The fire was not burning more than two hoursin its height, the wind nut blowing very frsh,yet from the intensely combustible nature'of thematerials out of which th.i conflagration wasmade, itjvept with resistless fury and as if bymagic nearly a third of a million of propertyaway, in the abjve brief space.

Not only the amount of property destroyed,but the loss to many of our most worthy citizensis irreparable, men whose all lay in the burntdistrict and who had a mere trifle if anv in-surance. These sufferers have the fullest sym-pathy of the community and will receive, wedoubt not, substantial aid to enable them to re-cruit their shattered fortunes.

The burnt district presented one of the mostsingular spectacles this morning possible. Agreat portion of the area was literally coveredwith the hoops of the oil casks, as if a mowerhad come in with his scythe and cut down aniron harvest, the oil which the casks held wasrunning down in the gutters with a man station-ed in the drain to bail it out as it came along.The wharves, streets, side walks, were one colorand covered with one substance, oil; men werebailing up the comm odity from the dock and oil-cas-

and that is the unsecurity of wood-- n buildingsin any district where oil is stored. If the windis high and the oil is once on fire, nothing canpossibly stop the fl inir-s-, and a substance of thischaracter should not be exp.Hed to the possibleaccidents arising from the firing of wooden struct-ures near it, or in that jrtion of the city wherethe shipping and the oil must le placed. Iaformer times, when the city was smaller lessprovision was made in this respect at present,it is essential that some further security bo adopt-ed for protection against lire.

THURSDAY, OCT. 20. .The currerry question still holds a prominent

position, although really it is quietly settlingdown on the basis on which it should rest a de-

preciation of such gold and silver coins only asare unnecessary in the transaction of business, tosuch a point, as will sooner or later drive themfrom the country. Gold is now so abundant theworld over that no difficulty exists in obtainingan abundance of American gold coins to satiefythe demand for it here. Xot so, however, withsilver coins ; these appear to become more soughtfor and consequently more scarce all over theworld, in the same proportion a gold becomes,more abundant. This coin question is strangelystirred up again in tbe last Pclynesian. Wehave rarely seen in the same space a greater num-

ber of erroneous statements than appear in thecommercial article of that paper. '1 he positionsassumed by the writer of it have been unanim-ously condemned by all who have expressed anyopinion on the subject. The whole article is a .

confused jumble of incoherent and gross misstate-ments, the only effect of which will be to mystifythe subject in the minds of others. There maybe a few who have the same opinion, but theseare probably not engaged in business, and certain-

ly have not correct views on the subject. Saysthe Polynesian writer :

The American dollar is not acurrent coin, that is, it is not available for cur-

rency, and is simply prized as a pocket piece, thesame as old Revolutionary coins, and it is coinedand sold only as merchandise. It is foolish totalk of introducing this coin into currency intothese islands. It can't be introduced here o inthe United States. It is simply an article ofmerchandise, the same as gold or silver bars are

worth, ffbinpared with currency, $1 08 to$1 10. In speaking of a dollar, therefore, wecan only take the actual current coin in circula-tion say two half dollars.

Now, what is the value of the five-fra- nc piececompared with these current American coins?The mint value is the fair standard. The mintin San Francisco purchases five-fran-cs at 07 3-- 10

cents each ; that is to say, a person depositing1000 silver five-fra- nc pieces, will receive in returnin half dollars, $973 less the charge of 1-- 2 of oneper cent, for coinage, or $908. A five-fra- nc

piece is therefore worth in San Francisco 97 3-- 10

cents, compared with the only coins with which itcan be substituted.

Now, what is the value of the silver five-fra- nc

piece in Honolulu? We maintain that it if equalto American gold for all trade purposes, or thedifference is so small as to be imperceptible andof no consequence. But says the Polynesianagain :

" An argument also Is advanced, that we can bny as muchwith a silv r flvr-fran- e s with a dollar, if we only call, andtake it for a dtllar. The real question is not, by what nameit is calked, but what is its purchasing power," and as nearlyevery article nr thing the Government uses has to he purchasedanroad. and the value of thit piece of coin it nowhere greaterthan about 87 cents ia fae power of exchange for othercvmmoditite out of these iland, it is easy to see bow,as we have before stated, the government and tbe people are thelosers by the operation."

This last assertion we deny. The five-fra- nc

piece is passed as a dollar in San Francisco to-da- y.

