Title of Position: Reserve Management and Research Intern

Description: The reserve research and management interns (5) will assist reserve staff and visiting researchers with invasive species management, ecological restoration, research, and general reserve management at the McLaughlin Reserve

(nrs.ucdavis.edu/McL/index.html). Interns will participate in diverse projects including the removal and control of invasive species, collecting and managing data for experiments on invasive species, pollinators, grassland ecology, and climate change, mapping with GPS and managing geographic data with ArcGIS, propagating and planting of native species, and assisting with general reserve management tasks such as fencing, irrigation, and trail maintenance. Although interns will frequently work as a team, individual interns may have primary responsibility for particular projects. At least one intern will assigned as the primary field technician on a study of the effects of climate change and atmospheric nitrogen deposition on the ecology of serpentine grasslands. Most research and management projects are centered on plants and insects in grassland ecosystems. Applicants should have a strong interest in botany, plant ecology, and plant identification. We are looking to assemble a team with diverse and complementary skills, so do not hesitate to apply if you have only a subset of the desired skills and education.

Description: You will spend approximately 35% of your time working with the re-vegetation and exotic plant management crew. This involves treating weed infestations by hand pulling and spraying and re-vegetating areas which are barren due to trampling. Approximately 25% of your time will be spent working alongside the wildlife technician to monitor peregrine falcons, hummingbirds, and prairie dogs. The remainder of the time may be spent working with air quality equipment, sound monitoring, helping with erosion studies and/or mapping breaks in the park’s boundary fence.

Location: Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, USA

Training: Bryce Canyon will offer formal training in safety and herbicide application. Working alongside the wildlife staff there will be informal opportunities to learn about sampling and surveying methods for hummingbirds, peregrine falcons, and prairie dogs.

Title of Position: Native Trout Conservation Intern

Description: You will participate as a team member for the Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Program at Yellowstone National Park, assisting with cutthroat trout preservation and restoration, removing nonnative fish, monitoring lakes and streams for fish, macroinvertebrates, and/or water quality. You'll also conduct applied research aimed at conservation of cutthroat trout, and assist with lab processing of samples, data entry and verification. Title of Position: Fisheries Technician Internship

Description: The primary responsibilities with this position revolve around operating a remote fish weir to enumerate adult salmon escapement. Duties include collecting limnological field data such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, light penetration profiles; collect zooplankton and phytoplankton samples, collect water samples for nutrient analysis; construct and take down of fish weirs; collect fish scale, length, and weight samples; apply fertilizer to the lake; record field data; operate outboard motor boats on the ocean and lakes;

operate general field camp equipment (pumps, gasoline and propane fueled equipment and power tools). Additionally duties not associated with weir work could include working with Sitka Ranger District staff to help on an assortment of projects. Projects could include goshawk surveys; plant collection; riparian and stream habitat condition surveys; implement watershed and fish habitat improvement projects which may include Large Woody Debris placement in streams; removal of failing log weirs and bridges from old road systems, fly into remote areas by helicopter and float plane, utilizing cabins and field camps; assisting in kid fishing derby and other educational outreach programs. Note: This is a rifle carrying position. ALL canidates will be required to take a drug test and carry a rifle in the field (bear and rifle safety training will be provided).

Title of Position: Weed Control Team Intern/Upland Restoration

Description: You will provide weed control by spraying weeds from an ATV, and assist with the removal of Russian Olive. You will also assist with weed control test plots, and become familiar with use of ArcMap and a Trimble GPS unit to map weeds treated. You will be assisting with installation of research plots and hand irrigation for an upland restoration study. You may assist in data entry into spreadsheets. You may also assist with conducting secretive bird (rail/bittern) surveys, and assist with building, grounds, and vehicle

maintenance as needed. EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: You may have the opportunity for field trips or assisting other agencies as part of the position (possible). Outdoor personal recreation opportunities are abundant with hiking, camping, river rafting, fishing, bird watching.
