COLLEGE OVERVIEW (continued)

MCC offers the best of both worlds, with two distinct campuses, located in Bedford and Lowell. Our students can experience the vitality of urban life on the Lowell campus, which is located in the historic downtown area. In contrast, MCC’s 200-acre Bedford campus has the look and feel of a small, traditional New England college. Each campus offers our most popular programs of study, and students can take classes on one, or both, campuses. (A convenient shuttle van runs between the two.)

The Lowell campus, situated alongside the historic Concord River, includes the main six-story City Building, with classrooms, offices and the cafeteria. The renovated historic Federal Building, located directly across Kearney Square, houses the Lowell Campus Library, as well as additional classrooms, and conference areas.

Lowell is also the home of MCC’s Health, Science & Technology Center, located on nearby Middle Street. It includes the Middlesex Dental Hygiene Clinic, classrooms, laboratories and the Nursing Learning Center. The Pollard Building, also located on Middle Street, is owned by the Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School, which occupies the first two floors. MCC leases floors three and four for classroom and office space. The college recently acquired the historic Boston & Maine Railroad Depot Building, nearby in downtown Lowell, which is in the process of being renovated to house an academic arts center. Another Lowell academic building has also been approved by the Commonwealth, and a study will be underway in the near future.

The Bedford campus incorporates 11 buildings that house classrooms, laboratories, offices, the Bedford Campus Library, a Medical Education Imaging Center and a concert hall. A bookstore, cafeteria, student lounge, Fitness Center and Center for Health & Wellness are located in the Bedford Campus Center. Plans are underway to construct a new science and biotechnology building on the Bedford campus.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

For nearly two decades, Middlesex Community College has educated and trained thousands of employees in hundreds of businesses, industries and municipalities throughout Middlesex County.

Middlesex is proud of the vital relationships and alliances that have been built, and is continuously expanding the scope of education and training programs to meet the ever-changing needs for workplace education. The college is dedicated to advancing the economic growth and vitality of area businesses through workforce development and training activities tailored to the unique needs of each organization. Middlesex also manages two area One Stop Career Centers, serving regional residents seeking career guidance or assistance with employment:

The Career Place – Since 1997, Middlesex Community College has managed The Career Place, a One Stop Career Center in nearby Woburn that provides area residents with career planning, career development, and job search skills; helps them acquire marketable skills through referral to education and training programs; connects jobseekers with employers; and assists them as they advance in their careers. The Career Place also works with companies to help solve their workforce needs and maintain their competitive edge in our regional economy. MIDDLESEX COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION

The Middlesex Community College Foundation was created in 1988 as a 501 c (3) organization to enlist private sector support “in furtherance of the educational and charitable purposes of Middlesex Community College.” It is the vehicle for fundraising from individuals, corporations, small businesses and private foundations.

The MCC Foundation was created to ensure the college maintains its position as a recognized educational leader, as well as an innovative community partner, a provider of creative international initiatives, and an agent for regional economic growth and workforce development.

Since 1988, the MCC Foundation has generated income through revenue from investments managed by the Foundation Board of Directors, the proceeds of the college’s annual Celebrity Forum, Annual Fund, and other programs, campaigns, and events such as a 5K trail race, bike rides, and Trivia Nights.

OTHER NOTABLE FEATURES THAT MAKE MIDDLESEX UNIQUE

Historic Properties

Middlesex Community College has a commitment to preserving our past and revitalizing the community. Through creative reuse of existing facilities – and timely intervention – the MCC Foundation has saved two properties of historic significance and turned them into college and community assets. Both are maintained by the Foundation and gift-leased back to Middlesex for college and community use.

The John Nesmith House – Purchased by the MCC Foundation in 1994, this stately Lowell mansion was built by one of the city’s early textile-mill owners. The 22-room, 1843 Greek Revival/Regency-style house was restored, redecorated and reopened to the public as a Designer Showhouse. MCC’s Nesmith House is now a popular site for community gatherings, receptions and college functions.

The Middlesex Meetinghouse – Built in the 1850s by one of the town’s founding families, this beautifully renovated farmhouse is located in the town of Billerica, adjacent to MCC’s Bedford campus. Purchased by the Foundation in 2003, the farmhouse was slated to be torn down and replaced with a parking lot. Aware of the MCC Foundation’s success with the Nesmith House, local residents and officials asked the college to help save the house. The white clapboard exterior of the Meetinghouse has been preserved, while the interior was completely updated. It has also become a popular college and community resource.

International Education Fellowships

MCC is committed to educating students about global issues and broadening student perspectives of the world community. Our students can take part in several International Education Fellowships, academic opportunities that enable them to visit a country and study its history and culture. Since 1992, Middlesex has offered student fellowships to China, Russia, Costa Rica, Spain, Ireland, Peru, and Belize.