A hundred dollars shipped by the Frances Palmerin this coin will purchase as much merchandisethere as the same sum in American gold. Fromthis fact, what other argument can be deducedthan that its value is so nearly the same as to bea matter of no consequence, even in a port whereit has so recently been depreciated. For -- shipment

to China also, it is constantly sought for ;

in fact, in the absence of English gold, it is thebest remittance to be bad here, and for that pur-

pose it is worth more than American gold, andwill always be in demand. Here, then, we havea permanent market for this coin, and the factthat it is worth for remittance to China what itpasses for here, is a strong argument in favor ofits present rate. We need have no fear of beingtroubled with an excess of them, even should theybe shipped hither in large quantities, so long asthey are sought for in China, and command thesame value as two American half dollars in everyother country in the world than the UnitedStates.

A more ridiculous assertion, or one furtherfrom the truth, could not be advanced. Is our

treasury" a better judge of tbe value of silverthan tbe United States mint? Is our " treasury"going to attempt to .fix the value of a coin at 85emts, which is worth at tbe U. S. mint 97 centsand a fraction over. Yet, thlj h the absurd re-

think that the American gold dollar, which is

certainly as much a nuisance in our currency

as the French piece, should be served the same

way, viz : put down to 75 cts. each :

"Since the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday,we have heard dirsatUfacUon expressed, that the Chamber doesnot tak- - ueasuves to Introduce the "decimal currency," and putall coins, silver five-franc-s included, down to their true valueIf we apprehend rightly, as the matter now stands, the Chamberof Commerce has, under the New Code, no longer any controlover Uie affair."

The statement made above that there ia general"dissatisfaction expressed," because the Chamberof Commerce does not take measures to introducethe decimal currency and debase the silver five--franc," is wholly incorrect. The course of theChamber in not changing the silver coins is, onthe contrary, generally approved. And thatbody is, moreover, nearly unanimous on thispoint that further action is unwise. In regard to the power of the Chamber of Commerce,- -

we conceive that they have quite as much powerto regulate the rates at which they can take andrefuse coins as they ever had, or as the Ministerof Finance has, and that whenever the public interests call them to act, they will act on thequestion. .

" Reduce the Ore-fra- piece to 00c, and you will then haveas many of tbe now representatives of a dollar in circulation,and a ten ceut piece to boot, as you have now, and in this way,and In this only and one which must eventually come aboutthrough necessity.

As it respects the question of a "Decimal Currency," if theMinister of Finance, who under the New Code is iurested withthe power of saying at what price coins other than the UnitedKtaira shall be taken for Government dui-s-. could be induced todirect that rials shall hereafter be taken at the Treasury for onlyU--u cents, worn and defaced quarters at 20 cento, and mlver nve-fra-

niece at 00 rents, it would at once introduce the decimalcurrency system, and put an end to all future controversy andbad feeling on this penk-xin- subject."

It is idle to talk of the silver five-fra- nc piecescirculating here at 90 cents, accompanied with adime or any other piece. Not a merchant inHonolulu would pay out one at that figure oreven at 94c, when by shipment of them to SanFrancisco they could nett 95 or 96 cents each forthem. What would be the result? Wherewould our counters come from ? Attempts at in-

troducing halves and quarters would prove asthey have always proved, futile. A large lotwere brought here last fall, and put into circula-

tion, and the market is now nearly bare of thern"they having been sold for shipment to China at apremium. A lot has just arrived by the Palmer,but they are worth a premium, and will com-

mand a premium of two per cent for shipment asfast as they can be obtained. The result of anydepreciation of our dollar coin, if successfullymade, would be a loss in every branch of jradenot for a few weeks but for a long period, forthere would be a constant want of counters.

Tf the above extracts are intended to be putforward asfeelers, towards any prospective courseof the government, and we cannot believe

that they are, we have merely to say that anysuch action will meet the decided opposition ofnine-tent-hs of the business community, and anyMinister of Finance who undertakes the job un-

der the New Code" or any code, without theapproval of the mercantile community, will onlydo it at his peril. There are other interests herethan government interests. There are firms herewho transact a vastly larger business, andthrough whose hands more money passes annually,than through the treasury. The recent act of theMinister of Finance, although it was no doubtperfectly wise and expedient, is sufficient to showthat there is such a thing as taking one step toomany. The interests of the government treasuryand of the mercantile community are identical,and we trust that in any changes of currencythere may only be harmonious action.

