MINUTES OF THE FOURTH EXECUTIVE COMITTEE MEETING OFTNOA

14th February, 2009,Codissia Hall, Coimbatore.

1. Welcome Address: The President called the meeting to order and welcomed the gathering and reiterated theneed to pursue his theme of Orthopaedic Education.

2. Obituary references:One minute silence was observed after tributes were made to the departed souls Prof.T.K.Shanmugasundaram, Prof. T.S.Xavier, and Prof. C.T.Mannar.

3. Membership :The new members list was read out by the Secretary, Dr. Nalli R Uvaraj. A total of45 new members have been enrolled this year.

4. It was resolved to place the resolutions of the previous three EC Meetings before the General Body forratification.

5. CME Programme, IOACON 2008, Bengaluru.Dr. R. Selvaraj read out the report of the CME Programmeconducted during the IOACON 2008 at Bengaluru.The Committee agreed to Dr. R.Selvaraj’s request to re-imburse the expenses incurred by the non-orthopaedicfaculty member from Chennai for the CME at IOACON 2008, Bengaluru.

6. Fellowship Secretary’s Report:As the Fellowship Secretary was not able to come due to un-avoidablecircumstances, the report was read out by the Joint Secretary, Dr. C. Raja Ravi Varma. He said that Dr. SureshBabu would read the report on behalf of the Fellows at the General Body.

7. Editorial Secretary’s Report: Dr. B. Pasupathy read out the Editorial Secretary’s report. He mentioned thevarious members inducted into the Editorial Board.

8. Discussion on Medal Paper selection: Dr. P.V.Jayasankar, Vice President and Chairman of the ScientificCommittee expressed certain difficulties while arriving at the selection for Medal Papers, particularly Prof. P.Dhanarajan Medal. He felt the need to redefine the existing criteria and provide a new set of regulations. ThePresident suggested that the Vice president, Secretary and Joint Secretary would analyse and bring out therequired reforms to the existing rules. The General Body could be informed about the same, seek the permissionand enforce from 2010 TNOACON onwards. Dr.Nalli.R.Uvaraj also suggested that he would get in touchwith Prof.P.Dhanarajan in this regard and seek a few clarifications on redefining the criterias for the medal.

9. As regards the medal papers it was resolved once again that the Judge’s decision shall be final and the bestamong the available presentation shall qualify for the medal.

10. Discussion on Dr.N.S.Narasimhan Orator :It was informed by the Secretary that Prof. A. Sreenivasa Raohad been selected for the TNOACON 2010, Prof. N.S. Narasimhan Oration and the organizers of the saidConference were also made aware of it.

11. Prof. T.K.Shanmugasundaram Mid Year CME :As decided in the previous EC meeting it was decided to goahead with the Mid Year CME program in memory of late Prof. T.K. Shanmuga Sundaram. Dr. Sugavanamand Dr. Jaikish were requested to work out the logistics and modalities for the conduct of such CME. ThoseCenters which are willing to conduct shall be given the chance initially.

12. Treasurer’s Report:Dr. T.R.Ramesh Pandian read out the Annual Financial Report. The Secretary broughtout the financial position of the current year.

Dr. P. V. Jayasankar suggested increase on the funds from the Conference Organisers.After discussion it wasdecided to continue with the present contribution of 2 lakhs as the revision of the contribution was done onlya year back.

13. Ethics Committee:The Ethics Committee was formally formed with Prof. P.V.Vijayaraghavan, in the capacityof Past president and as representative from Chennai, Dr. Chidambaram representing Madurai ad Dr. Samsonfrom Trichy.

14. Shuttle and Tennis Awards, TNOACON.It was resolve that all awards including the Shuttle and TennisAwards shall be presented at the Valedictory Function.

15. The meeting was closed with a Vote of thanks by the Secretary.

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING OF TNOACodissia Hall, Coimbatore, 14.02.2009

The Annual General Body Meeting of the Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association was called to order by thePresident, Prof. P.V.Vijayaraghavan. He welcomed the gathering.