OTHER NOTABLE FEATURES THAT MAKE MIDDLESEX UNIQUE (continued)

Service-Learning & Community Engagement

At Middlesex, Service-Learning is a credit-bearing educational experience allowing students to participate in an organized activity that meets identified community needs, and then reflect on their service. It is a unique collaboration between students, faculty, staff and community partners, which also connects the college with community priorities, and MCC students with career exploration. MCC also offers students a variety of non-credit Civic Engagement opportunities to serve the local community.

Highly engaged in community activities, Middlesex was selected by the Campus Compact as one of only 13 colleges in the nation to be studied as a model of exemplary practices of civic engagement. The commitment of our college to community service has resulted in hundreds of Middlesex students volunteering thousands of hours to local projects, carefully designed to help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications.

Campus Resource Officers

In partnerships with the city of Lowell and the town of Bedford, Middlesex has hired police officers from those municipalities to work as assigned officers to its campuses. The model, considered unique in the United States, helps provide uniformed police presences on our campuses, while integrating the officers into the learning environments of our administration, our classrooms, and our student events.

The Power of Partnerships

By sharing resources and expertise, and working hard to creatively finance projects and secure millions of dollars in necessary grant funding, Middlesex has been able to maintain important programs and begin essential new initiatives that would otherwise not be possible.

Local Partnerships -- Through the years, MCC has developed many dynamic partnerships, creating unique collaborations with neighboring school districts, colleges, and area businesses and organizations. These innovative collaborations, many of which are grant supported, have played a significant role in the growth of the college and the communities served.

The impressive list of MCC’s local partnerships includes the creation and management of an award-winning charter school for high school dropouts – Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School – as well as a successful alternative middle school for students with behavioral and emotional disabilities, the B.R.I.D.G.E. Program in Lowell.

International Partnerships -- Middlesex also is a recognized leader in global education, having developed partnerships with dozens of countries over the past 20+ years. Our international partnerships are designed to help faculty and students, as well as businesses here and abroad, adapt to the realities of a global economy. The college is active in assisting many other countries to modernize and upgrade their educational and economic infrastructures, and has established partnerships with national and international organizations to provide workforce development and technical assistance projects in many other countries. Notable international partnerships include:

The Power of Partnerships/ International Partnerships (continued)

The East-West Center and The Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP)• - Established by the U.S. Congress in 1960, the East-West Center serves as a resource for information and analysis on critical issues of common concern, bringing people together to exchange views, build expertise, and develop policy options. The ASDP network now includes more than 400 colleges in 49 states, with 20 schools designated as ASDP regional centers. Middlesex Community College, through the leadership of President Carole Cowan was the first ASDP Regional Center in 1991.

American University of Phnom Penh• - Middlesex has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to partner with Cambodia’s new American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP). The agreement is the only MOU in Cambodia that enables students to access U.S. colleges and universities through a “1+1+2 pathway.” Cambodian students attend AUPP for one year, and then transfer to MCC for a year to complete an associate degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences.

REGION

Middlesex Community College’s two campuses are located in Middlesex County. With a population of 1,537,215 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012), Middlesex is the most populous county in Massachusetts. Lowell, MCC’s top feeder community, is the most populous city or town in Middlesex County.

Middlesex County is made up of 54 cities and towns, but enrollment at MCC is not limited to Middlesex County. In Middlesex County, seven of the towns – Lowell, Waltham, Billerica, Woburn, Chelmsford, Dracut and Tewksbury – make the “Top 10” lists of feeder towns for Middlesex Community College.

THE BOARD AND DEPARTMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION

MCC is part of the Massachusetts public higher education system, which is comprised of 15 community colleges, nine state universities, and the five-campus University of Massachusetts System. A statewide Board of Higher Education (BHE) has broad oversight responsibility for all of public higher education and has a particular responsibility for the community colleges and state universities. There is a separate statewide board for the University of Massachusetts. The Department of Higher Education, headed by a Commissioner, is the executive arm of the Board of Higher Education. The Board participates in the appointment of college presidents and approves presidential appointments and compensation.

The BHE is responsible for establishing statewide goals for the community colleges and state universities. Currently these goals are embodied in the Vision Project, an initiative that aims toward national leadership in six key areas of educational work: (1) college participation; (2) college completion; (3) student learning; (4) workforce alignment; (5) closing achievement gaps; (6) educating citizens. The Board asks each college and university in the system to incorporate attention to these goals in its strategic plan and to participate in statewide efforts to achieve progress regarding them. Each year the BHE collects data tracking progress on these outcomes for each college, and shares these data with presidents and campus boards. The BHE has also launched a major initiative to achieve cost savings through heightened collaboration among the colleges and universities and asks the individual colleges to participate in these efforts.
