approach, the contributors use archaeological, architectural, artistic, historical, economic and
pictorial evidence, along with the results of new research, to present an illuminating and
fascinating account of glassmaking in Ireland that is accessible to the academic and general
reader alike. Among the many topics covered are the origins of Waterford glass and its re-
emergence in the 20th.

Contemporary Glass Society (C.G.S.) are pleased to announce a call out to UK glass artists
for an upcoming exhibition „Living With Glass‟. The exhibition will be an exciting showcase
of bespoke glass in collaboration with the internationally renowned Vessel Gallery; a leading

contemporary UK glass artists, based upon the use of glass within interiors and architecture.
The intention is to raise the profile, both nationally and internationally, of contemporary glass

*Deadline 28/02/11. „Warm Glass UK Glass Prize 2011‟ Launch: Glass Artists throughout
the country have the chance to win top prizes once again by producing work on the theme of
“the environment” for the prestigious Warm Glass UK Glass Prize 2011. Artists, students and
newcomers to glass fusing can demonstrate their creative skills in the competition; run each
year by the country‟s leading art glass supplier, Warm Glass UK which is based near Bristol.
“The theme of the environment for 2011 is extremely topical and close to our hearts,” said
Warm Glass Director Pippa Bluck. “In 2010 we received 191 entries from artists of all
abilities and we are really keen to encourage entries once again across all three categories.”
The environmental theme must be incorporated into their piece and all entries must include
an element of kiln-formed glass work. The first Warm Glass UK prize was launched in 2005
at the Contemporary Glass Society A.G.M. in London and has grown each year. There are
now three categories – one for artists, one for students and one for newcomers, which in 2011
will be called the Popular Prize. Previous winners include Mikyoung Jung from Korea
(www.mikyoungjung.com). She won the prize in 2008 and flew to the UK in February 2009
for her prize, a masterclass with Argentinian artist, Silvia Levensen. The masterclass led to
the formation of the “Silicon Girls” who held a highly successful exhibition in August 2010
as part of the festival of glass. The 2010 winner Alison Lowry (www.alisonlowry.co.uk) from
Northern Ireland attended a masterclass at Warm Glass UK in May and so impressed
everyone that she has been invited to teach a masterclass next year in March. Entries for the
2011 competition must be received by February 28th.
, 2011. The public will then have a
chance to vote up until March 18th.
for their favourite piece which will receive the Popular
Prize. Prizes are: Artist‟s Prize: a place on the Masterclass with Bob Leatherbarrow in May at
Warm Glass UK‟s Resource Centre, Student‟s Prize: a quantity of Bullseye Glass and
Popular Prize: a Paragon SC2 kiln. On this year‟s theme Pippa Bluck of Warm Glass UK
said: “The environment is fundamentally connected to all we need as human beings to
survive. “Everything we do here has an eye on the environmental impact from recycling a
huge quantity of materials to create packaging, to avoiding air shipments to import products
whenever possible.” For more information see: Website: www.warmglassprize.co.uk . Issued
by Empica on behalf of Warm Glass UK. For further information contact Judith Skorupski on

*Entry Deadline 01/04/11: Announcing Work Placement Awards from The Worshipful
Company Of Glaziers & Painters Of Glass 2011-12. The Worshipful Company Of Glaziers &
Painters Of Glass is pleased to announce that once again they will offer an „Award For
Excellence‟ and two „Ashton Hill Awards‟ for the year 2011-12. These are work placement
Awards. The deadline for entry is 1st.
April, interviewing 12th.
April, 2011. Application details
available below and on the Glaziers‟ Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com . The aim of all
the Glaziers‟ Company‟s Awards is to raise standards of work within the craft, particularly in
the U.K., by offering additional learning experiences to enhance the skills of potential
workers. Applications are invited from individuals within the first five years of their training
who are intending to undertake a long term career in stained glass, preferably within the U.K.
Recently I made a concentrated effort to contact each of our past Award winners. As a result I
can report that of the 14 who have completed „Awards For Excellence‟, 9 of them are
working in glass today, 2 are actively seeking work in glass and one other with whom I could
not make contact is believed to be working in glass. Of the 20 who have completed the
shorter „Ashton Hill Awards‟, 14 are working in glass, one is seeking to return to doing so
after health problems and another is completing her degree studies. This is a very positive set
of outcomes which demonstrates the contribution which these awards are making to