Obituary references:The passing away of Prof.T.K.Shanmugasundaram, Chennai, Prof. T.S.Xavier, Chennai, Prof. C.T.Mannar,Chennai , Dr. Mohandas Gandhi, Madurai and Dr. Sarangapani of Puducherry were condoled in themeeting with Prof. K.C.Ramaswami, Prof. R.H.Govardhan and Dr. Shanmuganathan offering condolences.A minute silence was observed in memory of the departed souls.

Achievements by Members:Dr. Nalli R Uvaraj, Secretary, read out the various achievements by the distinguished members as follows:The Association is proud of the achievements of some of its members in the past year. Our senior memberProf. A.Subramaniam was honoured during the Inaugural function of OASISCON 2008 held at Puducherry.Senior members Prof..A.J.Selvapandian and Prof.K.Sriram, Chennai, were conferred the HonoraryFellowship of the Indian Orthopaedic Association during the IOACON 2008 at Bengaluru.Prof. A. Devadoss, Madurai has been awarded the Degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) by TheTamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R Medical University, for significant contributions in the field of Orthopaedics.Prof.Mayilvahanan Natarajan of Chennai was awarded D.Sc (Hons) by the Madras University.He hasalso been awarded the Wockhart Award and conferred the FRCS Degree.Dr.S.Rajasekaran of Coimbatore is currently the President of World Orthopedic Concern and the Associationof Spine Surgeons of India. He is also the Chairman of Trauma Section of APOA and the Representative forIndia in the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine. Dr.S.Rajasekaran was awarded theEuroSpine Award for 2008 for his research work on disc nutrition and differentiation of healthy, ageingand degenerated discs.Dr.Nalli.R.Uvaraj of Chennai had his publication titled “Surgical Management of Ununited fractures ofpatella “ in the Injury , August 2006 issue recognised at the WIROC 2008 at Mumbai.Dr.K.Sekar of Tirunelveli has won the Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand Award for his continuedwork on Uric acid and its effects.The IOA-WOC-SICOT Fellowship 2007 was awarded to Dr.P.V.Thirumalai Murugan, Madurai, and theIOA-WOC-SICOT Fellowship 2008 was awarded to Dr.Ashok S.Gavaskar, Chennai.. Dr.I.Geethan, MadrasMedical College, Chennai secured the third place in the All India Best Resident Competition the WIROC2008, Mumbai.Dr.M.Parthasarathy of Chennai has been delivering public awareness lectures on various orthopaedicproblems and has taken up planting trees to make the environment more clean and green. He has won thefollowing awards :City Of Angels award and Green Ambassador award.

Secretary’s report. Dr. Nalli R Uvaraj, Secretary, presented the annual report.Membership:Presently we have an imposing strength of 1081 Life Members and 90 Associate Members inour fold. Around 48 of our members have become Life Members of the Indian Orthopaedic Association lastyear.Academic activities: Tamil Nadu has always been a front runner in the field of academics and our Associationhas always maintained the drive for furthering the knowledge of its members and we had 14 continuingmedical education programmes and Conferences conducted under it’s auspices in the past one year.

Ratification of new life members:The Life Membership of 45 newly enrolled members was ratified.

Ratification of the resolutions of the fourth executive committee meeting:Dr. C. Raja Ravi Varma, Joint Secretary read out the minutes of the fourth executive meeting.Salient among them being,a) “Review of the existing criteria for medal papers- Dr. P. V. Jayasankar, Vice President and Chairman,Scientific Committee brought out certain issues pertaining to the criteria for selecting papers for MedalSessions particularly for the Prof.P. Dhanarajan Medal for Innovative Orthopaedics. President suggestedthat the Vice president, Secretary and Joint Secretary shall confer to bring out necessary refining of theexisting rules/criteria for the already existing ones.”The General Body was informed of the same, seeking its permission to enforce it from theTNOA CON 2010 onwards.

b) “In all Medal Paper sessions, the Judges decision shall be final and the best among the available papersshall be selected for the Medal”The General Body passed the resolution.