Perhaps we ought to state in this connectionour views on this question of coins. Tlo actionof the Chamber of . Commerce in depreciatingcertain useless gold and silver coins, to the ratesfixed in San Francisco, we approve of. So alsothe further reductions made by the Minister ofFinance, though exceptions may perhaps be justly taken to the manner in which it was made byhim. This immediate action of the Chamber indepreciating these coins, no doubt was the onlything that kept them from being shipped to usfrom abroad, and their withdrawal by shipmentand otherwise has caused no serious inconveni-ence to the business community.

In regard to the silver five-fran-ce peiees, we

think that no valid objections can tie made to it.There is a very small difference between the realmint value of two half dollars and a 6ilver five-fran- ce

piece, but it is so trifling that it can-

not be made a reasonable ground for depreciatingit. On the other hand, it is the only dollar coin

that can circulate here at the islands. Any at-

tempt to depreciate it, will prove unsuccessfulhere, as it has proved in San Francisco, where itnow passes in trade as one dollar, or equal to twohalves. We therefore say, let five-fran-cs piecesalone. any attempt to depreciate them will onlycreate unnecessary annoyance, and result in noimmediate or prospective good.

As to dimes and half dimes, if it were possibleto introduce them into circulation, we shouldrejoice to seo it dona. But so inveterate is thehatred of the native population towards thesecoins, which foreigners imposed on them at morethan their real value, and then refused to takethem back again, that we do not believe it pos-

sible for any action of the government or of themerchants, or both combined, to restore them tofree circulation among the natives. Even ifSpanish quarters were put down to rials and rialsto six cent pieces, it would not have the slightesteffect towards introducing dimes. It would simp-

ly drive those depreciated coins out of the countryand leave us halves and quarters as our smallestcounters, without the prospect of obtainingsmaller coins. The almost instantaneous andtotal abolition of dimes and half dimes in 1849-5- 0

caused great injury by increasing the price ofsmall articles in trade and causing storekeepersand natives to expect to sell for nothing less thana rial, what really was worth only half that sum.The same inflation of prices would result from adepreciation of quarters and rials few articlescould be bought or sold for less than a quarter.No measuro that has yet been projiosed no lawthat has been passed no action of tho Chamberof Commerce or of any other body, has had thedesired resifft in bringing dimes into circulation..And the depreciation of quarters and ' rials forthis purpose would be equally useless.

time since our Honolulu pub'io have had entertain-

ments offered to them, of so high a chrcter these

of the " Alleghanians or Swiss Bell Ringers," who

arrived on Saturday morning, in the Flying Dragonfrom San Francisco. These musicians come very

highly recommended by the leading journals in all

the cities where they have given concerts.On Tuesday evening they gave their first con-

cert at the Royal Hawaiian Theater, on which occa-

sion the building was filled to its utmost capacity.

All the pieces sung met with unbounded applause,

and the various parts were executed with great artistio

skill. But the chief novelty of the occasion consists

in the Bell ringing, which is one of the most in-

genious musical performances ever invented. In thehands of these musicians the bells, of which there aresome thirty in number, graduated to various notes,

produce a concord of sweet sounds which no who has

an ear for music, can fail to admire. No person

should fail to witness them. The "straw and wood"

instrument is a novelty which must have been inven-

ted by a Yankee, and the manner in which Mr.

Stoepel makes it discourse music is truly wonderfuLTo those who are not already acquainted with

the character of these musicians, we would say thatthere is nothing unchaste or immoral in the perfoam-ance- s.

On tbe other hand, everything is in excellent

taste, leaning to the side of virtue. We would say

to all, go and hear them, and take your children

with you.A Native Killed by a Foreigner--. An unfor-

tunate occurrence took place on Sunday afternoonlast, on board the France Palmer, while that vessel

was Ijing at the wharf, resulting in the death of hersteward, a native, named Charley. It appears thatthe first ofhcer of the vessel, Mr. C. S. Horton, cameon board about six P. M., and finding the suppertable cleargd off, reprimanded the steward, and gavehim directions as to. the hour of supper in future.The latter made some reply to Mr. II., who kicked

the native in the neck or head, causing him toreel over and fall heavily oa the deck. The blow orthe fall appears to have killed him instantly. Tho

