MANSFIELD STUDENTS ARE ALL CHARACTER!
"Intelligence plus character-
that is the goal of a true education."
Dr. Martin Luther King
Character education is a partnership with parents
and the community to foster honest, responsible,
and caring students. It is an intentional and proac-
tive effort to help students understand, care
about, and act upon basic values that we all
share. Character Education promotes a positive
school climate where students are more polite,
honest and respectful, enhances student achieve-
ment by improving school attendance and reducing
classroom conflicts, and encourages community
involvement and a lifelong commitment to helping
others.
Each school integrates character education into
three main areas:
1. Academic Environment: Established rules and
procedures promote a productive, civil and safe
school.
2. Curriculum and Instruction: Character traits are
integrated into the classroom lessons to promote
understanding and decision making skills.
3. Service Learning: Students are involved in acts
of service to help them develop a sense of respon-
sibility and concern for the well being of oth-
ers. It is through these hands on experiences
that students reflect and learn how their actions
can make a difference.
MTES focuses on a different trait each month; however, all character traits are highlighted and modeled
throughout the year. The character traits include:
Honesty: Be truthful in word and action
Respect: Show high regard for self, others, and property
Effort: Always do your best
Kindness: Show concern for the well being of others
Politeness: Show good manners toward others
Tolerance: Show sympathy for or acceptance of feelings, habits, or beliefs that are different
Responsibility: Be accountable for your own behavior
Trustworthy: Be dependable and reliable
Loyalty: Be faithful to commitments or obligations
Fairness: Demonstrate impartial, unbiased, and equitable treatment for all

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS OF OUR CHILDREN
FACT:
- New Jersey falls below the national average of kindergarten students attending a full-day program
- 27 school districts in Burlington County provide full-day kindergarten….7 do not
- Mansfield Township is the ONLY district of the NBC sending districts that does NOT provide a full-day
kindergarten program
FACT:
“Attempting to repair reading skills in fourth grade is far more expensive and risky than guaranteeing good
reading skills in kindergarten!”
-NEA
FACT:
Full-day kindergarten:
- provides an essential bridge between pre-K and the primary grades
- enables children to develop the academic, social and emotional skills they need to be successful
- lays a strong foundation to boost student performance, access and attainment in future years of school
- gives our children the academic learning time needed to prepare for reading and mathematic skills and re-
duces the need for remediation in future grades

Summer Reading Program….update!
Starting Off the School Year
with Reading Success
Mansfield students did an excellent job
completing the Summer Reading Program!
Students returned to school in September,
ready to discuss the grade-level appropriate
books they enjoyed throughout the summer.
Teachers reviewed reader’s response forms
with students, and created fun and engaging
activities to establish the foundation for
reading and build community in their class-
rooms. Developing posters, creating charac-
ter selfies, presenting “book talks,” and
illustrating favorite scenes are a sampling
of the exciting literacy activities that
kicked off this school year.
The achievement did not stop with reading.
Many students practiced their typing skills
this summer and proudly presented their
certificate of completion to classroom
teachers the first day of school. Those
students received a prize for their key-
boarding practice and the effort they ex-
hibited over the summer.
A special thanks to all of our families for
their support of Mansfield’s Summer Read-
ing and Keyboard-
ing Programs!
