A Guide to Fire Safety for Students. A Short Review.

It's a harsh world for students. Partying, drinking and the occasional essay. These young

people have finally emerged free from a parental blanket of rules and guidelines. So is a

fire safety guide really going to make them think? Answer - probably not. I asked one

friend, a first year accounting student at Kent University, what he knew about fire safety

in his campus block. All he knew was that fire alarms go off every other day at sillyhours in the morning and consequently he wishes they weren't even there!

Okay, so that's quite extreme and only represents one persons view. Nevertheless,

exactly how do you make students take note of key fire safety issues? Tape their eyes

open and make them watch a cringe-worthy safe practice video from the 1980's? Bring

in a fire professional, with whom none of them can relate to, to talk at them? No. I

haven't quite worked out the answer but I think the basic yet pertinent guide from

'Means-of-Escape' could be a good start.

It features 10 major points to highlight key safety issues. Enough points to

hammer home the fundamental information, without overwhelming a student reader

who switched off at the word safety. The guide has a very back to basics feel to it

but this is perfect for the targeted readership. Each point is hugely relevant and featuresa hard hitting tag line such as They can kill you - and that was just about candles! The

best thing about this guide is that it does in no way patronise it's audience. For example,

it has sections on smoking and drinking but whilst covering the dangers relating to fire,

never once says 'stop smoking' or 'quit drinking'.

The guide finishes on a great line; what you do when youre awake will either

ensure, or threaten your own safety when your asleep. So, if nothing else in the guide

did, that last line should be enough to make a student put down their Pot Noodle and

have a good think about fire safety.

Whilst the concise guide from 'Means-of-Escape' is good, it can improve. Any fire

safety guide that wants to appeal to students must have them in mind throughout. This

means being fully interactive, quoting modern culture, using striking images and a sideorder of sarcasm. Just typing in the words 'Fire safety' on Youtube brings up hauls of

funny yet relevant videos. Okay, so they might not be as hard-hitting as a written guide

but surely they would stay in the mind longer? Another idea is to use cold facts. Facts

about university fires and real students who have been affected by them. This is sure to

make the audience sit up and think.

All in all, the 'Means-of-Escape' student guide is a great little memory jogger. The

sort of things a Mum would be saying if she was there but a whole lot less patronising.

So, I believe I will rethink my tendency to overload plug sockets and maybe even pass

on a copy of the guide to my Kent Uni friend.
