November 2016
From the Principal’s desk
“Opportunities created today, inflame the intellect to think critically to reach
excellence.”
Dear Parents,
November started on a positive note with the visit from the University of Glasgow to
launch the research collaboration with ITARI on 2nd November. With education
undergoing a huge transformation as a result of the digital revolution, knowledge
obsolescence is galloping at a speed beyond estimate, leading to a future that is volatile,
uncertain, chaotic and ambiguous. Therefore schools like Indus have to prepare
students for future careers and jobs that don’t exist today. The Schools of the Future
was thus conceptualized by Lt Gen Arjun Ray, who has envisioned that the immediate
need for schools is to go beyond the mandate of the curriculum. Preparing students
with the 21st century critical competencies thus becomes the need of the hour. This can
only be achieved through a tripartite collaboration between industries, schools and
universities. Developing an entrepreneurial mindset becomes the axis of this
meaningful collaboration.
To this end, a research collaboration between ITARI and the University of Glasgow has
been signed. Mrs. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CMD Biocon Ltd was the keynote speaker
for this event. In her keynote address, Mrs. Shaw emphasized on kindling curiosity as
this is the prerequisite to gaining knowledge. She explained how, this in turn, will help
in the collaboration between academia, schools and the corporate sector. A delegation
from the University of Glasgow, headed by the University Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Anton
Muscatelli attended the conference on ‘’Innovation in Education’’ at ITARI. This was
followed by speeches and panel discussions, on the ‘Role of Technology in the Schools
of the Future’ by reputed academicians, authors and thought leaders from IISc
Bangalore and the University of Glasgow, UK.
We opened five days later after the Diwali vacation and the days that followed have
witnessed much.
PYP: The PYP has been a beehive of activities this month. The students have been
practicing for their upcoming Indus Day performances with rigor and dedication. At
the same time, keeping with the commitment of “whole education not at the cost of
academic excellence”, meaningful learning engagements in the classrooms have led to
enduring understanding of concepts planned for the month.
On 16th November, as part of the unit "Treasures in the Past", grandparents of Grade 1
students took them back into time about different aspects in the past like transport,
entertainment, education and infrastructure. They shared some interesting objects like
old silver toys, wooden toys, black and white pictures, camera reels and brass
lampshades. This not only gave them a peek into the past but also helped them see
different perspectives and experiences.
The students of Grade 2 are inquiring into the processes that food goes through as it
travels from the field to the table. In order to gain a better understanding about the
same, they visited Hypercity in the Inorbit Mall on 11th November. This helped them
tune into further inquiry based learning on the Science related concept of ‘Preservation’.
Based on the unit ‘Government Systems’, the Grade 4 students had the opportunity to
visit Vidhana Soudha on November 9th, where students made meaningful connections
with the legislative branch of the government. The assembly hall in all its grandeur has
left a lasting impression on the minds of the students making it a memorable trip and a
good learning experience for the students.
20 students from the PYP participated in the VIBGYOR High, VIVA Inter School
Swimming Championship held on 11th November, at VIBGYOR High School,
Horamavu. It was not only an opportunity to display their swimming prowess but also
an experience to participate in a competition at an inter-school level. We are proud of all
our participants and congratulate our 13 winners. The details are attached in Appendix
4.
PYP students from Grades 3, 4 and 5 and MYP students from Grades 6 to 8 appeared
for the International Benchmark Test (IBT) on 25th November. It is a test that assesses
student knowledge of science and their ability to apply their knowledge to given
contexts. The reports provide schools with detailed information about a student’s
strengths and areas of improvement in a particular subject. It is an excellent skill based
assessment which allows students from all countries to be compared fairly.
Shristuti Srirapu from PYP has done us proud by winning the first runner up position
in the Scholastic Writing Awards 2016, which is an All India Competition. The name of
her award winning story is ‘Another Time’. These competitions serve as a great
platform for young students to hone their written expression skills. Congratulations to
Shristuti and we wish more students engage in such creative work.
