About Visible Learningplus
The Visible Learning research began with a simple question: what impacts student learning the most?
World-renowned professor John Hattie began his quest to find the answer more than 20 years ago. The resulting Visible Learning research is now the world’s largest evidence base on what actually works best in schools to improve learning.
Today, school systems around the world use the Visible Learningplus model of school change to examine their impact on student achievement and create innovation in the learning environment.
}Over the years, we
have been examining the
impact teaching has on
learning through data
collection and analysis,
which has broadened
our perception about
our work. Initially, we
were challenged by
the lack of significant
impact our efforts
were having on various
measures. However,
we are now thinking
systematically about
educational purpose
and striving for a school/
community-wide culture
that is visible to all.~—Damian Duncan,Assistant PrincipalWodonga Primary
School, Victoria

Exclusively from Corwin
Corwin is the exclusive provider of Visible Learningplus seminars, workshops, and consulting in Australia. For 25 years, our mission of “Helping Educators Do Their Work Better” has guided us in finding practical, research-based solutions to the challenges that educators face. We are proud to be your partner in creating school and system-wide impact through Visible Learningplus professional learning.
To understand what Visible Learningplus is, you need to first understand what it is not.
Visible Learningplus is not another initiative to layer on top of other programs and priorities. It is not a one-day workshop, nor is it a simple checklist of strategies.
Rather, Visible Learningplus is a deliberate mindset that shifts the focus from what teachers are teaching to what students are learning. It is a school change process that allows you to cut through the noise of conflicting demands and mandates to focus on the practices that have the highest impact on student achievement. And it is the only school change model based on John Hattie’s Visible Learning research, which is the world’s most extensive meta-analysis project on what works best in raising student achievement.
In short, Visible Learningplus is what you need to make all your other programs and priorities work.
Corwin is proud to be the exclusive provider of Visible Learningplus professional learning in Australia. Since Corwin was founded in 1990, our mission of “Helping Educators Do Their Work Better” has guided us in finding practical, research-based solutions to the challenges that educators face. Visible Learningplus is one of the most powerful, transformative school change models we have ever seen. Corwin is proud to be your partner as you begin your journey into Visible Learningplus.
We can’t wait to hear your stories, learn from you, and welcome you to the Visible Learningplus
community.

Outcomes
Case StudyOxley College, New South Wales
The Context Oxley College is an independent, co-educational school serving students in grades K–12.
Prior to 2012, our staff professional learning program had been somewhat ad hoc, and we had little to show for our investment of time and resources. We were passionate and experienced, yet we did not collect data and our external results showed elements of underperformance.
We saw Visible Learningplus as a way to maximise our impact and improve learning for all of Oxley’s students.
The ProgramIn 2013, we conducted the following Visible Learningplus professional learning:
• Foundation Day Seminar
• Evidence Into Action I
• Evidence Into Action II
We began our journey by going through the entire Visible Learningplus Toolkit during a staff professional learning day, watching the DVD and working through each of the activities.
Attending the Foundation Series workshops was vital. The presentations and resources were outstanding, and the continued connection with the consultants meant continued support. The Foundation Series allows you to walk away with actionable tasks, accountability, and contacts to support you on your journey.
Changes at Oxley We have introduced Visible Learningplus at every level of our school community. Our team leaders meet weekly to work on achieving our targets. They also conduct “learning visits” to their team’s classrooms biweekly. These visits focus on observations of student learning and are the basis for teachers collaborating on lesson planning and reflection. While staff is at different stages, we already have significant evidence of implementation, progression, and success using this model.
The ImpactStudents are more aware of the focus on “learning” rather than being “taught.” There has been a significant shift to active learning, group work, and discussion.
Our teachers have opened up their classrooms and are showing an eagerness to learn more about learning and teaching—a huge step forward for some who had been teaching the same way for 27 years! Prior to this, there had not been a culture of sharing and collaboration at Oxley.
We wait eagerly on the new NAPLAN data to be released so that we can start our data analysis and set next year’s targets for literacy and numeracy.
—Kate Cunich, Deputy Head–Academic

needed to put in place
has been the springboard
to our success.~—Kate Cunich, Deputy
Head–AcademicOxley College, NSW
One-Day SeminarsFoundation SeminarParticipants will discuss the most important messages from the Visible Learning research and understand what does—and doesn’t—make a significant difference to student achievement.
Evidence Into Action I for LeadersLearn what evidence you can collect to know if you are having an impact in your school. Participants in this one-day seminar will be introduced to tools and processes for gathering data.
Evidence Into Action II for LeadersOn this second day, participants analyse their gathered evidence to determine school priorities and targets and to develop an action plan for making learning visible.
Visible Learning Into Action I for TeachersIn this seminar, teachers will gather and examine evidence on what is occurring in their classroom, with a focus on understanding the characteristics of visible learners and measuring their impact on students.
Visible Learning Into Action II for TeachersWhat can data tell us about our impact on student learning? In part II of this seminar series, teachers will analyse and share their evidence and create an action plan for moving forward.
Once school teams have developed an action plan through the Foundation Series, educators can dive deeper into various strands of Visible Learningplus with the Inside Series. In these individual seminars, you can focus on the areas of greatest need for your school, based on your implementation plan.
}The ultimate
requirement is for
teachers to develop the
skill of evaluating the
effect that they have
on their students.~—John Hattie
One-Day SeminarsUsing Data to Evaluate Your ImpactHow does data inform decision making? In this seminar, you will learn how to calculate effect sizes and interpret evidence to show impact.
