Dear Colleague,

I am delighted to be able to offer you all, school staff, governors and directors, this ‘Training and

Continuing Professional Development Prospectus’ for 2018-19.

As you may know, over the last year there has been significant restructuring of our Diocesan Education

team (current team shown below). We have been listening to school and academy leaders and are

responding to what you have told us you require as well as taking into account national developments in

education. We do value your feedback and use this to shape and improve our service.

We can offer genuine expertise in a number of areas including Christian distinctiveness, school vision, RE

teaching and leadership, Collective Worship, SIAMS preparations, British values, parishes and schools

working together, admissions, governance and clerking. It is increasingly important that school, academy

and governance personnel are outwards looking in what is an ever evolving educational environment.

Through our own collaborative work with schools/academies, Teaching Schools, Local Authorities, MATs

and Higher Education Institutions, we aim to help you to enhance the knowledge and skills of your teams,

keep up to date with developments and share best practice so that together we can serve our

communities effectively.

Thinking Governance Module Programme developed by the Education Office

of the Church of England to contribute to better governance by enabling boards to consider their school strategy. 4 separate module available at £165 / £195 each. As part of the Service Level Agreement, governing bodies/boards of directors will be entitled to Module One of the Thinking Governance programme. Module 1 is about creating an opportunity for the whole governing body to look at ‘the bigger picture’ and vision for every part of the school and is designed to be a foundation for further strategic thinking.

Intended Outcomes: • To enable the review and update of a school admissions policy. • To ensure that the school’s admissions policy meets current statutory regulations.

Sessions are aimed at schools with their own admissions policy such as VA and academies. The session leaders will use their experience and expertise to help reduce time spent on considering your school’s draft admission policy and supplementary information form, in light of the current School Admission Code, and in preparing for consultation.

Governor Strategic Planning & Visits

Facilitator: Karen Powell Dates: Wed 19th September 2018 The Old Deanery, Exeter Time: 16:00 – 19:30 Cost: Standard charge

One of the three main roles of governors is to ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction. Ofsted will wish to see how the governing body works effectively with leaders to communicate their strategic direction for the school and develop a culture of ambition. During this session we will explore what makes a good strategic plan. We will look at who writes it, how the content is obtained, how the governors’ vision is best communicated and how the School Development Plan sets out how the vision will be delivered.

We will then explore how we must ensure that our school improvement plan is being delivered in a timely manner. Governors making visits to school is a crucial part of knowing our school well and helps us to monitor and evaluate the outcomes of teaching and learning. However, do we always know what we should be looking at and what to record on the visit form?

This course will give hints and tips on making the visit process enjoyable for governors and staff teams, explains how we can maximise the value of visits and demonstrates how important it is for governors to learn from what they see on visits and further develop their knowledge.

CEO Network for MATs Containing Church Schools By Invitation

The Diocesan MAT Leadership Forum meets termly to build our collective capacity to improve and serve our learners and families more effectively. Our autumn term meeting will be at Trinity CofE VA Primary school. Every MAT that contains a church school is encouraged to attend so that collectively we can:

create a strong and flourishing CofE MAT network through identifying and sharing best practise;

exercise our moral responsibility (and indeed our Christian duty) to collectively work in the best interests of all learners and their families as they experience education for wisdom, hope, community and dignity and discover life in all its fullness;

strengthen every MAT that includes CofE schools through peer support and challenge;

advise the Diocese of Exeter on matters relating to system leadership.

A brief introduction to the Admissions Code will be held from 15:00 – 16:00 for those who wish to attend.

Safer Recruitment Accredited Course (for staff, governors and directors)

Facilitator: Karen Powell Dates: Course 1: Thurs 11th Oct (1 of 2), 16:30 – 19:00 and Thurs 18th Oct (2 of 2), 16:30 – 19:00.

Location: The Old Deanery, Exeter Cost: £90 per delegate for complete course, including exam fee and certification

Course description: Organisations and individuals working with children and young people, or who are involved in providing services for them, have a duty to safeguard and promote their welfare. There is an emphasis on and need for school staff and governors to have up-to-date knowledge on safeguarding, starting from recruitment. Every interview panel must have a member on it who is Safer Recruitment trained.