c)”A mid year CME programme was to be organised in memory of Prof.T.K.Shanmugasundaram”Prof. R.H.Govardhan suggested that the CME could include single case presentations from persons whoare working in Medical Colleges and Rural areas along with one or two Guest Lectures. Dr. Selvam fromCoimbatore and Dr. M. Parthasarathy from Chennai suggested that the Prof. TKS Gold Medal session toobe shifted to the Mid Year CME. This was reiterated by Prof. A. Devadoss who felt the Guest Lectures weregood and hence the Medal Session could be shifted to the Mid Year CME. Dr. Vansaekar mentioned it wasa privilege to have the Prof. TKS Medal in the Main Conference. At this juncture in view of the dividedopinion a referendum was sought from the members. The majority of members felt that the Prof. TKSMedal shall persist in the Main Conference.

d) “The Ethics Committee of the TNOA was formally initiated with the following members:Dr. P.V.Vijayaraghavan (Chennai), Dr.M. Chidambaram (Madurai),and Dr. Samson (Trichy).

e) “All medals including those for Shuttle and Tennis may be distributed at the valedictory function”Dr. Major. Kamalanathan and Dr. Kuthaleswaran felt that the awards should be maintained to bedistributed at the General Body Meeting. Dr. R. Selvaraj felt that the association was an academic body andthough sports was and has been an integral and welcome part of the conference it must be given away atthe Valedictory Function. Dr. Chidambaram strongly felt that the move was not congenial for thesportspersons visiting the conference and could jeopardize comradeship. The President pleaded that themove could bring crowds to the valedictory function which now-a-days is being poorly attended andsuggested that if time was a factor the valedictory function could be slated for at about 12 noon in theafternoon. Dr. R. Selvaraj reiterated that he did not mean to differentiate academics from sports but onlyrequested that the sentiments of the majority of people be respected.At this juncture the President conducted a referendum in which the majority of the members felt that theawards for both the Shuttle and Tennis tournaments may be shifted to the Valedictory function along withall other awards.

Ratification of the resolutions of the four EC meetings:Dr. Nalli R Uvaraj read out the various resolutions passed in the previous four meetings which was passed.Prof. R.H.Govardhan requested that one of the representatives form the Indian Orthopedic Associationmay be invited to the Conference as was done with the OASIS.Prof. A. Devadoss insisted that quality of papers should be ensured. Dr. P.V.Jayasankar mentioned that theVice president and Joint Secretary ensured the quality of papers for which various parameters are takeninto consideration and thus only papers with good quality are being selected for the Medal Sessions. WhileProf. R.H.Govardhan felt that the judge’s decision must be final, Dr. S. Ramesh Babu reiterated that sincea committee was there to scrutinize the papers to be presented based upon a fixed criteria and since thepresentors put in a lot of effort the Medal must be awarded. With Dr. Parthasarathy and Dr. S.Natesanechoing the views in favour of the Judges decision being final, the President left it to the members for areferendum.The majority of the members felt that the Medal must be given and not be with-held for any reason.

Report in CME programme in IOACON 2008:Dr. R. Selvaraj read out the report mentioning the essence of the theme “Aging Bones – Orthopaedic challenges”and the wide appreciation and good attendance in the CME held during IOACON 2008 at Bengaluru.

Fellowship Secretary’s report:Since the Fellowship Secretary Dr. Deen Mohd. Ismail could not attend the conference due to un-avoidablereasons, Dr. C. Raja Ravi Varma, Joint Secretary read out the report.Dr.M. Chidambaram suggested that the Certificates for the Fellows too may be given at the Valedictoryfunction which was agreed upon.Prof. R.H. Govardhan suggested that Executive Commitee members should be excluded from applying forForeign Fellowships. Dr. S. Ramesh Babu felt that since the EC Member were doing a honorary job and sinceno special marks are being given for it they shall not be prevented form applying for the Fellowships.Dr.Selvam felt that if there was a tie then an EC member shall give way. Dr. R. Selvaraj felt that since ECmembers were also basically Life Members they should not be prevented from applying for Fellowships.The President then declared that it has been unanimously accepted to let the EC members also apply forFellowships as any other member.

