Examples For Optimizing Web Pages
In an effort to make optimizing your web pages more clear, I'm going to
take some real examples of web pages submitted as optimized, but not
totally correct. This is a great teaching moment. It will benefit the
the dealer whose page it is and everyone who reads this.
I will give you the keyword phrase they want to optimize the page for.
Then I will show what isn't quite correct and give you how I would fix it.
I won't show the domain, because I don't have permission from Dealer.
Flashlight Stun Guns
http://www.xxxx.com/stun-guns/flashlight-stun-guns.htmlWe don't want to over-optimize the URL. Google looks at the entire URL,
not just the product or category page. You can see that stun guns appears
twice in the URL. Google would see this as over-optimization. So, this is
the way I would do it. The keywords do not have to be in the same order.
http://www.xxxx.com/stun-guns/flashlights.html
Another issue is that he only has 174 words of content on the page. You
should have at least 700. He also used the exact keyword phrase in the
Meta Title. Use the exact keyword only in the URL and content.
Flashlight Stun Guns may seem like it would be
hard to find LSI keywords for. Let's give it a
try. Let's go to lsigraph.com, and search for
flashlight stun guns. On the right is just a small
portion of the keywords that LSI returns.
The one that jumps out at me is flashlight taser combo. Taser in this
sense means stun gun because Google knows that people use taser and
stun gun interchangeably. You can too. When searched for in Google,
with quotation marks, there's only a little over 2000 results. That is
under the 5000 results I suggest for keyword use.
Since this is a category page, we can't use it in the page title. That has
to remain unchanged. However, we can use it in the Meta Title.
10 million volt ladies stun gun flashlight pink for her
https://www.XXX.com/stun-guns-for-self-defense/slider-stun-guns-
here/10-million-volt-ladies-flashlight-pink-for-her.html
This one is for a product page so, we can optimize in all 4 places: URL,
page title, meta title and content. The URL is not over-optimized but
contains all the keywords in the keyword phrase. You may notice that
stun gun appears twice in the URL. These are in the category and
subcategory pages. If you want to get nit picky, one of the categories
URL could be changed to eliminate one of the stun guns. I wouldn't
bother doing this until you had nothing else to do. In other words, never.
However, he didn't do everything just right. Here's the page title he used.
Slider 10 Million Volt Stun Gun Flashlight Pink For her
This is the URL he sent:
The page title is a little too close to the keyword he's optimizing for and I
would change it. The issue is the Meta Title and Page Title are too similar.
Slider 10 Million Volt Stun Gun Flashlight Pink
He just left off For Her in the Meta Title This is not using LSI keyword.
Read the information about LSI keywords in this Small Report, or
search for it online. Make sure you understand how to use LSI keywords.
Here's what I would do in this instance. Synonyms are not the same as
LSI. However, there are times to use synonyms. If you look for synonym
for flashlight, you will find many. Some are better than others. One
common one is lamp. If we look at the description for the Slider we will
see that besides the 10 million volts, it has 4.9 milliamps. Considering all
that, I would come up with a page title of:
Slider 4.9 Milliamps Pink Stun Device With LED Lamp For WomenAnd for the Meta Title, I would do this:
Powerful Slider Rose Stun Gun Flashlight Combo For Females
Some of this is more art than science. I got a little artistic when I used
Rose as the color. My thinking is that when a woman sees this meta
title in the search engine results, it will attract her more than Pink.
One other thing. He only had 148 words of content. This of course,
needs to be at least 700 words. Google is not going to rank low-quality
pages when it has better options.
If you can't write 700 words on a product, don't fill it with fluff. Its
important that the content is long, but also has quality.
stash canThis keyword phrase is too competitive. Way above the recommended
less than 5000 results.
http://www.xxxx.com/coke-stash-can.html
This is the URL he sent:
Several dealers have sent this type of URL. They send this because they
believe it's more optimized for their keyword. However, this page does not
exist. Yes, you can type or paste that URL and it will go to the product
page, but Google never sees that page. Google sees the correct URL:
http://www.xxxx.com/diversion-safes/can-safes/coke-stash-can.html
Since Google considers the entire URL, so must we and make sure we do
not over-optimize. Looking at the URL above, we see can and safes are
used more that once. If you want to optimize for stash cans, the URL
should be:
http://www.xxxx.com/diversion-safes/can-safes/stash.html
A better keyword to optimize for is coke stash can, It only has a little
over 1400 results. If we do that, then the URL should be:
http://www.xxxx.com/diversion-safes/can-safes/coke-stash.html
affordable stun gunsThis is the URL he sent:
http://www.xxxx.com/stun-guns/trigger/affordable-stun-guns.html
By now, you should be able to spot what is wrong with this URL's
optimization. It has stun guns twice in the URL. The URL should be:
http://www.xxxx.com/stun-guns/trigger/affordable.html
The keyword phrase, affordable stun guns, is still in the URL. Remember,
the words do not have to be in the exact order.
He also only has 78 words of content. Way short of the minimum 700.
The keyword choice is good. Only has 1740 results in Google.
stun gun combo
https://www.xxxx.com/stun-guns/flashlight/combo.html
The URL is fine. It's not over-optimized. The problem is with the page
title and the Meta Title.