The style of the training is interactive and there will be table discussions regularly throughout the sessions. The subject will at times be difficult; but there will also be some lighter moments too! By the end of the course delegates will:

Understand levels of abuse and offender profiles

Be able to identify key features of staff recruitment that helps deter, or prevent, the appointment of unsuitable people

Have considered policies and practices to minimise opportunities for abuse or ensure it is reported promptly

Be able to recognise the importance of maintaining an on-going culture of vigilance

At the end of each of the 4 modules there are 3 - 4 exam questions. Delegates will be able to discuss the questions with colleagues before committing answers to the paper.

This is an accredited course by the Safer Recruitment Consortium: The NSPCC, The Lucy Faithful Foundation, NASS and CAPE. Delegates will achieve certification, which lasts for 3 years.

New School Leaders Induction Day – By Invitation

The day will give you specific information relating to church school leadership, such as Christian Distinctiveness, SIAMS, governance and buildings; an insight into the benefits of working closely with Diocese of Exeter; and the opportunity to meet key personnel and build professional networks. To help you to be successful as you take up your new appointment, there is an expectation that you to attend. The Diocese of Exeter places a very high value on its senior leaders and the quality of the relationships that exist between us and our schools and academies.

Lifesavers Financial Education Programme

Facilitator: Lifesavers’ trainer Trinity School, Exeter Date: Thursday 8th November 2018 Time: 09:30 – 12:30 Cost: No Charge

LifeSavers is a financial education programme for primary schools, giving children the knowledge, skills and attitudes to manage money well. Habits around money are being formed by the age of 7 and just 5% of parents think that their children leave school with the skills needed to manage money well. LifeSavers equips teachers to teach financial education, supports schools to set up savings clubs and provides resources to engage parents and families. It is a values based programme.

This training day will give an essential introduction to all those who are new to working in a Church of England school, exploring the Church of England’s Vision for Education and the question, ‘what is distinctive about Church of England schools?’ There will be a focus on educating for Wisdom, Hope, Dignity and Community and on meeting the needs of all learners (academic and wider) in a Christian school. This will include reference to Growth Mindsets, dialogic teaching, Assessment for Learning, Character Education and Christian distinctiveness. We will also look at the value and significance of high quality collective worship and religious education.

A new SIAMS framework comes into force in September 2018 which draws heavily on the Church of England Vision for Education. This course will brief school leaders on the significant changes to the Evaluation Schedule and Self-evaluation and offers ideas for further improvement. It is aimed for all staff and governors and will be an, informative and enjoyable day.

The intended outcomes are to: Introduction to the new SIAMS Framework Strategies for effective self-evaluation What research evidence tells us? Case studies of best practice

Please bring a copy of your school’s most recent SIAMS self-evaluation form and action plan with you as you may want to annotate these through the day. Please note, the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) is a significant way in which Church schools are judged.

Teaching Hinduism & Buddhism in the Primary School

It will offer practical ways of learning about and from Hinduism & Buddhism, providing essential subject knowledge and active approaches to learning. Resources and ideas will be shared so offering engaging strategies and creative, enquiry-based materials suitable for children from 5-11 years old. The course will equip teachers to:

You will be given advice and practical guidance about how to utilize the extensive set of course materials provided as part of the resource pack.

A governing body's best piece of evidence of effectiveness is definitely the minutes. In this course we will show you how your minutes can be set out to enable inspectors to easily see the challenge governors make. We will also look at best practice examples and give plenty of tips to demonstrate how a certain style of minutes can not only provide the best evidence but also make the clerk's role easier too.

This course is mainly designed for clerks, but chairs are most welcome to come along as the best minutes are a partnership between a clerk and chair.

It is a requirement that all newly appointed Foundation Governors and Directors attend an induction session within 12 months of their appointment. The course is also extremely useful as a refresher for long standing Governors in their 3rd term or more. The course is open to all categories of Governors and Directors of church schools and academies.

The course will help governors to: • Understand the different categories of schools and the responsibilities of governors in these categories • Have an overall understanding of Church school governance including the role of the governor in new staff

appointments, buildings and admissions • Have an understanding of RE, collective worship and SIAMS • Network with other church school governors and share good practice

Chairing Skills – Increasing understanding of the role

Being a chair of governors is a key leadership role as governing bodies are central to the effectiveness and accountability of our schools. To be effective, you need a good understanding of the role and its responsibilities so that your school gains maximum benefit from the work that you do.

