plates or hanging shelves. read instructions carefully before starting to make sure you have all of the items that you need and take your time to make sure you get it right.

6. time is money. calculate the amount of time you would expect to spend on a project and be truthful with yourself. if you do not have the time to devote to the project, or if your time is best spent doing other things, consider hiring a pro.

7. get a second opinion. a consultation fee with a professional before taking on a big project may save you thousands in costly mistakes!

8. use your best Judgment. books, television

shows and online resources can make projects like hanging drywall look like a breeze. remember: these people have the right tools, years of experience and a staff of trained professionals helping them make it look just that easy.

3. request a Quote. make sure the bid is in writing and includes detailed information and specifications.

4. the contract. it should include the following: ✓ both of your names and addresses ✓Details of work to be performed, including who is responsible for each step of the process (demo to trash collection) ✓Materials used; avoid the term “or equal to”, and make sure any substitutions must be pre-approved by you ✓a completion date and details on payment

1) Know your networking style. whether better one on one or in large groups, you can find a networking opportunity that works for you! visit everybusywoman.com’s business & finance special section for a comprehensive list of local networking opportunities.

2) How can i help you? when you enter a situation with the goal of fulfilling another’s need, you create a connection and establish a relationship that will stand the test of time.

3) Don’t start from scratch. make a list of your existing network. connect people on your list to each other, and they’re likely to return the favor. also, look for third party connections to the people you need to meet.

4) Have a Goal. make a list of your career objectives and join professional groups, volunteer for committees, speak at conferences, etc. that directly relate to the goals you’ve set for yourself.

5) Networking isn’t about business - it’s about relationships. when you get to know someone, you create a relationship and that is what networking is all about. it doesn’t matter if you’re buying a car or need a new logo, you are going to call on someone that you have a relationship with.

6) Organize Your contacts. when you come away from a networking opportunity, take the time to establish that contact in your management system of choice. write down tips to help you remember this person and how you met. set reminders for yourself to check in with them.

• Snap green beans• Mix ingredients and

pour liquids• Knead and shape yeast dough

4-year-olds can also • Peel oranges or hard cooked eggs

“Make sure you are ready for cotillion. Boys should have a shirt, tie and jacket. Girls should have the

proper, tea-length dress, a white sweater, flat shoes with a strap, socks or tights in nude, white or

ivory and of course, white gloves. Do yourself a favor and get an extra pair of gloves and socks and/or

stockings! Check with your instructor to make sure you have the right attire.”

First Day of school for students: berkeley county - tuesday, august 17 charleston county - wednesday, august 18Dorchester county - monday, august 16

prepare for the First Day: • Be enthusiastic about the upcoming change.• Make a visit to the school and classroom and meet your new teacher in advance.• Get your school supply list and make a date for you and your child to shop for the supplies. • Set up a play date with other children from the class or program.• Start your daily routines early: pack lunch, lay out clothes, set standard bed and wake up times.• Make extra time on the first day for talking and a long goodbye.• If a child cries or whines when being left, staying will only make it worse.

Do not get angry, but be firm and supportive.• At the end of the day, focus on what your child’s day was like - sharing the experiences.

you’ll have plenty of time to worry about your to-do list later.

Find Your look✔clip out pictures, images, colors and patterns that you

like out of magazines, fabrics, catalogues, etc.✔paste the images onto a plain page of a book or put

them on a display board.✔use the collage as inspiration for pairing items together

in your wardrobe. make a list of any items you need to complete your desired look, and take your list with you shopping.

Buy smart✔purge the closet and donate or consign all of the

clothes you have not worn in over one year. no more “I’ll lose the weight” or “Maybe next year!” Take a deep breath and get riD of it! goodwill will even pick-up from your home, and if you choose to consign, you’ll have extra cash for buying clothes you wiLL wear. this goes for shoes too!

✔pick out the items you love the most in your closet. what do you love about them? search for items that have the same qualities, or will accessorize well with your favorites to create a new look.

✔buy quality, not quantity. Do not be fooled by the sale price. you are much better off buying a couple of high- quality items seasonally than getting 15 different cheap ones that will not be wearable or en vogue next season!

Beauty Do’s and Don’ts

DO: • Experiment.

Find out what the latest trends are and give it a try!

• Play Up Your Best Features. Have gorgeous eyes? Glam it up with eyeliner, shadows and mascara. Perfect pout? Play up your pucker with lipsticks and

glosses.

• Ask for Advice. Makeup pros can give you a

whole new perspective and take your look from drab to fab.

• Keep it Simple. Be realistic about what style and

look you can maintain given your schedule and tendencies.

DON’T: • Get Stuck in a Rut.

Haven’t changed up your routine since high school?

This “don’t” is for you! New cuts, colors and styles can

bring out your best.

• Over Do It. Use complimentary colors in

small quantities. Check yourself out in natural light before

heading out the door.

• Use Your Friend’s Products. Cosmetics carry bacteria that can

easily be transferred. Invest in your own supplies.

• Skip It. Looking your best isn’t an

“extra” or about your vanity. It’s about putting your best foot

forward and feeling good about yourself!