Report by travelling Fellows:Dr. Nalli R Uvaraj , TNOA Foreign Fellow 2006 and Dr. Suresh Babu representing the TNOA Inland Fellows2008 read out their respective reports and shared their experience.

Editorial Secretary’s report:Dr. B. Pasupathy read out the editorial report. He stressed the need for sending articles in good number aswell as on time. To ensure indexing of the journal he detailed the formation of the Editorial Board. ThePresident requested Editorial Secretary to intimate the authors, the status of their articles.As regards the increase in the contribution towards Journal fund, the General Body did not agree to it andthe contribution of Rs.100/- remains.

Treasurer’s report:The statement of the financial position and expenses of the association was distributed to the members andthe GB passed it.

TNOACON 2009:The Organizing Secretary Dr.S.G.Thirumalaisamy read out the report and acknowledged the support ofeveryone concerned.

TNOACON 2010:The Organising Secretary of the TNOACON 2011, Dr. Ramakrishnan detailed the arrangement made forthe TNOA Conference for 2010 at Kourtallum. He also offered free registrations for three lucky dip winnersselected at the GB.

TNOACON 2011:Dr.M. Chidambaram staked the claim for TNOACON 2011 for Madurai and it was unanimously accepted.

Election Results:The results of the Elections for various posts were announced by the Secretary. The following members wereelected unopposed for the following posts:Dr.Pughazhenthi, Madurai -Vice President,Dr.S. Muthuraman, Tenkasi- Editorial Secretary,Dr. Antony Vimalraj, Chennai and Dr.N.B. Thanmaran, Chennai – EC members from Chennai.As no one had filed nominations for the Fellowship Secretary’s post, Dr.S.Karunakaran who had written tothe TNOA expressing his desire to function as the Fellowship Secretary was accepted unanimously. SimilarlyDr. M.N. Karthi was elected un-opposed for the post of EC Member, Madurai.

Distribution of Prizes for Shuttle and Tennis:The Winners and runners-up of the Tennis and Shuttle tournaments were distributed by the President,TNOA.

Any other matter with permission of Chair:Dr. Sekar, Thirunelveli, requested the TNOA Executive to probe possibilities of increasing Guides for PhDProgrammes.Dr. Sivakumar suggested reduction of CME to half a day so that rest of the day and the next day could bemade up for one and half days of Conference.

Obituary references:

Prof. T. Radhakrishnan, Professor of Orthopaedics, Annamalai University passed away after a brief illness on the 5th ofMarch 2009 at Chennai. The Secretary and Joint Secretary paid their last respects on behalf of the TNOA at hisresidence. A minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

Editorial Secretary’s report:Dr. S.Muthuraman informed the members that he had gone through the various Web sites to find out the modalitiesfor indexing the TNOA Journal. He handed over a copy of the same to all members. He also said that he had a goodresponse from all the Editorial Board Members. Having received only two articles thus far he requested if the lastdate for receiving the articles could be advanced further. The Secretary informed that he would publish it in theNews Letter.

Fellowship Secretary’s Report:The Fellowship Secretary could not attended the meeting due to personal commitments and hence Dr. Nalli RUvaraj informed the meeting on his behalf that Dr. B. Pasupathy would be leaving for Germany for the secondTNOA Foreign Fellowship in July 2009.

Treasurer’s report:Dr. N.B.Thanmaran, Treasurer , TNOA said that the previous Treasurer had not handed over any report or followup of the previous year’s financial matters and he had discussed with the Secretary regarding the financial matters.He detailed the grants given to the various CMEs. Dr. Selvaraj requested the Treasurer to complete the financialtransactions and auditing before the financial year to avoid tax. Dr.P.V.Vijayaraghavan requested the Secretary tohand over the copy of the approved CMEs to the Treasurer to prepare the necessary grants. Dr. C. Raja RaviVarma also requested that the traveling details could be obtained from the various Members before their departureso that necessary cheque payment can be made during the meeting as is done in the IOA. Dr. P.V.Jaysankar expresseddeep regrets that the previous Treasurer had not provided appropriate financial positions during the EC meetingsand felt it should not be repeated this year too. He requested the new Treasurer to come with all details regardingthe financial position during EC meetings. Since the EC member from Chennai had been deputed to help theSecretary in financial matters, the House requested the Secretary to chart out the exact role of such a member. TheTreasurer further mentioned the present financial position in detail.