An effective chair of governors: • works with the headteacher to promote and maintain high standards of educational achievement • ensures that the governing body sets a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school • with the governing body, holds the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and for the performance management of staff

During this course, for current chairs or prospective chairs (vice chairs) we will explore the role and determine the skills a good chair should have. We will review how effectiveness can be increased by good use of delegation and we will explore the relationship with the Headteacher and clerk to governors. The course will outline the other roles of the chair in monitoring, accountability, managing complaints and difficult incidents and we will conclude with a question and answer session.

RE Subject Leaders Annual Conference (An interactive day, with workshops, for Primary RE coordinators)

The day will focus on planning and delivery of exciting and challenging learning in RE, emphasising an enquiry-based approach. We aim for all attending to gain some new ideas about how to lead learning in RE and how to inspire young people with rich experiences both within and beyond the classroom.

Safeguarding for Governors

This course is designed to help governors deliver their role of safeguarding children and young people. It is interactive and covers the scale of the problems our young people face growing up in today’s world. We will examine the legal context, the important questions governors need to ask and Ofsted’s expectations of schools and colleges relating to safeguarding. We will take time to also review the specific role of the safeguarding governors. Whilst many governors hold a link role this must be one of the most complex. Delegates will examine the contents of key safeguarding documents - Keeping Children Safe in Education and Working together to safeguard children - and discuss how we can grow a culture in school where safeguarding is always kept high on the agenda.

The course will also enhance governors’ knowledge of Serious Case Reviews, Local Safeguarding Children Boards, the scale of the problem and stress the responsibility we all have in keeping our children safe. Delegates will receive a safeguarding handbook of materials to support the course and to help them as they carry out their responsibilities to safeguard children.

A governing body's best piece of evidence of effectiveness is definitely the minutes. In this course we will show you how your minutes can be set out to enable inspectors to easily see the challenge governors make. We will also look at best practice examples and give plenty of tips to demonstrate how a certain style of minutes can not only provide the best evidence but also make the clerk's role easier too.

This course is mainly designed for clerks, but chairs are most welcome to come along as the best minutes are a partnership between a clerk and chair.

Governor Strategic Planning & Visits

One of the three main roles of governors is to ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction. Ofsted will wish to see how the governing body works effectively with leaders to communicate their strategic direction for the school and develop a culture of ambition. During this session we will explore what makes a good strategic plan. We will look at who writes it, how the content is obtained, how the governors’ vision is best communicated and how the School Development Plan sets out how the vision will be delivered.

We will then explore how we must ensure that our school improvement plan is being delivered in a timely manner. Governors making visits to school is a crucial part of knowing our school well and helps us to monitor and evaluate the outcomes of teaching and learning. However, do we always know what we should be looking at and what to record on the visit form?

This course will give hints and tips on making the visit process enjoyable for governors and staff teams, explains how we can maximise the value of visits and demonstrates how important it is for governors to learn from what they see on visits and further develop their knowledge.

Philosophy for Children (P4C) in primary school

Philosophy for children is a powerful educational approach that has been found to be highly effective in the dual aims of raising attainment and improving children’s enjoyment of learning. In this practical, hands-on course we will be exploring some of the central aims and methods of P4C and discussing how its techniques can be embedded into learning settings across the curriculum. This course will equip teachers to:

• help children to ask philosophical questions

• develop an enquiry-based approach to learning

• create a ‘community of enquiry’

• utilise P4C resources and integrate P4C skills into the curriculum

Spirituality and Spiritual Development

support school leaders and governors to make the connection between the Vision for Education and day to day

decision making. This Governance Day will explore a selection of the Governance Leadership issues in greater depth

and get governors talking and exchanging ideas about how their vision for education can be brought to life in the

everyday interaction with the school.

CANCELLATIONS: While we understand that delegates sometimes have to withdraw at a late stage,

We regret that when such late cancellations occur, it may be necessary to make an administration charge

and recoup any costs incurred as part of a cancellation fee (this will depend on the nature of the course

and the costs incurred). A cancellation fee of 100% will be made if cancelling within one week of an event,

subject to the terms and conditions of the venue.

Most courses will have a minimum number of participants required to make the course viable,

therefore bookings will close 7 days prior in order for a weeks notice to be given in the event of

cancellation.

REFRESHMENTS: The Course fees include refreshments on arrival and at any breaks. Where stated,

lunch will be provided, usually as a sandwich buffet selection.
