Friday 10th January

Steers to £1300 Heifers to £1180

Store cattle looked exceptionally dear on Friday regardless of breed age or type and topped at an impressive £1300 for a

tremendous red Limousin steer (25m) from Chris Chudley of Torbryan, Chris also topped the heifer section with another

cracking red Limousin of a similar age selling at a decent £1190. Slightly younger red Limousin bullocks (21m) ran to £1110

for Gerald Vallance of Ashburton whilst Simmental steers of that age saw £1200 for Barry Mildon & family of Cadbury and

£1175 for Brightley Farms of Umberleigh. David Mingo, Fenny Bridges brought some eye catching Charolais steers and

saw his best (30m) ease to £1190 followed by a later born pair (21m) which drew £1140 apiece, other Charolais bred

steers of note included a single (19m) from Stuart Griffin, Ashwater which drew £1140. Native breed bullocks saw well

bred and fed Aberdeen Angus steers (21m) from Alan Eustace, Exbourne reach £1090 with others to £1045 and £1040

for Andrew Banbury of Crediton and John Cole & Son of Ivybridge respectively. Further native breed steers saw several

well bred South Devon’s top at £1085 for a trio (20m) from Dave & Karen Smith of Totnes with younger (15m) sorts off

the same farm to £1050 and others (23m) close at £1080 for Andrew Banbury and £1075 for Gerald Vallance. British Blue

steers (20m) from Brightley Farms drew £1060 with more of the same close at £1050 for EK Guscott of Drewsteignton.

An eye catching run of mainly Blue cross Limousin yearling

steers from Paul Giddy up from Torpoint sold well and to £845

and £820. Top priced heifer already reported, but other

Limousin’s (22m) worth a mention sold readily to £1020 for

Gerald Vallance whilst yearlings of that breed looked good

money at £920 for DA & AP Gillbard of Cruwys Morchard. A

pen of smart Aberdeen Angus heifers (24m) saw £990 a head

for Robert & Christine Harris of Bickleigh with British Blue

females not far behind at £970 (25m) for Messrs Hawkins of

Thorverton and £950 (£21m) for Eddy Yeandle of Cheriton

Fitzpaine. A fine pair of South Devon heifers (22m) fetched £880 apiece for Dave & Karen Smith.

A neat show of stirks and suckled calves met another buoyant trade throughout with plenty of buyers around the ring

securing good prices for the small number forward. Angus steers topped at £645 for Alan Eustace of Exbourne (9m),

Campbell Hill of Horningtops presented Blue steers which achieved £640 (13m) whilst Trevor Chugg down from

throughout! Top of the day was £1900 for a smart British Friesian Heifer from Phillip Clarke of Aylesbeare who sold

another at £1650. GCB Davis of Tiverton sold a decent run of Heifers to £1600, £1520 & £1500 with Heifer Calves for

Twenty seven orphan lambs sold to £25 (x3) for Tom Yandle of Mamhead who had another four at £22 and that price

was matched by Tracey Pike of Luppitt with a young Suffolk cross lamb. Another 5 lambs from different vendors made £20, some big, some small and nothing less than £12 and the overall average was similar at £18.89.

Just over 1500 store hoggs were a very fiery trade, especially for short keep sorts and the bottom end, of which there

were many. Best ram lambs being strong and well bred to £107 for Stuart Williams of Sidmouth, pens of forward sorts

from David Dunster of Dartington sold to £93.50, £92 & £91.50, first time vendor BH Lane of Combe Raleigh sold smart

pens at £93 & £90.50, £93 also for Charlie Gordon of Silverton and another 15 pens between £90 & £92.50! Medium

hoggs all £80 and some small longer term hoggs up towards £80 looking very well sold. Others £64 to £75 and the very small or funnily bred generally all over £50 and the overall average was £74.99!

