What is the Excretory SystemThe excretory system, also known as the

The excretory system includes:2 kidneysthe bladder2 uretersthe urethra

Kidneys

Kidneys filter waste out of the blood.Blood enters the kidneys through the renal

artery, and exits out through the renal vein.Any waste collected flows down the renal hilus

to the ureter, and eventually to the bladder.

Page 4: Excretory system

Kidneys Waste is filtered in the glomerulus, found in

the renal cortex of each kidney. Blood stays in the artery, but waste filters

out of the glomerulus into Bowman’s capsule.Waste exits Bowman’s capsule into the urine

collecting duct, which leads to the renal hilus.

BladderThe bladder is where urine is stored until

ready to be excreted.Urine flows into the bladder via the ureters,

and exits out via the urethra. An average adult male bladder can hold 17 fl

oz.

Page 7: Excretory system

BladderThe bladder stretches like a balloon as it fills

with urine. When full, the bladder sends nerve signals to

the brain. To release urine, the external sphincters

relax, opening up the end of the bladder, allowing urine to release.

Excretory DisordersIncontinence: When the body doesn’t have control

of the sphincters, causing urine to leak out.Kidney Stones: When salt and calcium crystalize

in the kidney, which can lead to an infection.Bladder Tumors: Usually caused from smoking,

can lead to difficulty urinating, infection, or hematuria, which is when blood is found in urine.

Polycystic Kidney (PKD): When pockets of fluid form inside one or both kidneys, causing them to irregularly enlarge, and lose the ability to filter blood.