On November 14th, PYP celebrated Children's Day with enthusiasm and excitement.
The teachers put together an entertainment that was showcased in an assembly and
regaled the young audience with a variety of performances like song and dance
routines and even a humorous skit. The children were thrilled with the role reversal; to
see their teachers on stage and cheered for them. The student council seized the
opportunity to inform and educate the audience about the history behind the
celebration and highlighted the role of children in building a better tomorrow for
everyone.
The first PYP Agora and Colloquium was held on Friday, November 18th. The Agora
gave a platform for the parents to share their observations and voice their concerns
regarding the PYP programme. The school administration welcomed suggestions and
ideas from the parents towards addressing the same. We thank the members of the
Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) for collating the talking points from parents across
all primary grades.
Grade wise forums that were held in the respective classrooms later in the day ensured
that all the concerns at the grade level were addressed appropriately. In keeping with
our current leadership theme of mindfulness, the Colloquium included a mini
workshop on Heartfulness meditation with Yogic transmission (Pranahuti) by experts -
Swami Viswanathan and Manika Sharma, that focused on reduction of stress, clarity of
mind and progressive development of inner balance, equanimity and harmony.
As part of our ongoing professional developmental for teachers, 13 teachers from the
PYP attended an online webinar conducted by the Asia Pacific IB Network. The two
main areas they shared were ‘Inside the PYP Classroom’ and ‘Transdisciplinary
Learning’. The experience gained will be shared and presented to the other teachers.
Senior School: It has been a busy time in the Senior School as well. Two of the School’s
significant inter-house competitions – the Fusion Dance and the One Act Play were
conducted as a part of the Children’s Day celebrations on 14th November.
The day’s events unfolded with my address to the students and teachers, where I
conveyed my wishes to the students and reiterated the significance of the special day.
The plays that were showcased by the participants of the four houses exhibited the hard
work they had put in to excel in what they presented. Orion staged Sacrifice by
Rabindranath Tagore, Phoenix, Signs of the Times by D.M. Larson, Pegasus, The
Caucasian Chalk Circle, by Bertolt Brecht and Hercules, The Sneeze by Neil Simon.
The theme for the Fusion Dance Competition was ‘Stop Child labor’. Students, with
the help of a few select teachers had worked on the choreography themselves and
depicted their understanding through movement and expression.
Before we called it a day, our Vice Principal, Mrs. Krishnan shared valuable feedback
with the participants, and announced the positions that each House had secured. The
results are attached in Appendix 1.
In our bid to make our students aware and to sensitize them, the school invited guest
speakers to speak to our students of grades 9 to 12 about Drug Abuse and Sexuality.
The workshops on sexuality were held on 11th and 14th November in different batches.
The students interacted freely with the speakers and discussed several issues.
Our students participated in the eminent ILMUN (Ivy League Model United Nations)
which was conducted from 24th to 27th November. Our students participated
enthusiastically and the students recognized for their performance are mentioned in
Appendix 2.
On our working Saturday on 26th November, we had a professional development
session on Critical Thinking in the Classroom conducted for teachers of Grades 6 to 8.
We also had a book critique session for an exclusive group of teachers where books like
Grit by Angela Duckworth and Alchemist by Paulo Coelho were reviewed. The
students had support classes followed by clubs and sports training on the same day.
The Blue and Green star awards along with certificates were handed out to students
during the MSP morning registration.
A full day Extended Essay session was organized on 12th November for our Grade 12
students. The students benefited immensely by working with their supervisors.
Constant feedback was given and most students were able to achieve their targets.
The after school support has been very effective in the senior school and many day
scholars are also staying back to attend these classes and to take help from their
teachers. The support plans are revised every week and two levels are available for each
subject and the classes are monitored by the Coordinators and the Heads of School
regularly.