This is the URL he sent:
The page title is Flashlight Stun Gun Combo. The Meta Title is Where
can I buy flashlight stun gun combo?
It's not enough to just add words to a keyword phrase. Google can see
through that. That's why you need to use LSI keywords or at least
synonyms. Remember, the only place you should use the exact keyword
phrase is in the URL and a couple of times in the content.
Before I get into correcting the page title and the Meta Title, let's talk
about the keyword phrase he used - stun gun combo When we search
on Google using quotation marks to get the number of web sites using
that exact keyword, we see that "stun gun combo" has 7,100 results.
That's not too bad, but it is over the recommended 5000.
A better and more relevant keyword is flashlight stun gun combo. It only
has 2,740 results. Much easier to rank for.
The page title could be Flashlight Stun Gun Combination or Stun Gun
With Integrated Flashlight or Stun Gun Plus Flashlight or Combined
Flashlight and Stun Gun. One not used could be used in Meta Title.
Lipstick Stun Gun
The URL submitted was:
http://www.xxxx.com/stun-guns/lipstick-stun-guns/stun-master-
with-flashlight-purple.html
This is a product page and the keyword chosen would be better used on
a category page. You need to think about eventually optimizing all your
pages. If you use lipstick stun gun now on a product page, what are you
going to use on the category page?
Another reason not to use it, now or later, is the number of search
results it gets - 88,800. Way too competitive.
Using lsigraph.com, there are several LSI keywords we could use: lipstick
taser for sale, lipstick taser gun, stun master lipstick stun gun, lipstick
stun gun for sale, buy lipstick stun gun. You could also add the color to
whatever keyword you finally use. This would make it easier to optimize
each color of lipstick stun gun. This also applies to any other product
that has multiple colors. You could use the same LSI keyword or mix it
up for different for lipstick stun gun product pages. Each page on your
website needs to have different URL, Page Title and Meta Title.
Does Bear Spray WorkThe URL submitted was:
http://www.xxxx.com/why-is-personal-safety-important/bear-repellents/
does-bear-spray-work.html
http://www.xxxx.com/does-bear-spray-work.htmlThis is another case of creating a URL, to optimize the web page, that
does not exist on your website. Google will not see it when they spider
your website. The correct domain is:
Now we need to make sure the URL is not over optimized. You can see
that bear is in the URL twice. So, to correct that, we change the page
URL to: does-spray-work.html, removing the word bear.
The page title is Environmentally Safe Bear Spray, which is not that
relevant to the keyword we are trying to optimize. A more relevant
page title is - Is Bear Spray Effective.
Meta Title needs to be changed. It's Guard Alaska Bear Spray. We want
to optimize for Does Bear Spray Work, not Bear Spray or Guard Alaska
Bear Spray. So, the Meta Title needs to be more relevant. An example
would be Stop Bears At A Distance. This has curiosity factor. We don't
use spray and the word Stop implies that you have a method that works.

Best Black Glass Breaker Tip Tactical Pen Flashlight for Self Defense
The URL submitted was:
This is another case of creating a URL, to optimize the web page, that
does not exist on your website. Google will not see it when they spider
your website. The correct domain is:
https://www.xxxx.com/personal-protection/best-black-glass-breaker-
tip-tactical-pen-flashlight-self-defense.html
But first, let's look at the keyword phrase. It's definitely longtail, but
it's too long. It just won't generate enough traffic.
After doing a few searches, with quotation marks, in Google, I came up
with tactical pen flashlight glass breaker or pen flashlight glass breaker.
Both have the right search results. He can work the other keywords in
the page title or meta title and the content.
He used the same keyword phrase in the URL, the page title and the
meta title. Those 3 have to be different. He should also use a different LSI
or synonym on an H3 sub-head in the content. Plus, he only has a little
over 100 words of content on the page; way under the suggested 700.
Possible URL is:
https://www.xxxx.com/personal-protection/tactical-pen-flashlight-
glass-breaker.html
Hopefully, this report will help you to better understand how to optimize
your web pages. This is the first phase of a two phase SEO plan. The
second phase is getting the right links to your website. However, you
shouldn't do the second phase until you complete the first phase. It's
important to send links to optimized pages.
Always remember to complete all these tasks:
1. Keyword Research - Find keyword that has less than 5000 search
2. Use the exact keyword (no extra words) in the URL and a couple of
3. Use a different version of the keyword for Meta Title, Page Title and
Sub-Headers in the content.
4. Have at least 700 words of content. The average number of words
for web pages in the TOP 10 results is 1736 words.
5. Do not use H1 tags. The page title is automatically an H1. Do not
use H2 tags except in those circumstances when you change the
Page Title and it doesn't include the product name. If you do that,
you can use the H2 tag in the name of the product under the Page
TItle. Use H3 or H4 tags on the sub-headers in your content.
6. Make at least one H3 sub-header in the content. You can do more
than one if you want including using H4 tags.

results in Google using quotation marks. Then choose a few LSI or
synonym keywords relevant to your main keyword phrase.
