Figure 4: Rotation Range (90°)

Product Description

SAM™ (Strong-Arm-Mount™) SystemEVID™’s SAM™ system (Strong-Arm-Mount™) excels at meeting the fourrequirements for mounting FGM/BGMsystems: simple, quick, versatile, andreliable. Three easy steps and you aredone: Attach the surface bracket to thewall or ceiling; attach the EVID™enclosure to the bracket with the socket-head bolt; aim the enclosure and tightenthe bolt. SAM™ allows greater flexibilityfor aiming than ball-type mounts that limitrange of motion when not on center.Typical ball designs have limited rotationwhen pointing straight ahead, and eventhat is reduced when the enclosurecontacts the wall and is moved off axis. Bycontrast, SAM™ allows full rotation evenat full sweep. Figure 4 shows SAM™’srange of rotation (note that EVID™’scurved cabinet allows it to rotate muchfurther [90°] than a rectangular ortrapezoidal box). Figure 5 shows the rangeof sweep motion left and right on the wall. All three models allow 100° of sidewisemotion.

Step-by-Step Installationand Wiring (3.2, 4.2, 6.2)Step 1: Mount the SAM™ Bracketto the WallThe SAM™ bracket can be mounted oneither side of the speaker, enablingoptimal configuration for any installation.Determine whether the bracket should bemounted on the left or right side of thespeaker before you bolt the speaker tothe bracket. It is best to mount the bracketon the side away from the direction inwhich the speaker will be aimed. Thisensures that the full swing angle isavailable for aiming on that side andprovides easier access to the swingtightening bolt on the wall bracket (seeFig. 10, Step 3). For safety, make sure themounting surface can support more thanthe speaker's weight! Use only industry-accepted fasteners and mountingmethods when mounting the bracket.Consult an expert if you are not sure.Read steps 2 and 3 before wiring thespeaker in step 4.For standard vertical installation mount theSAM™ bracket as shown in Figure 6. Forhorizontal mounting configurations, mounting the bracket on the bottom side(as in Figure 7) is easiest and safest, andallows the speaker to be mounted closerto the ceiling.

Step-by-Step Installationand Wiring (12.1Subwoofer)Step 1: Mount the BracketThe mounting bracket can be installed twoways (see Figures 20 and 21), allowingoptimal configurations for installations.Leave 1.5" of space between thebracket and the ceiling when installingin a corner!Attach the bracket to the wall with suitablefasteners screwed into structural membersin the wall. Remember: It is theinstaller's responsibility to insure thatthe structure can safely support theload.

Step 2: Install the Safety LineUsing accepted safe rigging practices, secure one end of a suitable safety line(use cable, not chain, which will rattle) to astrong, secure point above the speaker, apoint that can withstand the shock of thefalling speaker. This is especiallyimportant in public spaces constructedwith light-gauge steel studs. Do notattach the safety line to the bracket! Thesafety line should prevent the speakerfrom falling if the bracket tears loose fromthe wall. Secure the other end to theeyebolt that is fully threaded into theenclosure.

Step 3: Wire the SpeakerThe amplifier and satellite speakers arewired as shown in Figure 22. It is highlyadvisable to support the unit while theseconnections are being made. Connect allwires to the speaker at the back terminalplate observing proper polarity of theconnections. The push-terminals acceptstranded wire up to 14 gauge. When usingtwo satellites, wire the speakers directlyinto the output terminals of the panel. Foursatellites may be connected either as twopairs directly to the output terminals orwith daisy-chain wiring as in Figure 23.

Step 4: Mount the Speaker to theBracketFirst remove the two Phillips-head screwson the rear of the enclosure. Use thesupplied eyebolt to mount one mountingclip to the top of the speaker as shown inFigure 24. Check to make sure that thewiring connections to the amplifier and thesatellite speakers are correct and secure.

For corner mountingAttach the four rubber mounting feet to thefront side edges, and secure the safetyline to the eyebolt. Lift the enclosure up tothe ceiling and center it back it into thecorner until it touches the bracket rungs, then carefully lower it so the top clip hooksover the top rung of the bracket (1). Insertone of the 3/8-16-thread Phillips-headscrews through the remaining clip and, with the clip pointing up, thread the screwfinger-tight into the lower mtg. hole on theenclosure (2, 3). Level the clip and tightensecurely with a #3 right-angle Phillipsscrewdriver.

For midwall mountingAttach the four rubber mounting feet insidethe corners on the side of the enclosurethat will be against the wall and attach thesafety line to the eyebolt. Insert one of the3/8-16-thread Phillips-head screwsthrough the remaining clip and keep itwithin arm's reach. Lift the enclosure up tothe ceiling and bring its back into contactwith the bracket rungs. Slide the enclosuresideways to engage the clip over onebracket rung (1) and, while holding it tightagainst both rungs, insert the 3/8-16-thread screw with its clip into the remain-ing mounting hole so the clip engages theremaining bracket rung (2, 3). Finger-tighten the screw and straighten the clip. The enclosure may now be released. It willslide down the rungs until the four rubberfeet are snug against the wall. Using a #3right-angle Phillips screwdriver, securelytighten the second Phillips-head screw.Gently rotate the EV® logo a quarter turnand press firmly at its center to seat itsecurely into its mounting hole. See Figure25 on p. 10.

Even though the enclosure hangs from thetop clip, always install the lower one tosecure against possible disengagement ofthe top clip. Straighten the EV® logo andpress firmly at its center to seat it securelyinto its mounting hole.