body was taken to the Station-hons- e, where a coron-

er's inquest was held, and the following verdict ren-

dered:An inqusit'ion taken at Honolulu, Island of Oahu,

on the ICth day of October in the year 1850 beforeJ. H. Brown, Sheriff, acting as one of the coronersof said Island, upon the body of Peole or Charley,late steward of the Bark Frances Palmer, therelying dead ; by the oaths of the jurors whose namesare hereunto subscribed, who being sworn to enquireas to how and by what means the said Piole came toIi is death ; upon their oaths do say, that the saidPiole came to his death in consequence of a blowupon his head from the foot of C. Mr. Hortou, immediately after the committal ofthe act, voluntarily surrendered himself to the Mar-

shal. On being brought before the Police Court, hiscounsel, J. D.Blair, Esq., waived an examination andthe prisoner was admitted to bail in the sum of

6,000, Capt. James Smith and D. C. Waterman,sureties, to appear before tbe Court to-d- ay for ex-

amination. The charge brought against him in theindictment is manslaughter.

A Cask of Barratrt. Our readers will remem-

ber the visit here, some two years ago, of the Chileanbark Alexander Gar rt got, with a cargo of coals.We have received the following statement of facts inrelation to that vessel : ' Luis Osthaus, on his part,and F. W. Sch wager & Son on theirs, merchants ofValparaiso, do hereby formally declare, thatCapt. David Ross, formerly in'charge of the Alejan-dro Garrigos, with a cargo of 490 tons Chili coals,shipped by F. W. Schwager and Son, and destinedfrom Coronel to Iquique, whence she sailed on the15th of ?ept , 1837, did commit 'Barratry by devia-

ting from his destination, going instead of the Port ofIquique, first to Arica, thence to Callao, where hesold about 100 tons of coal; thence to Honolulu, wherehe sold the remainder of it; changing there the nameof the Alejandro Garrigos into that of F. W. Schwa-

ger aud the Ch li flflg into that of the Hawaiian, andthence preceded to Puget's Sound, where he bought acargo of timber and spars, and lastly from thence toSydney (touching at Tahiti) where he sold both shipand cargo. The Alejandro Garrigos was sold tohim, on trust, by Mr. L. Osthaus and the cargo ofcoals, was intrusted to hiai by F. W. Schwager & Son

for delivers in Iquique. He harun away with bothwithout remitting a cent to either of us, nor have F.W. Schwager & Son been able to recover from theChilian Insurance Company, the value of the cargoinsured in it by them, and in their name, for $2500as per Policies they hold, guaranteeing the risk ofBarratry."

New Bridge at Waialca. We are glad to noticeby the following communication that a new bridgehas been completed at Waialua on this island, forwhich object the last Legislature appropriated $2,000.

StaTjbino Affaib at Sea. The American ShipJlfary Goodell arrived at this port on Saturday to

obtain medical advice for tlje Captain who had beeastabbed by one of his crew. The facts as near as we

can learn, are substantially these : One of the sea-

men, named J, Green, complained to Captain Goodell

about his food. On the 7th of October, while on dutyat the wheel the seaman left his post, and rushedat tho Captain who was walking on tbe quarter deck,and stabbed him in the breast, with a seamen's sheathknife. Tho blade of the weapon fortunately wedgedbetween the ribs and did not penetrate tbe lungs,though it appears to have gone very near them.The seaman has been arrested and will be returnedto the United States for trial.

tor of Tualburg's and Vieuxterop's concerns in theEastern States. Mr. Waldau is a violinist from theConservatory of Music in Leipsic They propose giv-

ing a few concerts during their,. stay in Honolulu.We doubt not they will mee't with the favor and suc-

cess which their high reputation as artists deserves.

Smart Sailing. Last Saturday week, five of ourcrack coasters tbe Maria, Kalama, Manuokawai,Moikeikl, and the sloop Live Yankee Btarted to-

gether for Lahaina. The latter went into Kauna-kahak-ai,

Molokai, delivered her cargo, lay therefourteen hours, and then came to anchor at Lahainabefore any of her competitors, the Maria fol-

lowing her about ten minutes. The ifive Yankeeis a new craft, and though she is yet uncoppered, bidsfair to outsail the whole fleet of coasters and steamers.

fellow; we might say, Driggs is a genius in his way.

