  • Located on the prestigious “museum mile” of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the Metropolitan Museum of Art houses the largest collection of art in the US. Established in 1870, the museum’s displays are exhaustive, covering six continents from ancient art to contemporary. Entering from East 82nd and 5th Avenue, visitors generally start with Ancient Egypt on the first floor, making their way to American Art and Arms and Armor, and eventually ending up in the Astor Chinese Garden Court on the third floor. The fifth-floor Roof Garden Café is open throughout the summer into October, providing panoramic views of Central Park. This summer’s exhibitions include paintings from India’s Rajput Courts.

David Zwirner Gallery has been a fixture of the vibrant Chelsea neighborhood by the Hudson River long before Chelsea became cool. Founded in 1993 as a contemporary art gallery by art dealer David Zwirner in SoHo, the gallery relocated to West 19th Street in Chelsea in 2002. In 2012, it opened a branch in London’s Mayfair District, and in 2013, expanded its New York gallery to West 20th Street. The gallery has exhibited the works of Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama and Belgian figurative painter Luc Tuymans. It also represents the likes of German painter Neo Rauch, whose work dabbles in surrealism. Since the opening of the High Line (an abandoned railway track transformed into an elevated park) in 2011, the neighborhood has drawn even more gallery-goers.

  • Another Chelsea art landmark, Tyler Rollins Fine Art is the only gallery in the US that focuses primarily on contemporary art from Southeast Asia. The gallery was founded by Tyler Rollins with the intention of fostering dialogue among artists from Southeast Asia and the West while making art from the region more accessible to Americans. The gallery space, which opened in 2008, is sleek, minimalistic, and ideal for solo exhibitions. Artists from seven Southeast Asian countries are represented, many making their US debut at the gallery. Among those who have exhibited include Malaysian photographer Lee I-Lann, Vietnamese-American multimedia artist Tiffany Chung, and Cambodian sculptor Sopheap Pich.

Established in 1971 by Alanna Heiss, MoMA PS1 held its first exhibition at its current location by Court Square Station in 1976. It was, in many ways, a precursor of what was to become of Long Is land Ci ty. The once- indust r ia l Queens neighborhood is now a thriving arts community with new galleries and studios popping up each year. One of the oldest and largest non-profit contemporary art institutions in the US, MoMA PS1 regular ly features experimental and performance art in addition to traditional media such as painting. This summer’s exhibitions are diverse, from Los Angeles-based Rodney McMillian’s painted bedsheets to Chinese artist Cao Fei’s use of social commentary and pop aesthetics in her videos to comment on changes in Chinese society. Every Saturday during the summer, MoMA PS1 also hosts “Warm Up,” an outdoor music ser ies taking place in the courtyard.

Bushwick may be famous for its street murals, but an increasing number of art galleries are relocating to this up-and-coming Brooklyn neighborhood. When Elle Burchill and Andrea Monti founded Microscope Gallery in 2010 to showcase sound, digital, video, and performance art, they envisioned a space that was not a typical performance venue. The design of the current space in Bushwick, which opened in 2014, is more traditional art gallery and less theatrical — it’s also much bigger than their old 23ft-long space at Charles Place. The gallery features emerging ar t i s t s , inc luding a number of Brooklyn-based artists such as Zach Nader, Joel Schlemowitz, and Sarah Halpern.

Street Art / Public Art Summertime is gorgeous for wandering the city in search of street art. Graff Tours offers walking tours of street art in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn (Bushwick and Williamsburg) for US$20 per person. Street Art Walk also gives tours of Bushwick and Williamsburg for US$25 per person. Or peruse the High Line for a taste of public art. Colorful pop-art-style murals and quirky installations are abundant along the 1.5-mile elevated park in Chelsea, all of which are commissioned by the community organization High Line Art.