A large entry of 132 grazers sold in front of an increased audience of buyers to £90 for a Dorset from Brian Westcott of

Exford, similar to £89 for Maydown Farm of Bridport and £88 for both Ian Rowe of Whiddon Down and AM Bond of

South Milton. Mules to £78.50 for David & Linda Pellow of Soyrton and majority of other genuine grazers were £50 to £73.

The catalogued sale of In-Lambers were met with a decent level of demand and all but one pen found a new home. The

highlight was a double pen of much admired Cheviot Mule shearlings from Julie & Ed Williams of Ilsington that received

frenzied bidding to make £178 a piece. Next best then to Rosie Fishleigh of Sourton with Dorsets scanned with doubles

at £140 (x2) and the singles at £133 whilst Messrs Randall & Mitchell of Chideock sold Mule shearlings to £139 and Barry

Nicholls of Parracombe had 4T BFL ewes at £135. Plenty of other crossbred ewes of varying ages selling from £115 to

£128 and older Mule ewes to £118 (x4) for Steve Huxter and family of Bridport. All ewes in keen demand and an overall average of £111 was achieved.

Seventy six ewes with 124 Lambs were seriously dear from start to finish with better quality and a superb trade to match.

Suffolk cross FM ewes with shapely twins to £250 for Darryl & Sarah Cheacker of Bristol closely followed by daughter

Laura Rea of Gloucester with similar at £235 and Chris Popham of Trull had Suffolk crosses with younger lambs at £224.

The first lot sold made £224 being 8 ewes with 11 lambs (£94.32/life) from Maydown Farms of Bridport and further Dorset

doubles at £220 & £210 for Derek Cole of Bradninch and £210 (x2) for Anthony Tucker of Kingsnympton. Singles not the

same quality as the doubles but Derek Cole’s full mouth Dorset singles snuck to £150 and another made £144. Some

lesser sorts down at £30 to £55 per life looking chancy but averages were lifted significantly by the general quality with outfits levelling at £188 (up £42!) and per life at £71.63 (up £8).

It is with regret we have to announce the passing of John Rounsevell affectionately known in farming and market circles as “JR” who passed away in his sleep on the 8th January 2020. A retired farmer and following a chance meeting with the late Alan Venner, he was invited to help in the sheep section and became a valuable member of staff for many years until foot and mouth closed the market in 2001.

The funeral service is on 24th January 2020 at 2pm at St Mary’s Church, Payhembury followed by interment.

A huge entry of sows for our first sale of the 2020 saw the best heavyweights to £180 on behalf of Chris Down of Budleigh

with others from the same good home at £170 (x2) & £150 (x2). Messrs Foxworthy Estates saw their good sow hit at

£178 with an outstanding run of 210 kg sows sell at £150 (x4) a price matched by the best of six from Andrew Freemantle

of Clyst St Mary. The top 15 cull sows today sold to an average of £171.20 with four buyers present.

Top cull of the day was £138 given for the best heavyweights from Messrs Knox & Son of Whiddon Down. Other heavies

came in from Richard & Rob Overnell of Torrington at £135 whilst a superb pen of quality finished pigs (109 kg) flew to

£131 (x4) on behalf of Rob Smith of Launceston going off to their new owners in Dorset. Messrs Bridgman came up from

Saltash with six smart finished pigs (101 kg) and reached £130 with the best of the medium weights (96 kgs) from Richard

and Vicky Gibbins topping at £126 going off to Bristol. 87kg White pigs from loyal supporter Messrs Serpell of Plymton

hit £125, with the first pen of 96 kg white pigs from Weavers Meadow Pig Unit from Budleigh Salterton hitting £122 and

Phillip Dyer of Tipton Cross close up at £120. Seven buyers keenly contesting finished pigs today included three local

butchers who were looking to pay good money for the right animal.

Speaking after the sale James Morrish of Kivells said “ A great day to start the year with a 19% increase compared to the

same sale in 2019. We are very fortunate to have both loyal buyers and sellers at Exeter on the pigs and my thanks go to
