AMONG the many fine Old Master Drawings Sotheby's will bring to the market this

summer will be two extremely rare "giant miniatures". Commissioned by a horse-mad 16th century Moravian noble, the newly-discovered drawings would seem to

be among the earliest known depictions of the Lipizzaner horse - a revered breed

developed by the Hapsburg family in the early 1560s, when the finest Arab horses,

newly introduced into Europe, were fused with athletic Spanish horses of Andalucia.

The result was a horse so physically capable it could perform previously undreamt

of balletic moves in the Spanish Riding School, while at the same time carrying its

    masters fearlessly into war.

In the 16th century, at a time when horses were great status symbols, the possession

of horses such as those shown in these drawings must have been the

ultimate symbol of success. As crucial weapons of war, the ownership and mastery of the biggest, most beautiful, rarest and best bred specimens was a great indicatorof power. Many nobles of the day were correspondingly horse-mad, but few so

much so as Jan embera of Buovice, who became Baron of Boskowitz und

Schwarzenburg in 1584, and immediately embarked on building a renaissancepalace in his native Moravia, not far from Brno. This palace he filled with grand

equestrian portraits and reliefs of gods and historical figures. He also commissioned

a series of extraordinary images, painted like miniatures but on a much larger scale,

which seem to represent some of the finest horses in his stables, held by lavishly-

dressed young grooms. Until now, only one of these giant miniatures was known, in

the Albertina Museum, Vienna, but now two more have been discovered, in perfect

condition, in a Scottish aristocratic collection. Estimated at 100,000-150,000 and

60,000-80,000 respectively, both miniatures will be offered for sale at Sothebys

    London on 3rd

    July 2013.