Appendix A: Integrating the Subwoofer

Installation ExamplesThe EVID™ Series is a product family withthe flexibility to fit the requirements ofmany different applications. Listed beloware some suggested combinations forsystems using the 12.1.• Rich, full-sounding low-level background

music and paging in a quiet restaurant, office, or retail space: two EVID™ 3.2sin parallel on each output of a 12.1.

• Moderate-level music and paging in asports bar/restaurant or upbeat retailspace: two EVID™ 4.2s in parallel oneach output of a 12.1.

• Higher-level foreground music in bass-heavy applications such as dance floors, amusement arcades, or loud bars: useone EVID™ 6.2 on each output of 12.1.

EVID™ systems may be used together. For example, a large hotel might use eight3.2s and two 12.1s in the dining room, eight 4.2s and two 12.1s in the lounge, four 6.2s with two 12.1s surrounding thedance floor, 6.2s around the pool, 6.2s or4.2s with or without 12.1s in the lobby, and3.2s in the corridors.

Crossover Frequency andImpedanceThe EVID™ 12.1 is designed to be usedas a passive subwoofer. No additionalamplifiers or signal processors arerequired to achieve full benefit of the12.1's performance. The built-in passivestereo crossover sends the lowest notesof both stereo channels to the 12" dual-coilbass driver and reduces the amount of lowfrequencies sent to the satellite speakers. This allows them to play louder andcleaner while presenting a more even,amplifier-friendly impedance load than if allthe speakers were connected in parallel. The EVID™ 12.1's crossover tunes acombination of electrical and acousticcharacteristics to complement theresponse of the full-range EVID™ models. The crossover point is set electrically inthe 160Hz range with a topology thatenables the nominal system impedance tobe determined by the number of satellitesper channel.

Using a Separate AmplifierChannel for the 12.1In certain specialized applications, it maybe desirable to drive the subwoofer with aseparate amplifier channel. In theseapplications the active crossover pointmust be at or below 160Hz so as not tointerfere with the built-in passive cross-over. Both sections (left and right inputs)must be connected in parallel (4 ohmsystem impedance) when operating as amono device. No load resistors arenecessary on the hi-pass outputs.

Characteristics of AllSubwoofersWhile subwoofers do radiate soundomnidirectionally (in all directions) and thesound is generally non-localizable (onecan't hear exactly where it comes from),subwoofer sound level still drops off thefarther one moves from the subwoofer. The highest output and best room loadingare accomplished with the subwoofermounted in a corner at a three-boundaryjunction (wall/wall/ceiling or wall/wall/floor,an arrangement also referred to as 1/8space). Mounting at a two-boundaryjunction (wall/ceiling, or 1/4 space)produces three dB less output, andmounting in the middle of a room in theceiling (1/2 space) reduces output stillanother three dB.Subwoofers produce large amounts oflong-wavelength low-frequency energy.Every object has its own resonantfrequency, and long wavelengths tend toexcite large objects (like walls, floors, doors and ceiling panels). Anything loosein or on a ceiling or wall will buzz or rattleas a subwoofer's level is increased. Mostof these can be isolated and fixed withsmall, strategically placed bits of foamtape. Others may require driving additionalnails or screws and perhaps somecaulking to dampen their sympatheticmovement. Be aware that as bass levelsincrease, so does the likelihood of rattlesand buzzes.

Appendix B: Painting the EVIDTM Speakers

The 12.1 subwoofer is a painted woodenclosure which can easily be repainted.

Painting Process(3.2, 4.2, 6.2)The EVID™ 3.2, 4.2 and 6.2 are made ofhigh-impact ABS, which accepts a widevariety of paints.• Remove the grille and mask the baffle.• Clean the cabinet and grille by rubbing

the speaker with a lightly dampenedcloth. Do not, however, use abrasivessuch as sandpaper or steel wool. Neveruse gasoline, kerosene, acetone, MEK,paint thinner, harsh detergents, or otherchemicals, as these agents may causepermanent damage to the enclosure.

• After cleaning, apply latex or enamelpaint. Spraying is recommended

Painting the Grille• Painting the grille requires spray

painting. If the grille is rolled or brushpainted, the mesh may become cloggedwith paint and poor sound quality mayresult.

Painting Process(12.1 Subwoofer)• Remove the four screws securing the

front hatch and lift off the hatch panel.Carefully twist and lift off the EV® logoand set it aside.

• The foam grille blocks are held in placeby sharp pins protruding through thebaffle board. Note the relative position ofthe foam and carefully lift the blocks offthe pins. Mask around the input panelwith tape and tape a piece of heavypaper over the woofer. It is not neces-sary to remove any components.

• Clean the cabinet, bracket and clips byrubbing with a lightly dampened cloth.Do not use abrasives such as sandpaperor steel wool. Never use gasoline, kerosene, acetone, MEK, paint thinner, harsh detergents, or other chemicals, asthese agents may cause permanentdamage to the enclosure.

• After cleaning, apply two or more twothin coats of either latex or oil-basedpaint. Spraying is recommended, but abrush and small roller work very well. Itis not necessary to paint all the way upto the woofer. Only the visible surfacesneed to be painted: the hatch front andside edges, the exposed enclosuresurfaces down to the hatch gaskets andabout halfway under where the foamblocks sit. Likewise, the back sides ofthe bracket and clips need not bepainted. The hatch screw heads may bepainted, if desired.

• When the paint is thoroughly dry, carefully unmask everything. Replacethe foam blocks, pressing them gentlydown onto the sharp pins. Replace thehatch cover and tighten the four screws.Locate the small center hole, properlyorient the EV® logo, and press it firmlyinto place at its center to reseat it in themounting hole.