Report by Organising Secretary, TNOACON 2009:Dr. Thirumalai Swamy read out the report. In all there were 340 delegates attending the CME programme and 570delegates attending the Main Conference. There were 140 papers presented by members. The faculty membersconsisted of 30 national and 13 international speakers. He mentioned the difficulties he had to face in conduct of theconference and also apologized for the shortcomings during the conference. The association was thanked for givingthe opportunity to the Coimbatore Orthopaedic society to conduct the conference.Dr. Selvaraj requested for the list of the defaulters of Sponsorship to be sent to the TNOA. Dr. Kanagasabai’s letterwas discussed in detail. Prof. P.V. Vijayaraghavan felt a response shall be sent to Dr. Kanagasabai. At this junctureDr. P.V.Jayasankar expressed concerns over the dwindling attendance by our own members during importantsessions like the lecture by the President IOA and felt this should also be incorporated in the reply to him.Dr. Thirumalai Swamy presented a sum of Rs. Two lakhs, seventy one thousand and six hundred (Rs.2,71,600/-)only as the contribution from TNOACON 2009, Web Maintenance charges and Journal fund. Prof. P.V.Vijayaraghavan said that a small sum be paid to the IOA from the State Chapter.It was decided that TNOA wouldsend Rs. 5000/- towards such fund to the IOA. As the President during the TNOACON 2009, Prof. P.V. Vijayaraghavanwanted to place on record the wonderful work done by Dr. Thirumalaiswamy and his team during the TNOACON2009.

Report by Organising Secretary, TNOACON 2010:Dr. S. Ramakrishnan read out the report and detailed the various steps taken with regards to the TNOACON 2010.The topic for CME was to be Complications in Orthopaedics. The house felt it would be too elaborate and difficultto cover in one day and hence it was decided to focus on complications in a specific area. It was also decided tocontinue with the Workshops. The Org. Secretary also requested for approval of the reduction provided in the feestructure as a special gesture for this TNOACON 2010 only which was approved. The previous year’s fee structureshall be followed for future Conferences.

Dr. N.S.Narasimhan Oration:As was already decided during the EC meeting at Tirunelvali on 21st December 2008 Prof. A. Srinivasa Rao ofHyderabad shall be the Dr.N.S.Narasimhan Orator which the EC approved.

Guidelines for conduct of TNOACONs:The Secretary circulated the guidelines to be followed strictly while conducting TNOACONs to maintain uniformityand avoid inadvertent neglect of protocols. All the members were requested to go through it and send in their feedbacksto the Secretary before the next meeting regarding any additions/deletions.

Academic activities of TNOA and sanction of Grants:Secretary read out the list of academic activities and requested sanction for award of grants to various CMEs.Dr.P. V. Vijayaraghavan wanted to know if part of the funds for the CMEs conducted under the auspices of the TNOAcould be given as a prior installment. Dr. Pugalenthi felt it would be better if it is handed over fully at the inaugurationof the CME. It was also resolved that in future a letter and a copy of the brochure could be sent in advance to theSecretary who would approve it and once the approval is given the funds could be released by the treasurer.There was also a plea for considering the CME hour as credited hours. To another query the Secretary said the TNOAhad enough funds to provide for more CMEs conducted under the auspices of TNOA.

