CastagnonePreludio giocoso
Copland Dance Panels
Mahler “Blumine”
BernsteinSymphony No. 1 “Jeremiah”Britt Brown, mezzo-soprano
NOTES FROM MAESTRO HANGEN: “Let’s celebrate the 100th birthday of my teacher, Leonard Bernstein, by doing both his music and the music of composers who were important to him: Copland, Gershwin, Mahler, and a piece by Franco Castagnone that inspired Bernstein when he was still in school. Award-winning mezzo Britt Brown is in the spotlight for Bernstein’s emotional First Symphony, subtitled ‘Jeremiah.’”

BalakirevOverture on Three Russian Folk Songs
KabalevskyCello Concerto No. 2Nathaniel Taylor, cello
TchaikovskySymphony No. 5
“The Russian school of composing is inherently dramatic, tuneful, and colorful. Basking in the familiarity of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Fifth,’ this concert opens with traditional Russian folksongs in a symphonic setting by Balakirev and features a remarkable rising star cellist, Nathaniel Taylor, in Kabalevsky’s dynamic and soulful concerto.”
Saturday, January 26, 2019at 7:30pm
Sibelius Suite from Belshazzar’s Feast, Op. 51
Mahler Symphony No. 1 “Titan”
Also featuring the Indian Hill Music School Student Concerto Competition winner.
“Mahler is back! Gustav writes in such a way that excites today’s musicians and wows audiences with extremes of tenderness, joy, and triumph. Beginning the concert, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ spirited music will warm us up and the winner of Indian Hill Music School’s annual Student Concerto Competition will bring youthful energy to the stage.”

All Brahms:
Hungarian Dances Nos. 3 & 10
Symphony No. 3
Piano Concerto No. 1Ya-Fei Chuang, piano
“Johannes Brahms is the favored composer of many a musician and concert-goer: Classical but Romantic; expressive but stoic; forward-looking but holding fast to old traditions of style. His Third Symphony and the monumental Piano Concerto No. 1 anchor this program with breathtaking guest soloist Ya-Fei Chuang. We’ll begin the concert with a couple of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances to whet the appetite for more!”
Saturday, March 23, 2019at 7:30pm
Vaughan Williams Bucolic Suite
RautavaaraClarinet ConcertoRichard Stoltzman, clarinet
BeethovenSymphony No. 5
“Ta-ta-ta TAHH! Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is so important to musicians and the overall history of classical music. It is THAT important – and to this day it’s as astonishing as it was 210 years ago! Also stunning is the music of Finnish composer Rautavaara: a sonorous, ethereal, atmospheric, and compelling work featuring the world-famous clarinetist, Richard Stoltzman.”
Saturday, April 27, 2019at 7:30pm
Rossini William Tell Overture
Vivaldi Concerto for 4 Violins in B minorAlice Hallstrom, Angel Hernandez, Anabelle Tirado, Susan Jensen, Violins
Elgar Enigma Variations
“Yet another fascinating twist to Showcasing Our Own! Vivaldi’s lively and well-known concerto features four string players from the Orchestra of Indian Hill and Indian Hill Music School faculty. And we’ll bring the concert (and the season) to an end with the exceedingly Romantic music of Sir Edward Elgar – the familiar musical portrayal of many of his friends.”
Happy 100th, Leonard Bernstein!
