On the origins of the name “Dolo” there are many guesses. Someone asserts that it appears in a papyrus in the 1241. Someone else connect it to the fact that about the second half of the XVth century, Venice sent unwanted people commit an offence. Someone else refer to wealthy families’ names as Dauli or Dotto. And again: Dolo as contraction of the name of the Dandolo Isle where before an oratory rose and then a church.

The huge development of Dolo is originally due to the need of Venice to research new ways out for their economy, this came true by reason of power loss of the Venice trade happened with the decline of the Bisanzio’s Empire, with the assertion of the Turkish power and the opening of trade towards America. After the subjection of Dolo’s territory further to the decline of Padova, Brenta’s waterway is taken much more in consideration as medium of exchanges.

The XVIth century marked the beginning of a considerable development connected to the building of “Molini” ( finished in the 1551-52) and of planning, upkeep and hydraulic works. The use of mills increased trade and wealth, giving a big impulse to the trade of Brenta Coast. Following up the decline of the Republic of Venice under French rule (1791) the Dolo canton was added to Venice District. Since 1815 Dolo belonged of Longobard – Venetian Kingdom, until 1866, year of annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.