Report on EC meetings of OASIS and IOA:1) EC Meeting – OASIS was held on 5th April, 2009 at Bengaluru. It was attended by Dr.Nalli.R.Uvaraj, Secretary ,TNOA and Dr.C.Raja Ravi Varma, Joint Secretary, TNOA.There was a request to decide on the senior member fromTamil Nadu to be honoured during OASISCON 2009 at Cochin.The state chapters were requested to invite the SecretaryGeneral and President of OASIS to the state annual meetings. The state secretaries were requested to submit the latestupdated list of life members of their state. There was a request to include the announcement of OASISCON 2009,Kochi and OASISICL 2009, Puducherry in the State Newsletters and to provide a link between the OASIS Website andTNOA website..2) The Centre State Relation Committee Meeting of IOA was held on 2nd May 2009 at the IOA House , New Delhi.Itwas attended by Dr.C.Raja Ravi Varma, Joint Secretary, TNOA who presented the state’s activity report. In the agendafor report on President’s theme there was a mention Polio detection camp at Trichy conducted on the 26th of January,2009. Dr. Ashok N Johari , President elect , IOA detailed his plans for the coming year’s theme which he described as“BETTER PATIENT CARE THROUGH EDUCATION AND RESEARCH”. It was decided to project the theme in allconference brochures. The last date for submission of the state reports for the Dr. A.K.Gupta Trophy for best chapter,IOA was 31st October 2009. All members requested IOA to make life membership of State Chapters mandatory forbecoming life members of IOA to which the President, IOA agreed and promised to take action in the regard.3)The EC meeting, IOA was held on 3rd May 2009 at New Delhi. It was attended by Dr.P.V.Jayasankar, PresidentElect, TNOA (Fellowship Secretary, IOA) and Dr.P.V.Vijayaraghavan, Past President, TNOA (State Representative,IOA)

Felicitation of Senior member at OASISCON 2009: As regards the felicitation of a senior member from the State atthe OASISCON 2009 the names of Prof. R.Venkatakrishnan, Prof. A.J. Selvapandian and Prof. S. Soundarapandianwere discussed. Decision will be taken after ascertaining the seniority of the respective members and also the healthstatus for them to travel to Cochin.

OASISCON 2010 : Dr. P.V. Vijayaraghavan said that Dr. A.Rajamani expressed his difficulty in conducting the OASISCON2010 at Madurai due to the ensuing TNOACON 2011. Hence, he requested Chennai to conduct the OASISCON 2010with himself as Chairman , Dr.P.V.Vijayaraghavan, Co-Chairman and Dr. R.H Govardhan as Org Secretary. He furthersaid that the OASIS ICL 2011 will be conducted by Madurai.

Report by Zonal EC Members:Dr. Jaikish Zonal representative, Central Zone read out his report and detailed the preparations of the upcoming CMEon Paediatrics on 7th June 2009 in Tiruchi.Dr. P.V.Jaysankar felt that the appeal requesting members to send donations for Prof. TKS CME could have beenavoided and in future EC permission may be obtained before publishing such items concerning the TNOA.Dr M.Chandrasekaran Zonal representative, East zone submitted his report. There was one CME programme(Mayiladuthurai,26-04-2009) and a monthly meeting (Thanjavur, 29-03-2009) conducted.Dr.M.N.Karthi zonal representative of Madurai informed the meeting of the Arthoroscopy CME to be conducted byGovt. Rajaji Hospital, Madurai on 4th July 2009.The President,and Secretary TNOA were invited for the CME.Dr. Nalli R Uvaraj requetsd all members to send their respective reports between October 2008 to September 2009 forreporting to IOA.

TNOACON 2009

The 42nd Annual Conference of Tamilnadu Orthopaedic Association organized by Coimbatore Orthopaedic Societywas held in Codissia Hall, Coimbatore during 13th to 15th February 2009. The CME programme was conducted on13.02.09 which was attended by 395 delegates. Theme of the CME was “Clinical Examination and debates inOrthopaedics”. Clinical examination of hip was demonstrated by Prof. Dr. A. Devadoss and that of shoulder wasdemonstrated by Dr David V Rajan and Dr. Clement Joseph. Debates in Arthroscopy, Acute trauma and Spine surgerieswere discussed by 24 faculty members before lunch time.