The Right Sports Bra

There are 2, basic designs: ✔ Encapsulation - two cups

with properly fitting underwires or a firm chest band to assist

with support; good forlarge-breasted women

✔ Compression - presses breasts flat to the chest and are typically pulled on over the head; good for women who wear an A or B cup

Things to consider: ✔ Type of sports activity:

high-impact sports require more support than low-impact

✔ Your size: Measure around your chest just under the breasts & add five inches. For cup size,

measure around the chestover the fullest part of your

breasts; if the measurement is 1” larger, you’re probably an A cup, 2” = B cup, 3” = C cup and so

on. Compression bras often come in S, M, L and XL, so

try on several models to decide which one fits your shape.

✔Features: seam placement; wide nonelastic shoulder straps;

breathable, wicking fabrics; ample armholes; covered hooks

or fasteners (if present);little vertical stretch compared

with horizontal stretch; supportive chest band underneath the breasts

Daily Fiber Help

Aim for 25 - 30 g of fiber/day. • Add fresh strawberries to a

bowl of high-fiber cereal.• Eat a sweet potato rather

than a white potato. • Toss kidney, black or pinto beans on a salad full of green,

leafy vegetables. • For a snack, reach for

pretzels, popcorn, graham crackers or nuts.

• Buy breads and pastas that list whole wheat flour as the first ingredient on the food label.

Trade-in Your Used Car

✔Negotiate the best possible price for your new car before

you discuss the possibility of a trade-in.

✔Be sure you know the trade-in value of your car

by checking the Black Book or Kelley Blue Book value.

Remember: the trade-in value will be lower than the estimated

value of the car. ✔In general, you will get

more money by selling your car yourself than by trading it in.

“For all your wedding stationery elements that are sent before your wedding, it is not appropriate

and bad luck to use your three-letter married monogram. If you want to use a three letter

monogram then you should use your maiden name monogram or, as a more contemporary alternative, use a two letter monogram that is the first name

initial of the bride enlaced with the first name initial of the groom.”

Planning an Event Also Means Un-planning

Organizing the after-party clean up should be done with as much care as planning the event itself. Many questions and issues arise

that must be addressed. Here are just a few to think

about from All Occasions Party Rentals:

• Where does the excess food and beverage go?

• Do you need foil or “take out” boxes? Not a glamorous

task but you must know who is responsible for garbage removal.• Who is the last person on site

to turn off the lights andlock the doors?

• And, one last note, don’t let any one dump the left overand excess ice on the grass

because the grass will freezeand you’ll have a large brown

spot for months to come.

Getting Married?

Here are the top 5 ways to make sure you’re still friends with your

bridesmaids after the wedding from the team at The Club at

Seabrook Island: 1. Choose a bridesmaid’s dress they like - and maybe even one

they can wear again!2. Let them help, but don’t

demand that they do.3. The gift you give them doesn’t have to be expensive, but make

sure it’s thoughtful.4. Remember that their lives (and budgets) don’t revolve

around your wedding.5. Don’t forget to say thank you!

Wedding Do’s

1) Set a Budget – Generally costs should breakdown like this:

Reception and catering – 40%Alcohol and bartenders – 10%Gown and accessories – 10%

Music – 10%Ceremony and rings – 10%

Photos/Video – 8%Flowers – 7%

2) Remember the Details – Mentally imagine the day and

how it will flow. Everything you see happening in your head, write down on a running list.

3) Give Yourself Time –

You can start planning for your special day over 12 months in advance. Check out the

Wedding Day Checklist on page 51. Group errands and to do’s by location and bring “work” (invitations, thank you notes, etc) with you to occupy any

waiting time.

4) Delegate – From planning your big day to

leaving for the honeymoon, there is a lot to get done. Your friends and family want to help you, so

let them!

5) Hire a Coordinator or Planner –

Whether you have complete planning or just day-of

coordination, you’ll end up saving money and your sanity by having an expert helping you. There are planners and coordinators for every price

range, so call around.

busy woman tips

Wedding Don’ts

1) Live in La La Land – It never rains in La La Land,

but we don’t live there. Planning for the best-case scenario is not

planning at all.

2) Overextend Yourself – Inviting 300 guests means

providing enough food, drink and space to accommodate each person. Be realistic about what you can afford and plan your wedding based on that reality.

No matter the size or scale, your day will be memorable because you’re surrounded by those who

love you the most.

3) Get Your Timing Off – From trying on dresses with bridesmaids to your wedding reception, remember to end

on a “high note”. Your guests will leave remembering how great of a time they have had,

not checking their watches wondering when is a good time

to make an exit.

4) Loose Your Cool – In the end, no one will

remember the little snags that inevitably occur, but they will

remember your freak out! Keep close to your heart and

mind the mantra: “this is about love, fun and joy”.

5) Forget Who You Are – You’ll want to look and feel

your best – so, that means not wearing 4-inch heels when

you’re a flip flop girl. From the makeup you wear to the tone of your day, make it reflect you and

your honey’s personalities.

“Take the time to include a handwritten note to each bridesmaid when you give the bridesmaids

their gifts. Since most brides give all of the bridesmaids the same gift, this is a way to add a

personal touch to each gift. Plus, you should never miss an opportunity to let your best

girlfriends know why they are so important to you and how much you appreciate them!”
