increasing role in helping tobring up baby these days.

They are perhaps one of the biggestgroups of unappreciated people – althoughmany would argue that grandmas andgrandads are appreciated far more byfamilies than by the state.

It is estimated that one in three familiesdepend on grandparents for childcare andup to a third of grandparents providefinancial support for their grandchildren.

While charities that campaign forgrandparents’ rights welcome anyrecognition of the vital role they play infamily life, they stress that suchrecognition should be more than a one-off.

Sam Smethers, chief executive ofGrandparents Plus, said: “We need to valuethe role all year round, and not just for oneday.’’

Part of being valued would, of course, befor grandparents to be paid for lookingafter their grandchildren. After all, it’sestimated that the value of their childcareis saving parents £3.9bn a year.

A poll earlier this year by researchers atKing’s College in London andGrandparents Plus found there was hugesupport from grandparents for theproposal that they should be paid forchildcare with 75% of working agegrandparents agreeing.

“It’s often said that grandparents do it forlove not money, and that’s true,’’ said Sam.

“But our survey shows an overwhelmingmajority in favour of being paid forchildcare.’’

A grandparents’ National Insurancecredit comes into force in April 2011,meaning that grandparents who care for achild under 12 for at least 20 hours a weekwill get a credit towards their statepension.

Sam says that although the measure iswelcomed, it won’t make a ‘seismicdifference’ to most grandparents.

Other suggestions to make life better forgrandparents include improving contactbetween children and grandparents whenparents separate and extending the right toflexible working.

This would benefit working grandparents– and there are a substantial number, ashalf of UK grandparents are under 65.

In a bid to make life easier forgrandparents, the charity is looking at acommercial way of recognising themthrough a possible discount card scheme.

“It’d be a bit like an NUS card,’’ said Sam.