NEWS.
*In a recent email from Ruth Richards-Hill she writes the following:
My partner and I have opened a new glass place in Glasgow. Ballito Bay exhibits and sells,
mostly for new Artists that struggle to obtain exposure elsewhere. But we‟re a whole lot
more! We have a small resource library and also offer Free wi-Fi with comfy sofas to sit and
relax. We have a great coffee corner. We‟re child and Toddler friendly and….. we offer taster
courses for absolute beginners. We have discovered that there are lots of courses out there
especially for those that have been hobbyists or are looking to make an income from glass,
but there are those that don‟t even know what to do with a cutter. We‟re about introducing
people to the medium, before moving them onto our fellow craftsmen and excellent educators,
to hone their skills. We are offering quick tasters from as little as £25.00, covering everything
from stained glass, to jewellery making and kilnwork. Artists wanting to exhibit are welcome
to approach us, and we are happy to develop into a meeting place for likeminded glass
craftsmen. We open officially on Thursday 20t.h
January 2011. Our address is: Ballito Bay.
83 Saltmarket, Glasgow. Glasgow City. G1 5LE. Currently we can be contacted on Mob:
07894 448 976. We are on the perimeter of the Merchant city, directly down the road from
the Cathedral and Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Just past the bridge, and a block away from the
high court (round the corner from the district courts). People can park in the NCP car Park
behind St Enochs on King Street, or find Street parking in St Andrews square. Cost of up to 2
hours street Parking is reimbursed to customers who spend £10.00 or more, tea and coffee

*British Contemporary Crafts: New Contemporary Glass Event Proposed!
Meg Fisher of British Contemporary Crafts writes: Dear Glass Artists, At the end of
November this year I am looking into putting on a specialist selling exhibition of
contemporary glass in west London. I would be very interested to hear your views, ideas and
whether this would be of interest to you as an exhibitor. For those of you who do not know me
a little background: I‟ve been running British Contemporary Crafts for just over 10 years
and have, over the years, produced a mail order catalogue which evolved into the website: –
www.britishcrafts.co.uk – and run a series of mixed discipline events in London and Bristol. I
also organise two craft shows a year for the Landmark Arts Centre – Website:
www.landmarkartscentre.org – an arts based charity in west London. And I did work for the
Sussex Guild for a year. If you have a few minutes to drop me a line with your thoughts I
would be very grateful – before the end of January if possible. Thanks & kind regards, Meg

Press Release: Ruskin Glass Centre. New Centre of Craft and Creativity in the Historic
Stourbridge Glass Quarter. After a busy year of building work; the newly refurbished Ruskin
Glass Centre is throwing open its doors and readying itself for a busy festive season.
Following a £1.4m refurbishment, made possible thanks to funding from Advantage West
Midlands, the site that once was home to the glass trade greats of Royal Doulton and Webb
Corbett is continuing to help glassmakers thrive in Stourbridge. The extensive works has
resulted in 15 workshops, all home to independent businesses housing a range of glass
craftspeople as well as other complementary businesses. Manager Leigh White said; „We are
thrilled with what has been achieved on what was once a rather neglected site and are proud
of the quality of artists and businesses that we are now home to‟. Ruskin Glass Centre is
home to a wide array of glass crafts; from live glassblowing, respected studio glass artists,
engravers, glass decorators, and glass repair specialists to the diverse yet complementary
trades of furniture design, handmade soap, textiles, photography, printing and publishing.
There is also a brand new 30 cover cafe on site serving high quality fresh organic snacks,
meals and desserts under the watchful eye of newly appointed Catering Manager Chris
Williams. On asking how he felt about the coming weeks Chris said; “It‟s an extremely
exciting opportunity to open the Cafe providing the local area and beyond with the finest
offerings, using locally sourced organic produce; most of which is being sourced as close as
Kinver, at the farm operated by Ruskin Mill Education Trust, the operating organisation of
Ruskin Glass Centre”. He also said, “I am looking forward to using the Cafe for a number of
events such as cookery school days, gourmet nights and cookery classes”. With future plans
including hosting master classes and short breaks in partnership with the onsite experts
there‟s a bright future ahead for the newest addition to the West Midland‟s tourism industry.
With a jam-packed few months ahead the Centre will play host to everything from opera
performances to Christmas parties, the home of the Black Country‟s „Choir Idol‟ competition,
which will see the best school choirs from across the Black Country to the Ruskin Rascals
Kids Club putting the new Centre‟s versatility to the ultimate test. Recently moving to 7 day
opening customers will be able to enjoy the delights of both onsite and external craftspeople,
with great Christmas gifts on sale as well as workshops and demonstrations occurring on
Saturdays and Sundays throughout December. For further information and photo calls please
