The Gateway project The Gateway project operates in partnership with Tara Wilson at

Pulse Studios and aims to help at-risk youth in low income

communities to develop their inherent talent in hip-hop without

leaving their communities. This project involves current students and

recent graduates of Fr. Lacombe High School teaching dance to

students at their neighboring school, Holy Family Elementary.

These high school students undergo considerable training in hip-hop

history, lesson pedagogy, first aid training, resume building, anatomy

and professional development before heading into Holy Family to

provide hip-hop lessons to Division 1 and Division 2 participants.

More than a quarter of Holy Family students who are participating in this program are in grades 1-6. Most

have never had the opportunity to register in a formal dance class.

Student Advisory Council gathers at St. Mary’s The Student Advisory Council came together for their first

session on Oct. 18. All thirteen high schools were

represented by a vice principal and three students forming

an excellent cross section of student voice from across the

district.

Topics included student assessment, district calendars for

2019/2020 and a Q&A session with Chief Superintendent,

Gary Strother. Conversation and comments were abundant

as the students provided valuable input on current district

topics. Many thanks to Principal, Steve Petingola for

facilitating the agenda and organizing the session.

Breakfast Program coordinators’ professional development On Oct. 3, in collaboration with Breakfast Club of Canada, AHS, and CBE, CCSD had school-based personnel

attend a session in which they learned about nutrition guidelines, AHS permitting, funding opportunities and

new, healthy recipe ideas. Participants at this first ever event sampled several recipes, including healthy fruit

smoothies, overnight oats, breakfast quesadillas, and pancake/egg sandwiches. A second breakfast session is

planned for November, as well as a PD session for CCSD lunch/canteen coordinators.

2018 Calgary Construction Association Expo Over 800 junior and high school students from CCSD were part of a large group of students who visited the

Calgary Construction Association (CCA) Expo on Oct. 24 at the BMO Centre. Students were exposed to a

myriad of hands-on construction activities from over 40 trades and associations. A feature this year also

included the Next Steps area where students could seek more information about pursuing the trades at school,

through Dual-Credit opportunities or in industry. The CCA graciously provided free admission, bus

transportation and lunch for all participants.

Indigenous curricular connections Elementary Social Studies Consultant, Joanne Anderson and Indigenous Education District Teacher, Ashley

Ruben hosted an Indigenous Curricular Connection Professional Development session which aimed to support

K-9 Data Analysis Day On Oct. 24, Instructional Services held its very first K-9 Data Analysis Day at the Clarion Hotel. All K-9

principals had the opportunity to work with an exam analysis tool to assist them in identifying focus areas to

complete academic goals in their school plan. Four school-based administrators presented an overview of how

they used the Learning Sprints model in their schools to make data informed pedagogy a part of their year-

long academic plan. Subject area consultants were also on hand and provided strategies and suggestions for

principals to address identified areas for improvement. Feedback about this day has been very positive as it

provided principals with a dedicated day to specifically work on their academic goals in a supportive and

collaborative working session.