There were workshops in the afternoon on the following topics:1. Internal fixation of distal radial fractures – Locking distal radial system ( Synthes)2. Internal fixation of acetabular fractures – Matta’s plate ( Stryker)3. Interlocking nailing – Versa tibia & femur Reconstruction Nail ( DePuy)4. Total hip replacement5. Total knee replacement6. Shoulder replacement

The CME ended with 2 live surgeries from Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, Coimbatore, with excellent interactionby the delegates in the venue.

The inaugural function of TNOACON 2009 was conducted in the evening between 6.30pm to 7.30pm which waspresided by Shri. Pongalur. N. Palanisamy, Honorable Minister for Rural Industries, Government of Tamilnadu. Prof.M. Shantaram Shetty, President of IOA was the guest of Honour. Dr. Nalli R. Uvaraj, Secretary, TNOA, Prof. P. V.Vijayaraghavan, President, TNOA, Dr. Nalla G. Palaniswami, Patron of this conference, Dr. S. Natesan, President elect,Mr. Mahali IP, Commissioner of Police, Dr. S. G. Thirumalaisamy, Organizing Secretary and Dr. K. C. Ramaswami,Organizing Chairman, TNOACON 2009 were other dignitaries in the Diaz.The main conference was conducted on 14th and 15th February 2009. The Dr. N.S. Narasimhan Oration was deliveredby Dr. Ashok N Johari, Mumbai and the Dr. M. Natarajan Oration was deliverd by the Past President, TNOA Dr. M.Chidambram. 30 National faculty members and 13 International faculty members participated in this. We had 28 guestlectures in various fields of Orthopedics and Trauma, Medico legal aspects and information and technology. 570 membersattended this conference. There were 140 papers presented in the conference. The following are the categories of paper:

Elaborate hall arrangements were done to conduct three scientific presentations simultaneously. We had 72scientific stall participation by Implant manufacturers, drug companies, hospital suppliers etc,Special Guest Lecture by Mr. Sivakumar, Cine Actor was well received by the audience. There was a cultural programin the eve of 14th February 2009 by Bharata Natya group followed by Banquet Dinner. The Valedictory function wasconducted at the end of the conference in which Medals were awarded for the best scientific papers. Prizes were alsogiven to Tennis and Shuttle tournament winners, which is unique in the TNOACON! President of TNOA Dr. P. V.Vijayaraghavan handed over the Medallion to Dr. S. Natesan, the incoming president in the presence of Dr. Nalli. R.Uvaraj, Secretary of TNOA, Dr. S. G. Thirumalaisamy, Organizing Secretary, Dr. K. C. Ramaswami, OrganizingChairman of TNOACON2009.

The Association’s proposal to have a Midyear CME in memory ofProf.T.K.Shanmugasundaram who passedaway recently came true on 7th June 2009when the First Prof.T.K.ShanmugaSundaram CME on Paediatric Orthopaedicswas held at the Hotel Breeze Residency,Trichy by the Trichy Ortho Club under theauspices of the Tamil Nadu OrthopaedicAssociation.The CME Programme wasinaugurated by Prof.N.Balasubramanian ,Dean, Tiruchi Medical College, in thepresence of Dr.S.Natesan, President, TamilNadu Orthopaedic Association.The LifeTime Achievement Award was presented toProf. Mohamed Farook, Senior Orthopaedicsurgeon from Trichy. Dr.Nalli.R.Uvaraj, Secretary, TNOA also participated in the programme anddelivered a lecture. There was a wide range of interesting topics in Paediatric Orthopaedics which waswell received by the delegates..The faculty included eminent speakers like Dr.Ashok.N.Johari, Mumbai,Prof.R.H.Govardhan,Chennai, Dr.S.Rajasekaran, Coimbatore, Prof.A.Rajamani,MaduraiDr.C.Sugavanam, Salem, Prof.Jagdish Menon, Puducherry, Prof.R.Rathina Sabapathy,Thanjavur and Dr.K.Vinodh, Coimbatore.Younger speakers like Dr.S.Kumaravel, Thanjavur,Dr.V.Sachidanandam, Erode, and Dr.S.Muthiraman, Tenkasi also formed part of the faculty. Around150 delegates participated in the delebrations.
