Examples of less good practice

Example 1Sophisticated mathematics done poorly

Example 1aThe student lacks understanding of “r”, the correlation coefficient. The value of “r” for the data below is -0.029. This implies no correlation and, therefore, it is not valid to use the calculated linear regression line to extrapolate and predict results for the next season.

Example 1bThe expected values do not add up to 100. The range of values taken for x is too small.

Example 2Poor scales

Example 2aThe scales on the y-axis are set out in calculator notation. There is nothing on the x-axis at all.

Example 3Inaccurate data

The data cannot be read accurately from the bar graph.

Example 5Poor data collection

Example 5aThe quantity of data is adequate, the organization of it, as presented in this form, is not appropriate for analysis.

Example 5bThe data here is lacking both in quality and quantity.

Example 6Poor mathematical understanding

The student shows no real understanding of percentages.

Example 7Inappropriate mathematics

Example 7aThe student does not understand the regression used. It is difficult to understand why the student has attempted to fit a quadratic regression equation to the data. No explanation of the techniques used has been provided, and no attempt has been made to interpret the results within the context of the task. It is doubtful if the student has any real understanding of the significance or value of the results shown.

Example 8No plan given

The task is stated but is vague, and no plan is described.

Example 9Poor discussion of validity

This is an example of the type of discussion on validity that is not recommended.