You know Driggs, of course. Every body knows him,and he knows every body. In fact, Driggs is a sortof universal favorite, and what Driggs don't know, is

not worth knowing. But the way he views things is

quite amusing. He is quite original in his way of

looking at a thing, quite practical. It is'nt a week,

since we are talking with Driggs in quite a familiarway about his accomplished daughters. Oh, yes,says Driggs, Miss Clementina is very accomplished,(Driggs and we are quite intimate, in fact we thinkMiss Clementina a very nice girl;) but, continuedDriggs, it is quite amusing to see what some of heraccomplishments amount to, and how perseveringshe is about them. Why, my dear sir, she has beenhard at work for tbe past few months in making apicture frame, to imitate what she calls, carvedwork ! --And of all the quantities of leather she hashad about ! scraps of sheep skin, and calf skin, andpaste, and glue, and gum, and lamp-blac- k, and good-

ness knows what else ! Her work-roo- m is quite acuriosity shop ! And away she cuts at the leather,day after day, and paints it, and gums it, and gluesit, and sticks it, and twists it, to imitate "carvedwork !" Well, I don't mind it much; and to tell thetruth she has got quite a respectable imitation of apicture frame, carved with grape leaves and vinesand tendrils ! And all out of scraps of leather, thatwould be lost, were they not rescued from oblivion bythe plastic hand of female genius and refinement."To be sure, added Driggs, " the whole concern,carved in wood, would have cost a couple of dollars,perhaps, and a genuine article at that; but, you see,the saving is immense by having the imitation !That is to say, it would have been immense had tbecareless jirl not overset her varnish, and spoiled aten dollar table cover, and tumbled down the lamp-black, and spoiled a breadth of carpet ! Yes,"added Dsiggs, with parental pride, "Miss Clementinais quite accomplished."

Savage Sport. A crowd of natives assemblednear the Government Wharf onaSaturday, to see aformidable encounter between two combatants of thecanine species, who seemed to bite and tear eachother with most determined ferocity. The fight con-

tinued for near twenty minutes. It seems as thoughany little incident is welcome these dull times, eventhough it is in the shape of a dog fight.

From Lahaina. We learn that the roof timbersof the new Court House are being put up and thebuilding rapidly progressing to completion. Mr.Neilson is, we are happy to learn, pronounced out ofimmediate danger, and in a fair way to recover.

Burglart. On Tuesday, a native named Moku-la- u,

was brought before tbe Police Magistrate chargedwith burglary in entering the dwelling of Mr. DanielMontgomery, at Puuloa. The Prisoner pleased guil-ty, and was committed for trial at the SupremeCourt.

Shipped in toe Chain Gang. A native, (Kapa-una-,)

who was some weeks ago arrested for stealingboots and shoes from the store of J. H. Wood, was onWednesday, sentenced in the Police Court to oneyear hard labor on the reef.

A New Bell. Fire Company No. 2, have re-

ceived from San Francisco by the Palmer, a new firebell. It appears to be of good material and work-

manship, and gives a very deep full sound, f wasmanufactured in Sheffield, England, and cost nearly$300..

to enable us to hold our position against amuch larger force than John Bull has in this part oftbe world. .

" The town or city of San Juan, which consisted,when we arrived, of one tent, now contains some tenor fifteen buildings, consisting of stores, bake-house-s,

dwellings, &c. It is truly wonderful to see the pro-gress of the American people. If the town shouldcontinue to grow as fast for three months to come, itwill undoubtedly be tbe largest city in WashingtonTerritory." .

United Stntca.Thb San Jcan Island Difficulty at Washing-

ton. A dispatch from Washington in the morningpapers shows that our Government is acting withcommendable promptness in the matter at issue withthe authorities of British Columbia. We are toldthat Government has been already advised by Gen.Harney of his proceedings in taking possession ofthe island of San Juan, and the steamer of to-d-ay

will convey to him a reply. From what has heretranspired, it is reasonable to infer that the positionof tbe Administration admits of no compromise, itbeing folly satisfied that the Island belongs to theUnited States. On Saturday, a very long cipherdispatch, from the British Minister at Washington toLord John Russell, went through 4his city by tele-graph on Saturday evening, to intercept the Quebecoutward-boun- d steamer at Farther Point. That dis-patch, it is conjectured, has reference to this troublewith British Columbia.

The New Califwraiat Line.The JV. Y. Tribune of Sept. 5th says The Mer-

chants and Miners' line of steamships to Californiavia Nicaragua, issue their first advertisement to dayin which they announce that the steamship KeyitoneSlate will sail from this port on the 6th of Octoberfor San Juan del Norte.
