Bogotá is a very friendly city to move around. You will find the following options:

Transmilenio a mass transit system with its own carriageways, which came into service in 2001. it uses two or three module “bendy-buses”. This system is an example, not only for the improvement of the traffic system, but also to help control climate change. This model has been adopted by 12 other cities around the world.

A bike friendly citySince 1998, Bogotá, Colombia has built more than 340 kilometers of protected bikeways. More than 90,000 people a day, use this very high quality bicycle infrastructure.

On Sundays, between 7:00 to 14:00 some of the avenues become recreational bikeride streets. Skaters, athletes or simple walkers also use them. These ride bike streets are not only a model in South America, they have also become the most important focus of recreation and sporting amusement where more than a million people use them every weekend.

Safety: perception vs reality

For many years Bogota and Colombia have had a misperception of security very far from their reality. Even if the dramatic security situation back in the 80’s and 90’s cannot be denied, nowadays Colombia faces a completely di-fferent reality as a consequence of the different changes implemented from 2001. An evolution of 16 years allows us to affirm that we are a safe coun-try, but this is not something that we say, but there is solid data showing that the only risk of coming to Bogota is wanting to stay.

5 facts about safety in Bogotá – Colombia:

1. Foreign investment has experienced constant growth. The city has received over 14 billion dollars of investment in the last 10 years and more than 1,600 multinational companies have found in Bogota an ideal place for bu-siness. This is a demonstration that large companies trust in Bogota to bring their executives and business projects.

2. Remarkable personalities have also come to the city. From big music superstars, up to Nobel Prize winners, and renewed businessmen, among others, have visited Bogota in the last years.Angela Merkel, Richard Branson, Muhamad Yunus, Koffi Annan, Sir Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Cindy Crawford, Katy Perry, Mark Zuckerberg, Mi-chael Porter, just to mention a few.

32 33

3. World class events have chosen Bogota to be their venue. Among them, the World Sum-mit of Local and Regional Leaders, gathering more than 3,000 mayors and governors from all over the world will come to Bogota in Oc-tober 2016, the World Summit of Peace Nobel Prize Winners – 20 Peace Nobel Prize winners will visit Colombia during the first quarter of 2017, and the One Young World Summit that will gather young leaders from over 190 coun-tries along with influential businessmen, acti-vists and Nobel Prize winners in October 2017.

The city has a Sub Secretariat for Coexistence and Citizen Security, in charge of the Center for Command, Control, Communications and Calculations of Bogota C4. This center is known for a relevant techno-logy investment, with the installation of 4,000 new video surveillance cameras, and the implementation of an application that allows citizens to report and denounce crimes on line.

4. The media has highlighted positive change in our country. The Times magazine in their edition of April 2012 makes an emphasis about this in their cover with the headline “The Co-lombian Comeback” “From nearly a failed sta-te to an emerging global player – in less than a decade” and in August 26, 2016 the New York Times published “Colombia’s Milestone in World Peace”: The Peace treaty announced marks more than the end of the war. One has only to look back a few decades to see how momentous a change this is”.