Trips: The leadership camp at ISL was organized for our Grade 11 students in three
batches. While the first batch returned on 18th November, the other two batches
commenced theirs on 21st and 28th November respectively. The students have enjoyed
the outbound learning activities and had an opportunity to test their endurance and
physical fitness. It was a great experience for our new students as they realized the
value of team work.
CAS: The Creativity Action Service targets are an ongoing process.
The Pegasus house students continue fostering entrepreneurship with candle making
and vocational training for women’s empowerment. The Singer sewing project is on.
The next step of translating the existing brochures to Kannada is in process, alongside a
plan to invite IICS parents to enroll for training in beauty and sewing courses.
Students of the Grade 11 sold our new range of lip balms during the Diwali sales and it
is a big hit with the students and teachers alike. Encouraged by this trend, the students
have decided to introduce more flavors and continue to sell the balms at the major
school events throughout the year.
The students of Phoenix continue working with the students of Indus International
Community School, for the Leadership Summit. The Grade 11 students are working on
the completion of the Leadership journals and are practicing with the IICS students for
their ILEAD talks for the summit.
We will be having the experts from Jayashree Industries visit the sanitary napkin
project to guide the students about packaging and servicing of the machine.
The students of Hercules house is preparing IICS for the Science Exhibition. The design
phase for the exhibition has been completed and the prototype and experimental phase
is going on. The students are coming up with innovative ideas and bringing them from
paper to reality.
Grade 11 students are working on the art of paper making, and simultaneously are
training the IICS students on how to make recycled paper. The students have
documented their activities through reflections.
This month saw the students of Orion working mainly on the editing and polishing of
the articles that the students of IICS have turned in. The students have begun the next
level of training of the lady staff. Students worked on enhancing the spoken English
skills of the bus wardens. Along with the Ammas who have already been initiated into
the training, five new bus wardens were inducted into the module. Each Amma worked
with one of the three groups. There will be two different levels of training. The Ammas
who have already been trained in basic greetings and introduction have begun training
to engage in basic conversation on a local issue. The Ammas who have joined the
module recently have begun work on basic greetings and introduction.
Boarding: On the 19th of November, the girls in the boarding engaged in an energetic
tug of war. The boys from middle school played cricket while the senior boys were
involved in a pulsating football game. The weekend was rounded off with a very well
earned meal from KFC which they all thoroughly enjoyed. Through all this excitement,
support classes continue to be the focus to raise academic performance.
Sports: In the recently concluded JASE Cup, our students have done extremely well in
the events in which we competed. We congratulate Mr. Pooviah and his department for
training and motivating the students. Our students put up an exemplary performance
and the following students were given the Special Recognition Award.
1. Basketball - Best Player of the Tournament Award: Kshitij Singh, Grade – 12 E
2. Best Athlete Award : Shagun V.K, Grade - 11

Indus football team participated in the national level Parikrama Champions League
(Top 16 teams of India took part) which took place from November 24th to 26th 2016 in
the Bangalore Football Stadium. Out of the 16 teams that took part in the tournament
from all over India, Indus team qualified for semi-finals, and then unfortunately lost to
St. Loyala High School, Goa in the tie breaker. In the match for the 3rd position, Indus
defeated the host team Parikrama and secured 3rd position. The participant list is
attached in Appendix 3.
Placements: Students of Grade 9 were part of a presentation on PSAT/ACT/SAT by
Testrocker on 18th November. Students were given a roadmap for admission into
colleges in the USA. Introductory lessons on career guidance and counseling has
commenced on 24th November, for the students of Grade 10. The placements cell has
also been busy hosting universities like School of Oriental and African Studies,
University of London, York University, Indian School of Business and Finance,
Universidad de Navarra, University of Westminster, OP Jindal Global University to
name a few.
As the PYP prepares for their Indus Day, the Senior School is getting ready and set for
the Annual Sports Day. The middle school students are preparing for the practical
exams and the half yearly paper in English for Grades 6 to 9 and 11.
The two weeks in December promises to be a month in which we will continue with the
balance in academics and co-curricular activities.
